XT Software

Greetings.

Please forgive me if this topic has been done to death elsewhere. I have had a good look and haven't found much, so here goes.

I am looking to upgrade my hardware soon (P4HT 3GHz, 3GB RAM, XPSP3 32Bit) and it looks like Windows 7 is the OS on offer these days.
My kids have Vista Home Premium on their laptops and I loathe it.
I have put off upgrading my hardware until Win7 arrived.

So, as Win7 has now been out for a little while, does anybody have any experiences, good or bad, of running XT2.5 and common plugins on the new OS?
I am less worried about hardware and ASIO drivers etc as I plan to replace my cruddy Behringer USB audio interfaces soon anyway.

I am committed to keeping on with XT so "Change Hosts!" is not gonna happen!

Can of worms now officially open.

I use Windows 7 on two of my computers, both of which run XT1.4 and XT2.5, and it is f**king awesome.

Hey, that's great to hear! I was worried that there might be an avalanche of "Don't do it!"s so it's nice to get a good vibe straight off.

Are you using a 32 bit or 64 bit version?

I run it on Win7 too, no problems, win7 is a bit buggy here and there but nothing major.

I run x64 on both systems (laptop and desktop). Works great for me, so much better than Vista. I didn't even start using XP until service pack 3, but I'm using the Windows 7 RC and it is far better and more stable.

Interesting. If they finally conquer the gradual slowdown that you see in XP (not to mention Vista, which started slow) I'll definitely be moving over to Win7.

Win7 is much better than XP. I also found Vista SP2 much better than XP too.

Go with 64bit version.

xt 2.5 ran fine on the w7RC I tried.

XT2 *isn't* a 64 bit app. But it will run just fine on 64 bit windows as long as you run it as a normal 32 bit app.

Keep in mind that 99.99% of all VSTs have a 32 bit version (or are exclusive to 32 bit architecture) and that 32 bit VSTs will not run in a 64 bit host without some sort of adapter. There are very few 64 bit VSTs out there right now at all.

Hmmmm..

Thanks everyone for the swift replies. It looks like a "maybe" for 64 bit operation, doesn't it? In 64bit Win7, is there an option to run in "32bit compatibility mode" or somesuch and, if so, can anyone report on performance impact?

I don't have any problem running XT2 in Win7 64-bit. I don't know why you guys have problems, XT2 is a normal 32-bit .exe so Win 7 should have no problem running it without relying on some sort of special compatibility mode.

Compatibility mode is for programs that sometime bypass API calls to do something specific or programs compiled with very old compilers/libraries/frameworks.

XT2 is a normal 32-bit app.

I am running XT on my 64-bit system, I just couldn't run it in the 64-bit folder as it is a 32-bit program. Once I just moved it to the 32-bit folder it ran fine again.
