Hey,
I have just reinstalled my OS and installed all music software,plugins,drivers....

Is there a way to make an image of this setup configuration so that if one day I need to reinstall my OS and wipe out the drive I can get it back all working with my perfect working daw setup config?

Norton Ghost

and some free ones too.

These days, the manufacturer of your hard disk may supply a free app too.

Try the free DiscWizard from Seagate, it's basically am OEM version of Acronis True Image. It also allows you to upgrade to the full version of Acronis True Image Home 2010 for $30.

I recently switched to Acronis from Norton Ghost as it's now a better product IMHO.

Acronis (both the Seagate and Full versions) also has the advantage of a decent Boot CD which you can use to make a backup and restore. This means you don't need the program installed on your PC, unless you want regular, scheduled backups. The installed program does use some system resources as it moniters your system for changes. For a DAW, I try to have it as lean as possible, hence I don't have it installed. You will need to install it to create the boot CD though.

I still don't get it how that is gonna work because some of the application I have installed for example DFH have two parts to the installation:
1: drummer interface
2: sound installer

so does that mean I just leave my samples on a seperate drive in the same exact place and when I launch Acronis ghost software everything will work fine,
without having to go through every single vst plugin installation?

Pretty much. I have my samples on an external drive and I use them on 2 machines.

There may be a few exceptions but it's worked with everything I've done it with. The only thing I can think of, that may be a problem, is if the serial of the sample drive changes and is checked by the plugin. I've never heard of this though.

I'm not sure about the DVD (as I never do it) but internal/external hard drive is fine. I wouldn't recommend going straight to DVD but backup to hard drive first. Also this allows you to create an ISO (image to be burned to DVD) with the archive and the boot cd together. When you create the backup, always verify it and then if you burn it to DVD, verify this also. I would also use a good quality DVD, preferable archive quality if available.

You could also try Drive Image XML run. They have youtube video for making a bootable cd with it if you want.

Laptop user: After a backup with Acronis on a external usb-hd, I replace the laptop-hd with a spare one, and then do a restore from the usd-hd. In case of problems I just replace the hd. Fortunately never happened. Replacing a hd is faster then a restore from Dvd or Usb-hd

Hey, I am trying out Acronis True Image.
I have read the instructions but I'm still not 100% sure which option I should use if I want to recover c drive (windows + software) so that if something goes wrong, it comes back to the setting I had when all software and applications were installed, I'm not talking about firefox, skype, messenger, I'm talking about DFH, BFD, Cubase, and other applications.

Which option do I need to choose to back up c drive so that when it reverts to it, every single software is installed at the time the image was created?

What options are available in the english version? You must not use the "data" option but the "other" (disk, drive??) one.

Here are the options avaible:

File backup:

my data
system state (create backup of your current system state)
my email
my application settings; when I select this option, it displays all the applications that are installed but it's only the factory os ones: -internet explorer/-firefox/-windows media player.
None of the other applications/software/vst plugins/other apps show up so I guess that is no good???

disk backup (disk and partition backup)
clone disk
disk and partition backup

ultimately, what i need is image of OS with applications and then all my data will be stored on a different HD so no need to back up data.

So then:

Image your system drive (and all data on it) using the disk and partition backup option.

If your "real" data are on another partition (or drive) go with the file backup option.
