I'm not quite sure how that is relevant to the OP, but FWIW these days I am roughly 50/50 Cubase and Ableton. So a foot in both camps

Ableton could certainly benefit from the dynamic CPU handling offered by VST3 - Cubase 5 is WAAAAAY more efficient with plugs, and Ableton is notoriously poor in this area. So I hope Ableton go for it soon :D

I understood what he's saying. There are features of VST 2.4 that work in hosts such as Ableton Live that don't work in Cubase. To remedy the issue Steinberg didn't fix Cubase's implementation of VST2.4, they created VST3. This works to Steinberg's advantage because the nature of gear whores is to covet the highest number. That means that regardless of weather or not there is any technical advantage for Ableton, Cakewalk, etc. to adopt VST3, their users will demand that it be done... because 3 > 2.4

As far as VST3 implementation in hosts... I think they'll trickle in and once all of the major hosts support it, plug-in developers will feel more pressure to support it. I think that x64 plug-ins will take longer to catch on because the only things (as I understand it) that really benefit from running at 64bit natively are sample players and hosts (stuff that use a ton of RAM).

It's exactly what I thought !

But VST3 is welcome too.

Info from Steinberg wrote: Optional VST3/SKI combination
As a direct result of the modular interface design of VST3, the Steinberg Kernel Interface (SKI) can be combined with VST3 plug-ins. SKI is an additional SDK that allows extremely close integration of a plug-in with a Steinberg host application, and allows functions to be carried out almost from within the application. This extends to the ability to create tracks, copy, cut, paste or process events in the Steinberg host application. SKI is provided to selected industry partners upon request.
Do you know any SKI plugin? Will this power to mess with the host's kernel be useful some day? I was thinking about some sampler which automatically "downloads" the song into the host arranging the audio clips with fades/effects/volume envelopes just as if they were triggered inside the sampler.. I don't know.... A more powerful melodyne-like pitch correction...
Perhaps a new level of horrible crashes is ahead.
What do you think about SKI?

Just to add to this thread, apparently the D4 compressor from Roger Nichols Digital is also VST3. So one would assume that possibly the other plugins would follow. But who knows.

FL Studio recently released a beta VST3 wrapper.

Hey, so they did!

OT, but is "gear whore" a useful term? Doesn't that imply that we get some sort of monetary gain from having more gear, instead of using the term "gear slut" where you get get used and degraded by your gear? :hihi:

Well, it seems that Elysia Mpressor has released a VST3 version now officially, and I'm sure the other Brainworx-coded plugs are not far behind(since he said they would all be made VST3 compatible).

But I have noticed more and more support for VST 3.

Also, the dev at Brainworx, who also has coded the SPL plug-ins and the Elysia Mpressor, on top of his many plug-ins, has said that VERY soon(within the month) everything will be ported to VST3.

I believe Vienna Ensemble Pro either comes as VST3 plug-in, or hosts them. I haven't tried yet to be honest, but it's listed on the product page somewhere.
other than these internal cubase plugs, which I haven't much use for or I don't think I do, VE Pro is the only VST3 I know. It is a VST3 or VST2 in the vsti rack in Cubase. The former (there are three slanted bars before the words VE Pro in the drop down menu) means you can specify the maximum of midi ports (32) or audio ins back into cubase (128), the latter means you can't. Under OSX, it only hosts AU.components so I don't know about vst anything there. Considering everything VSL does is high end, I would doubt it doesn't host VST3.

I was about to move to Logic until VE Pro, which has improved my workflow, meaning mainly my latency vs how much I hear, so much that I'm not that likely to abandon cubase... except for very particular requirements I would maybe find out about somehow... I don't know if the VST2 version is as snappy or not, I haven't bothered with it.
But, VST3 means something here in practical terms.

I think a VST2 wrapper for VST3 would be awesome to allow our plugins to continue to work with older hosts.. ie SoundForge8.
