Sonkeysankey, here's an A/B example (exactly the same MIDI file). It features Logic's built-in Jazz Upright vs one of Trilian's. Guess which is which:

Electric right now. But you never know what you will need/want tomorrow. It's absolutely a dream having such a quality and diversity at hand.

Cmon dude, load up some 1 mb bass patch and show us what you can do. The burden of proof is not on Dr Wu to make your case.
Back to the topic at hand.

I did explain why I can't do it... (apart from not having the time).Arglebargle wrote:Nice dodge, sonkeysankey. He gave you the MIDI file and you still can't prove your point.

As I said - go and listen to 99% of the music in the charts that uses synthetic basses.
Isn't that good enough? Obviously that music is far better than anything that i can produce - and proves my point more than adequately. Nobody is complaining about the basses that are in use in those songs, because they work perfectly well. There is only so much musical data your brain can take in at one time.
You're all failing to address my simple points, which are backed up by most of the music in the charts for the past 30 years.
Now then, let's ask ourselves: why aren't you all attacking the individual on here who TOLD ME TO KILL MYSELF for merely writing up my comments about Trilian?
Are you all (who have so far remained silent about his comments) seriously saying that my saying that I don't think Trilian is necessary for 99% of music, is worse, or the equivalent, of telling another forum member to kill themselves?
It just shows exactly what I'm trying to say - some people are constantly looking for a 'new' synth that will magically write their music for them, or somehow improve their music, and get extremely shirty when anybody bursts their bubble.
I can assure you that the vast majority of the public are not listening intently to the bass instrument in any song they like, to find subtle changes in the bass sound. That's why so many songs use what is almost a basic sine wave for the bass sound...

Can you do that in a mix for me?
So that the bass will be in the background, and masked by the melody and drums, etc. which is what 99% of music in the charts consists of?
While writing a bassline, soloing it, you can obviously hear what YOU have done to make it sound realistic, and are very aware of the individual nuances you have programmed into it, but when listening to the actual song, everybody else on the planet, who has no idea how you made the bassline, can't hear the difference...
Go and listen to a few albums from the past thirty years which used synths for the basses, and tell me where they could be improved.
Do you even understand the point I was making in the first place? Read Tren's post again.

Could this song be improved in any way by using a Trilian bass?
The Human League - Never Again.
Listen to the bass, which plays a large part in this song, and tell me how having a 'real' sounding bass would make the song better. Listen carefully to the bass as the song plays, and notice how much of it you can hear, and how much you can't hear at certain points, while the rest of the tracks are playing on top of it.
Obviously it sounds better if you listen to the non-super compressed Youtube version...

You're trying way too hard to be disparaging towards the bass.
You can't seem to grasp the fact that others may put more importance on it than you.

I think you're confused. I said that Buzz HAS the best sequencer ever invented.
Buzz is described as a tracker, not a sequencer.
Can any sequencer import a .bmx file?
The point still stands - for the vast majority of musicians, for the vast majority of music, you will not be able to hear the advantages that Trilian offers.
As I also clearly explained before, if this was an orchestral instrument, that enabled you to create incredibly realistic violins, trumpets, etc. which I totally agree ARE difficult to do with small samples, then I wouldn't even be talking about it, I'd be buying it.

Can 'Never Again' be improved? I see you're avoiding my questions.Ned Bouhalassa wrote:Pearls before swine, once again. Goodbye, and good bass.
Put your two different bass instruments in a MIX and we'll take it from there. But you won't, because it proves my point.

I don't remember saying that, nor did Tren.1-2-Many wrote:I simply don't agree with the premise that Bass doesn't matter all that much, especially in a mix. It's just not true. The bass "sound" (notes, tone, playing) in a piece of music matters just as much as any other instrument to my ears.
I said that the complexity that Trilian offers is not necessary because it will be INAUDIBLE.
Yes, and we already have thousands of fantastic tones to choose from - what I am talking about is the complexity that Trilian offers, and whether it is necessary and audible or not. That is pretty important, if it's going to take up so much of your system's resources.
Most bass players are just as picky about their tone and their instrument as any other musician, and having the right tone/instrument can really make or break a song.
Yes, and that doesn't negate anything I've said.
This goes for electronic music even more. Just think of the countless stories about people/producers searching for that 'bass sound', or finding just the right Kick in an electronic piece of music. Or all the playing about with filtering/pitching the Bass and Kick to play well together.
I pay plenty of attention to it. These personal attacks are laughable. First I'm deaf, then I'm not paying attention to bass lines, then I'm told I should kill myself. Welcome to the forum!
Plenty of attention has been paid to the lower part of the frequency spectrum, just because you don't pay it doesn't mean it's not important.
