Tried it last night, wow! What is coming online for free makes it harder to justify spending $ on commercial releases. Maybe paying for amp modeling is becoming obsolete

Checked out "NoAmp!" last night. It's a model of the Tech 21 Sansamp (I believe). Another freebie :)

Check it out

I went back to exploring the POD Farm sounds the other day to try and understand why I moved away from them. They actually sound quite nice and do a good job of creating gain without getting harsh. Right away though, I knew what bothered me about them...they sound "distant". Does that make sense? Compare Amplitube and POD Farm and you should hear what I'm describing. POD Farm sounds further away and less detailed. Since it's all just 1s and 0s (bits) it makes me wonder...what makes some modeling sound more detailed than others? Oversampling? I need to know these things :? :)

Waveshapers vs circuit modeling maybe?

I picked up pod farm when it was free (is it still free? ) and it didn't click with me. The impression it left me with was one dimensional, so I guess I felt the same way. I should however give it more time, I got GR3 roughly the same time which led to a free upgrade to GR4. Poor pod farm got pretty much ignored at that point.

About the sansamp model it is quite good, the sansamp model in GR4 didn't impress me at all but this one did. You're right about the freebies being awesome, that's why I suggested the op use freebies to get an idea of what he wants and doesn't want.

Thanx for the heads up on waves, it's very tempting. The holidays are coming though and I have to cut back on my spending, samp 11 pro upgrade is next on my list. I'm really looking forward to Vandal, I've been hearing good things about it and sascha's fx in samp are fantastic. But still waves is a god deal and I really do not want the interface, I only am using sims for re-amping anyhow. :)

You are aware GTR Solo is free for one year and doesn't need a dongle (still Pace though) ? The full verson is iLok only afaik.
Imho the cabs are the biggest drawback of Waves, too.
The amps are quite good, some even great (e.g. the Super), decent FX and a rather practical UI including drag'n'drop.
Since GTR3 is quite old now I'd consider using the free Solo until GTR4 comes around.
And don't overlook the PRS interface, available separately and cheap, great audio quality and built like a tank, a perfect starting point for working with sims.

Rich I'm really pissed off at you now, thanx for the waves link  First I clicked the link but thought I had talked myself out of it because it was Musician's Fiend [sic], but audiomidi has it too. I have nothing against dongles but I don't want buy another, but I have an ilok. So now I'm flipping flopping back and forth, meanwhile I check my mail. My sister passed away in 02 and my dad in 06 so I often check the missing money lists, last year I found my sisters name on it. It's only 47 bux but it arrived today and quite literally is found money. I do the math and 135-47=good deal...so if I buy it then it's your fault :hihi:

but remember, I'm not going use it on an incoming signal...at this point I'm only interested in sims for re-amping. I'm thinking about it and again I already have an ilok...

This post was not only directed at you, Hink.
As the thread is about "best ampsim" and there are still plenty of folks not using a decent HiZ input I figured it might be worth a recommendation.
Cheers,

I've heard great things about that interface.

You are using a Radial DI if I'm not mistaken ?
They also make fine gear, no doubt.

no the aby, the best thing is the tuner/bypass output. I use that for the dry re-amp and still have the a/b channels. One goes right to the xt live and typically the other goes to a distortion+ > sansamp gt2, and with my set up I can monitor with fx but not record them or record them to other tracks. Before the Radial I used my Boss CH-1 to split the signal, now it's covered in dust. But that's why I want to keep to hardware, I never use the fx in the xt except for stomps though.

Gotcha, I'm working in a similar way.
I vaguely remember a discussion about these things in the past.
Of course with your active guitars you don't need HiZ or DI.

my jackson is passive, but I also have hi z imputs on both cards. But I don't think it matters because the xt and sansamp should do the job too and the dry signal actually passes through my bluetube pre-amp :)
