How come noone thought of this before? Or is this a compressor in disguise?

Now all we need is some plugin designer to make something similar for more cheap.

Sounds like a clean (i.e. non-coloring) compressor to me. And if one really has problems with this, why not just draw automation in one's host? You could even draw automation, then afterwards route the vocal to a buss so you were always hitting a compressor with approximately the same volume to get a nice even level of compression there for some extra smoothness.

yes you could but that seems to be missing the point. This one was designed so you don't have to draw this in with automation. It makes sense to me, as this could react to the volume more quickly and consistently.

But it's waves so it costs ridiculous. I am betting many programmers around here can recreate something like this quite easily.

It's not entirely the same as a common compressor.
Attack and release times are probably slower and the compression curve seems to be slope-flat-slope:

This is nice: "Write the automatic riding to an automation track for fine tuning."
That makes it certainly different from compressors.

Um...well. Facetiousness aside (...sorry), this does sound suspiciously like some kind of compressor, doesn't it? A compressor that's optimised for vocals and for fairly specific results, but a compressor nonetheless.

Which is interesting, because I thought the whole point of automating volume changes in vocal tracks was that sometimes managing dynamics automatically (using, for instance, a "compressor") was not the best way. So maybe Waves are really on to something here.

Or maybe not. I'm unlikely to find out personally - at least in the short term - because I don't have 400USD to spare on a new compressor. So has anyone actually tried it...?

I'm guessing yeah it's a compressor, but it'll have a very large RMS window and long attack and release settings. If they've been successful it shouldn't sound like a compressor at all just like manually riding the gain or setting gentle automation curves - should either of those be considered compression?

I think it just writes volume automation in a defineable range.

I've been meaning to demo VocSteady

I just did. It's awesome - smooth, no pumping, and sounds great. I think i'm going to buy it if it'll work on my system (XP 64bit, Sonar 8 ).
