are there any sample libraries for pad samples (not chords, or sound effects, but pad "instruments")?

Post

Yes there is, and I'm always hunting for more, myself :D

First of all, I recommend you check Spectrasonics Atmosphere. Its loaded with tons of lovely pads, sorted in many categories. It contain chord-like pads as well in the ambient category, but apart from that, there are hundreds of pads that aren't chords... It really is the best sounding pad-library I've come across. Great collection!

Other than that, there are some Akai-format sample CDs (that you can convert into Soundfonts like I did) most are out of stock and out of sale, since they are 10 years old or more, but ... search and you shall find:

Heavenly Pads and Chords.
XXLarge - Pads.
Plugsound vol 5 Synths.

...and some more, but I don't remember the names... Most CDs contain both chords and single-note-pads. Some are great sounding. Better than most VSTi soft-synths... Still, you won't go wrong with Spectrasonics Atmosphere as a good starting point.

If I may be so bold...

Might I suggest my own NEBULAE collection of pads perhaps?

what's the format of the samples in Atmosphere?

If you are still looking in a few weeks, my new library will finally be coming to light. All pads, pretty affordable as well. But no release date set yet.

It's just one giant file. I have no idea about the format of that file, but Atmosphere comes with it's own VSTi player.

I hope people think it's good. Just had several delays in getting it out. The name of the library is "Padstruction" in case you are watching out for it. There is a thread from several months ago with some preliminary audio demos here in the samples forum somewhere.

Not solely pads, but Zero-G's Nostalgia VSTi is a Kontakt-based sample player full of old-school sounds. There is a lot of pad material in there, and it comes with the Kontakt library so you can use it in full-blown Kontakt if you want. I use it mainly for vintage string sounds or 80's-type digital rompler pads and atmospheres. Its been around for a while now.

Unfortunately not (K3.5) but the S5000 version would convert fine to K2 I think.

You can test using some of the S5/6000 freebies HERE

I have/like Ethereal from Precisionsound, and numerous pads for Wusik.

okay guys...a little update. i bought a "XXLarge - Pads" CD off eBay, and I gotta say, there are some WICKED pads in there! however, i think i've realised what i'm REALLY looking for: instead of just regular synth/organ/string sounding pads, i'm looking for amnbient, atmospheric stuff...stuff that doesn't stand out too much in the mix, but works well for adding background color & textures to the music. any recommendations on what i should be checking out this time?

In fact there are some free plugs in the DC09 contest that can do this really nicely. Experimenting with some of them I was able to create pad sounds very easily. Have a look at Antopya, Amphetamine or even some pads in massTURBOtar.

Also many other free plugs like Crystal can do a fair job.

As for Atmosphere, it is now include in Omnisphere which have a huge selection of sounds, and many good pads as well. (Totally worth the price)

I personally rarely use samplers for pads, I fund synths to do a better job for this. There is some good pads samples in Wuzikstation too.

About the "googling" thing, let's say I have my doubts, nothing more nothing less.
