Yeah, all that matters for passive guitars is a HiZ input to eliminate PU loading.
Don't have any hands on experience with your devices, so no comment on these, but I'd personally rather not use a Boss pedal or similar for that job when at the same time everybody and his dog uses true bypass or loops in their live setup (for very audible reasons), mostly to eliminate the unwanted influence these cheap stomps can have on your tone even while in bypass.
Here I think a good dedicated DI can really make a difference, and @ ca $85 (JRR) the PRS for example is definitely affordable.

that is a good deal if you need it, I assume it's passive? I'm still thinking about GTR3, have you heard anything about Vandal? On the samp forums it seems to be well liked. But then I can't have too many options right?

huh? Off topic but I see JRR is now selling my cousin's mics (Guage)

Eric asked me about them when my cousin sent me one and I hooked the two up, I'm glad because they are pretty nice mics. :)

No, the PRS is active, standard 12V.
Completely transparent, zero noise.

Don't know about Vandal as it doesn't seem to be out yet as VST.
Certainly one to watch, Sascha knows his stuff.

yeah, I'm just waiting for a rollover to get my upgrade to samp 11. I could do it now but I promised myself I would wait

Yeah, I've seen them. They are on my "to try list" if I can get hold of one over here in Europe. A friend has a vintage U47, so a comparison will be interesting. No, I'm not expecting them to perform equally but hey, since it appears to be a copy ...
Mics and pres will be a bigger topic for me in a year or so, when I'll have my planned little studio up and running. Still looking for a suitable house atm.
Thanks for the heads up. :)

Hey everyone - i did this a while ago but it is actually relevent to this thread i think: I have had success with using IK AmpegSVX for use with high-gain sounds. The amp head is the BA-500 model, Cabinet the 1x15" with the horn/tweeter turned down, Sennheiser MD-421 in the 'near position' on axis/straight forwards. The Guitar is a Jackson/Charvel with just an EMG85 at the bridge and going straight into a Line6 ToneCore-Series Uber Metal Distortion Pedal. It might have far too much low-end for some peoples tastes but i find it handy as i write with Toontrack EZdrummer DFH or SD2 Default kit (I have not had the money for "The Metal Foundry SDX" :( and i want that one bad :hyper: ). So here is a some throw away metal riffage (fast, then melodic and then slow) with DFH leading the charge:

http://www.mediafire.com/?d0ij3zj4kng

So as it is at the moment my vote goes to AmpegSVX even though it is not primaraly aimed at electric guitar - it works well with that Line6 distortion pedal (one of very few that are not available via the pod range AFAIK) plus the down-tuned and heavy gauge strings that i go for (sort of like a seven string minus the highest string if you know what i mean)

Still its not as much fun as plugging into a real amp/cab but it does have the best feel out of all of them for my taste. The Pre is kept pretty clean and i like the scope of the tonestacks/active EQ i think. Only other plug-ins were parallel compression and a very short wizooverb almost all just ER biased reverb/reflections to glue it s bit FWIW. AmpegSVX also sounds real good for clean stuff for me also.

Hopefully have the chance to upload the real amp stuff i have done (mainly for my man SHOGGER :D )

Catch you all soon and all the best

Dean aka Nekro

btw: feel free to tear it apart if it sounds like shit to your ears everyone of course ;)

I Am still hunting for a replacement H&H Bass Amp 100 Tranny Head - it was splendid and i still pine for it and all the bi-amp output fun i used to have with it and it had full on bi-amped slave outs...the works...the one knob compressor was even usuable! I adore that amp

My call would be:

AmpliTude modelled amps by

Marshall Edition
Mesa/Boogie Edition (too many great amps/pre-amps...etc to mention!)
Koch
Dumble
Lagaboda
Bad Cat/could go into the "Matchless Edition" as susi preposed?
Framus
David Eden
SWR
Hayden - their latest real amp head the MoFo is fuckin dope for any style and is very well priced
Custom Audio Electronics (with all the various factory mods available)
...and a hell of alot more besides

Yeah a "Stompbox and Rack Edition" i could see that being very do-able and popular (it worked for Line6 for example)

Hi Dean,
never pretended to know anything about modern metal guitar  so it's purely an "outsider" opinion ...
To me your clip sounds perfectly fine, I wouldn't have guessed your SVX or downtuning/string gauge, so apparently the concept works. :tu:
That said, the ultra fat squeals in pt.3 sound pretty unique and hint at something out of the ordinary.
I would not say your tone has too much bass in this scenario, might be different in a full mix, not sure.
Would it be possible to alternatively render that clip with your best "non-bass amp" tone, hardware, software, a mix of both, doesn't matter, to give us a comparison ?

"See" you soon, been a bit under water for a while  , sorry, new band (lots of repertoire to learn), important mixing job, some real life duties, hope it will get better after the weekend.
Cheers,

Bad cat is an emu I'd be interested in for sure.

How bout a Diamond, Laney, Bogner, Diezel, Hughes and Kettner, for a new metal line of amps. I would also say Engl but two very good emulations have been released lately. I guess Nick Crow does a very good Bogner emu.

+1 for a good Badcat/Matchless emu. Even though I like Revalver's Matchbox tone, I have no real world experience with either. Or a boutique/custom line of amp sims like Fuchs, Oldfield, Brunetti etc.

A stompbox/pedal board only edition would be really cool as well.

I have the PRS interface and find it unusable because the batteries die too quickly (to be expected, right?) and for the life of me, I can't find a plug (with proper voltage) to match the damn thing. Mine didn't come with a wall wart. How do you get around this? Did you find one with the correct voltage? I tried a few places and just gave up.

Also, I prefer the RME FireFace HiZ input. The PRS rounds off a bit of the highs. Well, but then again, for amp modeling maybe that's what is desirable? Sometimes a bright (fully transparent) D.I. seems to be a hindrance when using software that accentuates even more highs (think Guitar Rig). The whole thing is one giant OCD affair for me

Well, what do I know?

They recently upgraded GTR3 with some new models from Neil Citron that sound pretty good :D

Check it out! and watch the videos

Impressive, huh? Well, I just bought Overloud TH1 so it may have to wait a little while yet :(

Never even tried batteries, it's a standard 12V DC connection. I happened to have a suitable PSU lying around, but it should be pretty easy to find one, you might have to change the plug but that's fast and painless.
I believe the Rocktron 12V DC adapters should fit, simply try at your store.
And re sound, now that speaker sims have finally gotten better the WavesPRS shows its full potential. :tu:
And while not integrated, a bit of gentle treble rolloff or boost before the sim should not degrade your signal noticeably. The RME has decent inputs so in theory you would not need a DI.
Personally I use the split function of the PRS all the time for monitoring (tube pre to board) so I'm independent of latency considerations. I routinely record both signals and mix'n'match later.
BTW, what does OCD mean ? I only know the Fulltone pedal.
