I'm looking for anything at all -- whether it be effects, samples, sample libraries, sequencers, etc. I want to hear all about the VSTs that would be outstanding for Drum'n'Bass.

Anything with the ability to tweak spend a day with a ton of synths and you will have loads of presets to go for the next year. But if you want sounds easy to dial up via presets, don't miss out on Analog warfare (Assuming you just want the bass sounds) Easiest way is to go to gersic.com and search through the tons of free synths available.

What kind of dnb are you looking to make? There's a lot of variation within the genre.

For techy stuff and twisting up basslines, z3ta+ and Massive are two of the best.

You might want to investigate and get the DVD for Issue No. 115 (August 2007) of COMPUTER MUSIC Magazine. There are a ton of free samples in there fit for drum-n-bass. I used a whole bunch of them by Andrew Duke and Hattrixx.

But if you want to produce that stuff which sounds more like trance, that's not going to be a good solution... anyway, I like the drum-n-bass done from 2001 and earlier, more of the jazzy, soulful stuff...

For drill'n'bass Venetian Snares type stuff, your best friend is a tracker like Renoise - it's supremely easy to do crazy things to breakbeats with this that would take a lot longer to achieve in most plug-ins but does demand you learn a quite unusual interface.

Or you can use one of the many ensembles written for Reaktor - L3 is especially addictive. I've noticed a few ensembles turn up for doing dirty Reese-type basses, or you can use Massive for that. As suggested, Kontakt is good, especially if you want very precise control over beat slicing - it's got a steep learning curve but is very powerful. (In short, you might as well get Komplete).

For basses, Rob Papen/Linplug Albino can do a very good job because the built-in effects make the dirtying-up job more straightforward (the compressor can do some very nasty things) and it provides a lot of control over the core waveforms as well as the modulations. I've not really pushed it that way but Strobe in Synth Squad should do a good job with typical DnB basses.

For free, try out some of the Smartelectronix stuff such as LiveCut. There are a ton of bass, saturation and distortion effects out there for Windows at least. Mac is a bit tougher, but the TAL stuff is all cross-platform.

What's a VST that would be phenomenal for DnB?
