The upright bass is an orchestral instrument.

I own a lot of software romplers.... Sampletank, Sonik Synth, Kontakt 3, Sonic Reality bass collection, Vi-One, and prolly some others. By and large, there are a few really good sounds and a whole lotta mediocre ones.

In my opinion, bass is an instrument that's rather sloppily done by most soundware companies.

I for one am glad that this thread isn't one-sided, with everyone blindly praising the product, however seeing criticisers of the importance of this product being told to 'kill themselves' is frankly ridiculous.

I personally agree that this is a big sample library, and by and large bass within a mix does not require the level of articulation this product will provide. That, I guess, was the argument being put forward by sonkeysankey and he is definitely right; especially in pop/rock,
Thank you. That's exactly what I was trying to say.

Okay, Dr Wu - this track, for example:

What exactly is Trilian doing with the main bassline, that is so special? I can't hear it. Some vibrato, and what else?

I can't use your MIDI file because I doubt Buzz will import it...

Couldn't you just easily substitute a 1MB bass sound, or a synth bass, and let us hear the difference?

For my side of the argument - just listen to 99% of the top 100 albums which use a synth of some description for the bass. How would you even hear Trilian, or care, in a song such as Kirsty Hawkshaw's "Reach for me" (Solasso Remix), or Adamski's "Killer", or anything by hundreds of other bands who use synths for their bass sounds?

I don't hear anything special about the basses in your song demos, Dr Wu - what am I missing?
See-there is your problem.
Your knowledge of musicproduction seems to be not sufficient to understand whats going on in that bassline.
That particular bassline is using lots of X-notes, glisses, slides, stacattos you name it.
All good things that provide the spice that makes it sound realistic. Plus each note is round robin so if i hit the same note twice it will sound slightly different. Maybe thats to subtle for your perception. But i can certainly appreciate it.
But why dont you try it for yourself and see how far you can get with your tracker software.

SonekeySankey, or whatever your name is, you don't know what your talking about.

Listen to this short demo I made last night with Trilian and Omnisphere, and show us something better with your Buzz sequencer:

That cutting bass sound is what Trilian is also very good at, it isn't just acoustic basses.

Cmon dude, load up some 1 mb bass patch and show us what you can do. The burden of proof is not on Dr Wu to make your case.

Back to the topic at hand. ;)

Has everyone gotten a chance to see the videos? Here's a question: Which types of bass sounds will you primarily be using in your music? 1)Acoustic 2)Electric or 3)Synth?

Best,
really wish i hadn't seen the videos

when finances permit, i will enjoy all the types of sounds, though the accoustic and electric fretless have opened up some fantastic ideas for some of my 'work in progress'

The proof that there's no need for many articulations in a bass-library, let alone subtle nuances:

no...nothing can save that song......:D

it uses a sound that can be achieved with anything......this wouldn't be worth buying trillian for

and i don't get the point....the bass in that song suits it, so what's the issue.....

i'm still trying to get to the bottom of this 99% of songs business...isn't it that all the music you enjoy uses synth bass , therefore you can't begin to comprehend what this is about...

Have you been at Ronnie Scott's?? (Where's that envy emoticon, when you need it...)

actually, i take that back... i reckon i could put a nicer bass in that song...but seeing as everyone has an opinion of what nice/good is, it is irrelevant...

anyway...no more feeding the troll

Can 'Never Again' be improved? I see you're avoiding my questions.

Put your two different bass instruments in a MIX and we'll take it from there. But you won't, because it proves my point.
no, it's beyond help. The fact of you not understanding someone else's need for something which sounds better than the kind of music you think is 'good enough' is equally beyond help.

loved it...i think.....it was hard to tell cause it got lost in the mix....maybe that human league bass sound would have been better

by the way, soggyhankey, i didn't mean to imply you were deaf...just thought that maybe a wax buildup was stopping you experiencing the beauty....sorry if i offended you...truly :(

Hi,

I am not sure there is an unambiguous answer to this debate. I have experienced situations where the most dull Akai S1000 or 900 bass has sat perfectly in a mix and larger, more expressive patches have struggled. I have also heard the converse where a large dynamic bass sample is required or a real player. Depends on the music and the situation.

I am happy that trilian is on its way over the Atlantic for me to install on my PC (particularly as i now have Omnisphere working properly). I have the choice to use patches that are large or small. I like that. I doubt I have the skill to use it properly but I have time to learn.

best wishes, Neil

ps where I come from the little boy who said the Emperor has no clothes was right but this is a poor analogy to apply to the Spectros. They are above this but I appreciate the attempt to give them respect.

A lot of produced pop music which uses electric/acoustic bass instruments does not feature bass solos and usually does not feature parts of the song where the bass is exposed very much if at all. Therefore if that kind of music is the kind being composed predominantly, then Trilian is a luxury rather than a necessity. There is nothing wrong with expressing that opinion, although it may be met with strong rebuking to prevent it taking the shine off the new product people are enjoying. I don't think it's trolling!

To anyone who doubts the importance of rhythmic timing over clever sample libraries, please read this:

http://www.numericalsound.com/dna-groov ... notes.html

Hard quantized acoustic drums and bass sound awful and anyone who can't hear that or hear the huge difference between Gadd playing to a click, compared with a mechanized MIDI beat, needs their ears tested FAR more than someone who can't hear the difference IN A MIX between a 1MB well programmed and played bass patch and Trilian's fancy big presets. In my humble opinion.

As Neil said, there isn't an absolute right or wrong for this; but it seems to me that Trilian is certainly not the necessity some people are claiming it is.

In a nutshell, if Trilian's acoustic/electric module were a person, it'd be Victor Wooten - kind of total talent overkill for your usual rock/pop bassist wouldn't you say? - especially if the bass is simply underpinning the chords of the song with a few occasional counterpoint parts!

Looks like Sonkeysankey has left the forum... too afraid to show his face.

Let's see him produce something like this with his 'tracker':
