Yeah, this is a great idea. C'mon My SankeyWankey, pull out synth1 and get a nasty bassline that blows Trillian out of the water! Hell, I'll even go so far as to record you a couple of notes with my custom 5 string! Wait.. that would be over 1 meg..standalone wrote:If you want anyone to respect you here, catch that midi file that Dr.Wu offers you and show us how good 1MB instruments sound in year 2009.
Spectrasonics Trilian...(Omnisphere v.1.1 now out with native x64 support!)

actually, for me it is the other way around....i find that difference in velocity, articulation, where the string is hit (quite extensively covered in this case) is what makes the sound more 'human'.....round robins are fundamental to this illusionTren wrote:Sascha: My supposed 'contradiction' was actually because the human touch/soul I'm talking about is with regards to rhythmic timing than it is clever sample round robin playback or 'extra realistic fret noises'.
When I'm talking about Pop/Rock I'm on about tracks by Coldplay, Green Day etc. Hardly something where bass is usually that important in the mix. A well played and sequenced 1MB bass patch perhaps through an amp modeller or something WILL do the job very well, just like was mentioned earlier in the thread by sonkeysankey. It's about natural timing of the MIDI rather than a hard quantized thing.
That natural timing is easier to achieve with an actual bass, hence why I now use one - that and it's a lot more fun actually playing and performing the thing for real!
Cheers
the rhythmic argument always confused me a little.....it is most commonly discussed about drum programming....the idea that we should create imperfections to make it human.......as a musician very keen about rhythm , i'm pretty anal about timing......imagine getting steve gadd down on a track, playing to a click, not a beat out of time......what then???
"cheers steve....that was great ...go grab a coffee while we pull some of your hits off the grid to 'humanise' your performance"
what makes it a human performance is the nuances from velocity and placement of the hits......the ghosting...just every thing
just to clarify, i'm not talking about drummers intentionally 'driving' the beat or pulling back the timing a little
i'm also still confused about the whole 'sitting in the mix' thing......the kind of music that has little dynamic variation and is full on all the time might not show all nuances......we shall see whether the , soon to come, synth patches make this a really desirable synth/electronic bass library
the sounds that push this way above the normal harddrive footprint and memory load are probably not going to be used for choons that have many other elements, covering them
listen to 'bloom' by nirvana or 'gigantic' by the pixies....even choons that rock out have sections of real dynamic contrast that allow the bass to shine through....the 'bloom' example is something i doubt could be created effectively with your 1meg patch....certainly not as convincingley as that hot electric bass eric is demo'ing
then check anything by weather report, or joni mitchells 'shadows and light' and listen to jaco pastorious in action...show me the 1 meg patch here
the instruments that stand out in this vst are likely to be used in recordings that are more open and sparse......however, those who reaise that getting things to sit in a mix involves carving out a space for them, rather than just chosing a patch and expecting that it would be able to be all things to all pieces of music
if you make electronic music, this thing might offer some great stuff, but you'd probably do well with other vst's
but people who do have a more eclectic itunes library seem to agree that this is something very special indeed

The funny thing here is that I don't think anyone has argued that Trilian sounds bad. It's just that it is "unnecessarily good", and for some reason that is wrong.

I think you totally nailed it!
While some people were busy bitchin i was enjoying some more music makin using Trilian.
Here is another example of the kind of realism that can be achieved using highdefinition bass sounds
Good luck doing that with a 1 meg Soundtank patch.......

Oh, that's not fair - you're comparing apples and oranges here: With the 1meg patch you'll have to use the 10kb "Jaco Pastorius and Tal Wilkenfeld"-expansion pack to get this sound!

Sorry for the silly post: I'm stuck at the office, while Trilian is waiting in my mail-box at home...

"unnecessarily good"......those who are of this opinion would be justified in not wasting unnecessary money or harddrive space.....Captain wrote:The funny thing here is that I don't think anyone has argued that Trilian sounds bad. If you can guarantee that owning Trilian will get me into that sort of shape, I'll buy three copies!

i think you'll find that the expansion pack was cut down to 4kb due to too many complaints about its size and unnecessary bloat....and complaints about its unnecessary unnecessary-ness
sounds like complete crap in open arrangements but you should hear it 'in the mix'

let's be honest - if you can't make a good sample with a couple of bytes you're a complete failure.
