My mouth's too big !
Me and knowing very well my headphones...

...I was too pretentious ! My remastering seems to have turned into the invention of a sound canon !
The pumping basses blew every cable out of the mixing table and the sharp 's' of the singer has cut a hole in the window. :hihi:

All of it because I refuse to take away that last funny cussing yell I added the other night, crossing the 3 minutes line with 200 milliseconds !

So tomg got pissed off... Maybe we should give him a prize. 8)
We still have that free foot voyage to the North Pole to give away...

Cheers,

Max... .. . :P

PS : tomg, don't forget, before you leave the café, to tell the bartender the size of the boot you got (and mention if it's left or right 8) ), for the next Boot Exchange Day (KvR-BED).
Carpo diem ergo sum !

I think I see what is this month about, piss other contestants so much they would withdraw, last one standing wins.

Not really, I put on a lot, I hardly ever actually get pissed off but I had worked up all this anger... and. Well he asked for anger didn't he?

Beyond that, I really do think the 3:00 rule is bad for the art. IMO It should be, try for 3 but we'll give you another 45 seconds to wind it down.

But I didn't withdraw. I got canned.

tomg, I think your post about the 3 minute limit and hits is in the wrong thread (it is in the "KVR member releases - GOSSIP" thread). I'm assuming you meant it to go in this one, but if I'm mistaken, nevermind.

Thanks.. cut and moved.

Moved...

I'm sure I'm not the first member to say it but... Due to recent developments here, I did a little research and got some interesting results. Did you know that a reasonably modern pop song averages 3:45. Only 2% are less than three minutes.

Looking at 700 songs from '81 to '87 there were 14 top 100 songs that came in under 3:00.

2 - 81
6 - 82
2 - 83
1 - 84
0 - 85
1 - 86
2 - 87

The reason for that is, it usually takes more that 3:00 to do a proper song. In order to do an intro, 2 verses, 2 choruses, a middle and out, 98% of the time, you need more than 3:00.

If the purpose of this contest is to determine if the rules can be followed a 3:00 clock is a good measuring stick. However if the purpose is to help developing musicians develop their art it needs to be more flexible IMO.

EDIT: I should add that these are very loose numbers .... If someone really gathered them together and did a hard crunch, the percent might move some.

OTOH even if it moved (no way) 8% that would still mean that 90% of the time you need more than 3:00 to do a proper song.

Last month's contest had a time limit of 1 minute. (Three 1 minute tracks)

I think the time constraint is likely a part of the creative challenge of these contests. Plus, it makes it easier to listen and vote for all of the tracks...I'm sure not too many people would want to sort through 20 or so 10 minute long submissions.

I guess that can be a little fun but it's also pretty pointless IMO. When was the last time you heard a 60 second song on the radio? Most likely never. You know why? It's because most people can't write anything close to a proper song that only lasts 60 seconds. 98% can't be done properly in 3 minutes.

If you are going to run a song contest, there is the reality of song writing to consider.

Its unlikely you'd hear most of the entires on the radio anyhow. Radio-friendly or "commercial" isn't always part of the themes, and in many cases it probably isn't. Not everything is verse/chorus format, nor is it always a call for proper songs. Sometimes you have to think outside of the box, so to speak.

We used to have 2 minute limit default, it was only extended recently. Consider that in the end you need to listen to all entries to vote. Without a reasonable time limit it could be a bit of a pain, count downloading bandwidth and listening time, this is for practical reasons and it's a good rule.

Not allowing enough time to do a proper song in a song contest is a serious flaw in thinking. FAIL

A reasonable time limit would allow for a proper song. The average pop song is 3:45. Another 45 seconds is not going to make anything any harder but it will allow time to actually do a song.
