Portable Host for VSTi?

Hi, I am wondering if there's any "portable" host for virtual instruments, something tha you could put on a USB pen along with some VST dlls, simply plug it in and use it to play on ANY PC, without installing anything, independent on audio drivers, other software installed.

I was checking MiniHost on a new windows7 install, but it asks for ASIO drivers which are not present. I could install ASIO4ALL but I want something able to play on ANYthing...

Any suggestion?

thanks. I forgot to add...posibly for free. (i would just need something for playing/testing a single synth)

(cheap) Energy XT2 (v1 requires ASIO, v2 has DS support), probably Reaper as mentioned.. (free) VSTlord, and check out the freeware hosts in the plug-in database for more.

I would suggest VST Host and Reaper. VST Host is great for your purpose (demoing synths) but it's good to have a proper sequencer there too for those inspirational moments.

Reaper is definately portable and although it's not "free" but can be tested for an unlimited period with no restrictions. When you install Reaper to your home PC it places a shortcut in the start menu to "install to usb key or removable media". This copies everything from your Reaper folder to your USB key making it fully portable.

Another vote here for SaviHost. It will do exactly what you want. It's free, and can load a single VST or VSTi. It can use all manner of audio drivers on windows including ASIO, and it can use a midi device too.

I keep SaviHost on usb devices and on my laptops for testing out new synths. It's also great to have on my audio machine for those times I just want to open an instrument and play.

IIRC MU.LAB doesn't need to be installed and you can launch it from an usb pen

I spent a while recently trying to sort out a basic portable studio for while I am away on business and found the following:

-Reaper is kind of portable but even the portable setup leaves files on the host computer
-MU.LAB is portable but needs ASIO
-EnergyXT1 is kind of portable but leaves an .ini file in the host windows directory and requires ASIO
-EnergyXT2 is fully portable and can use DS instead of ASIO

In the end I went with EnergyXT2 with a handful of VST and samples and it works all runs nicely on a USB stick. If the price is an issue maybe look for a cheap copy in the marketplace, I have bought a few bargains there recently

But FYI: The forthcoming MU.LAB 3 also supports MME so you can use it without ASIO.

MU.LAB 3 may be expected at the end of the year.
