Any comments, Liteon?
gotta love how you quote yourself

maybe it's your monitors, not your ears........or maybe you need to spend some time learning how to create space in your mix to allow the more subtler aspects of the instruments to shine through

Pro and semi-pro producers and musicians that are looking to take their bass work to a higher level.
Are any of you planning on writing a song that consists of nothing but one bass instrument playing throughout? If not, you are not going to HEAR the subtleties that some of Trilian's presets offer, and it's a waste of time.
Then you likely don't believe that there's any difference between a simple bass sample and a live bass player.

Most producers recognize that there is indeed a large difference in a track between a super simple sampled bass and what a real bassist can do. The differences are primarily in the subtleties and the dynamics.

That's what an instrument like Trilian is trying to address for electronic producers....narrowing that gap and providing more options that were previously unavailable in a single source.

But more importantly, providing a very wide range of sounds. The reason it is so large is because it is BOTH highly detailed and has a very large variety and quantity of bass sounds.
I listened to one of Dr Wu's very nice sounding demos - the only problem being that the bass could have been produced by any number of much less PC intensive (both in RAM, hard drive use and CPU) synths... Because you simply can't hear the differences when the bass is in a mix.
What do you say Dr. Wu?

You have lots and lots of simpler bass samples in your library....right?

Could you have produced those tracks with the older sounds and have it sound the same?
notice how even Eric has to pause while listening to the three different types of sounds which the preset plays, near the start, one without vibrate, one with, the other with whatever it was (I've forgotten as I watched it a few hours ago) - NOBODY is going to be able to hear those differences in a mix.
Actually, it's pretty easy for anyone to hear the difference in a mix between a note played with vibrato and without vibrato.

Also, remember that a great deal of music that features Acoustic Bass is sparse....trios, duos, etc. So there are many examples of music where bass is highly exposed and these kinds of details are very much noticable.
Having 21,000 samples is not necessarily a good thing - despite the 'gasp' that somebody in the audience let out when Eric mentioned it.
Of course. You do know that you don't have to use all of them....right? :-)

It's quite easy to thin out the samples with the software to make them simpler if you prefer.

After all, it's a lot easier to take away detail than to add it. :-)

We also have Basses that only use a handful of samples too, that are super efficient and use almost no resources at all. You can actually compare the difference yourself in the same instrument. (like the Bass Legends sounds which were sampled 15 years ago. They still sound cool and are really efficient resource-wise....but they don't have anywhere close to the subtlety and expression of the new bass sounds recorded specifically for Trilian)

You get all types of approaches in Trilian....not just the massive approach.

Can't wait to received my copy, I know it's coming before end of week. I have another little question Eric, do you know when you plan to have Omni in 64bit, it's the only one missing now.

Thanx for all the great work!

Not long now.....ye shall see, ye shall see.... ;-)
Thanx for all the great work!
You are most welcome! :-)

What are you talking about, Christianmusicmaker? Anybody can shoot video of that quality using any HD camcorder on the market.
I will be sure to pass your critique along to the video crew we hired from HBO to shoot this for us. ;-)

I'm wondering though.....why all the negativity?

We are just trying to produce a good instrument here that will work in lots of different kinds of musical situations for a huge variety of musicians and producers. There's really no need for such angry attacks and the hating.

Cheers,

spectrum :-)

well, we're from the woods: hunters and collectors.

i'm quite satisfied with Omnisphere (almost one year now); Trillian has to wait for the big cash comes to town boogey ... i need a Chapman Stick especially.

cheers

30Gb for bass library, bass instrument and asking for 2gb of ram or more...

I've heard tracks which are made with less then 1mb of bass sample(sign of clever programing ??), still they sound way better then anything on that video. I could understand if this is all about recording orchestra or something but imho it's overrated marketing. They are "catching" customers with these overrated strategies which involve big numbers and so called "new" revolutionary sampling system. Just imho of course...Also pretty logical decision for company at this point of time. People tend to think that they have superb product if there are big numbers involved. Old story. Look at Camera(pixel) market :hihi:

Few years later they will release bass library 1TB big, with superb new technique of sampling - bass instrument recorded on fire in grand canyon! :?

I'm sure eric doesn't need me to step in on his behalf.. but really dude this IS about a good instrument that will work in lots of different kinds of situations and not only that but one many of us have been waiting for. Most of us want some information from those who have it about how it runs and how it sounds. Outside of that there are some here who are lucky enough to be receiving a killer upgrade price of free or $99 (neither of which is me unfortunately) with a protection scheme that isn't an irritant to the user. I cannot image what you are bitching about or why.

There is always a killjoy or two who distract from the threads like these but geezus go spend your money elsewhere and start a new thread about that.

Well, here's sonkeysankey singing. I think it might help explain.

Certainly not more detailed and subtle. That's just not possible with 1mb.

If you believe so, please post a link to that one megabyte acoustic bass that's blowing away Trilian's....I would LOVE to hear it. :-)

It should be obvious, but I guess it's also worth pointing out that in the video, the demo is completely live. Everything you are hearing was played in realtime, on-the-spot, directly digital output from the laptop into the video.

There are no tricks here, the bass is completely naked and exposed with zero processing or sequencing tricks of any kind.

Try doing this live demo with this "imaginary, perfect 1mb bass". :-)

It's worth keeping in mind that Bass ALWAYS sounds better in a track. So imagine how well having an instrument that sounds as good as it does under the most difficult, exposed, realtime situation like Trilian does in the video will sound once you add all the clever sequencing/arranging/mixing tricks.

Makes sense...right?

That's why we demo'ed it this way......no smoke and mirrors, no drum loops, no accompaniment, no auto-tuned Britney Spears...no nothing. Just the instrument straight out of the computer.

Regarding memory efficiency and bass sounds:

Just so you know, I've created almost all of the bass sounds in Roland's hardware instruments for the last 20 years too, so I know all about how to get good sounds in an efficient memory size and how to work around lots of technical limitations and still get a good sound.

After all these years of creating bass sounds, it's clear that more detailed sampling and higher audio resolutions do indeed make a major difference.

And again, the reason for the size is not just the detail, but the variety of sounds in the library.

There are numerous other Bass products on the market that have single Bass instruments sampled with comparable size and similar detail. So gigabytes being used for one bass is not so unusual at all, and in fact it's quite the standard if you look around.

In Trilian, the reason it's so huge is because there are so MANY basses. There are over 60 different electrics, more than 5 different acoustics, and over 300 synths too.

Our sampling is extremely efficient and there is absolutely no waste at all. We are just taking it to the next logical step of development for realtime expression and variety of sound.

You know it's hilarious, because all the exact same arguments were made here on KvR when we released Trilogy more than 7 years ago.

The posts were almost word for word identical, but about a 3gb instrument. In those 7 years, Trilogy was the most popular Bass instrument on the market and used in many hit records.

Hopefully, all the identical complaining about size is another good omen for Trilian. :-)

I tend to think our customers are a whole lot smarter than that.

What they care about is the sound and the expression/musicality....not the size.

If we could have achieved this kind of result in a smaller memory size, that would be great....but it doesn't work that way. Ultimately, what makes the best sound is what wins out.

I dont understand the people bashing trilian. if you dont like trilian or what it has to offer just dont get it,simple as that.

Some people are just miserable in life. My suggestion to them is to just kill yourself and have a good day.

I will get my copy of trilian on tuesday. I Cant wait. :D
