A question about the Clean Fender.
On my system the low velocity of the Fingered Clean Fender Sustain sounds like muted.
It sounds almost like the preset Muted Clean Fender Sustain.
The transition to the next velocity level is therefore strange as in the next velocity level you can clearly hear the string vibrating.
I can hardly believe that this is the way it should be.
Any idea?

Best regards

this one is using a bunch of patches that i made myself by combining one of the Stick soundsources and the 8string bass or in case of the leadsound by applying some noise FM to one of the sinewaves in Trilian.

Yeah - I guess that's the way it is. I also noticed that with legato on - the second note (hammer on) is always pretty loud - even if you take the MIDI velocity right down. I guess we just have to learn how it sounds and work with it. I'm sure it's going to sound fine in a mix ;-)

And what, shall we say, would you do if you wanted to do an exposed bass solo, would you accept that? I would want it to be fixed.

This is one reason why I shy away from samples for emulating real instruments. These things are very serious issues as far as I'm concerned, and I hope they resolve them. This should not be happening. It would not happen on the real bass, so why should this happen with a virtual copy?

They really need to sort out these issues, while they may seem minor they will eventually get in the way of an idea or inspiration and ultimately ruin the moment. This sort of stuff is annoying, so I'm hoping they fix it now that it's been pointed out. It should not be happening because it doesn't happen on the real thing unless there is something seriously wrong with the instrument.

This is why I am waiting for Mokafix to release his Dark Lady bass guitar. I can assure you this would solve pretty much ALL of my bass problems. Physical modeling, when done correctly, gives you complete and utter control over the sound. When it comes to low end, I really want that control, I'm afraid samples can't give that to me. Trilian is a great instrument, once the bugs are ironed out, I'm sure. But samples are not my thing.

Omnisphere is a truly AMAZING instrument though. I might buy Trilian, but probably will stick to the synth basses. I really can't see how samples can faithfully reproduce the sound of a real bass. A synth bass, yes. A real bass, I'm not convinced yet. And I've heard the youtube videos, both the electric demos and the acoustic demo. They do sound amazing though. Eric really must have amazing sound design skills, his work is phenomenal. He is the reason why I bought Omnisphere. Now Omnisphere is basically a synth with a lot of superb sounds that truly inspire me. As I'm sure the synth basses in Trilian will create the same inspiration.

Yes, that's intentional.

The "All" versions of basses that have both muted and open fingering combine both playing techniques by switching from muted versions at lower velocities to standard playing technique at higher velocities.

You can hear how effective this can be when you listen to the Clean Fender being played in the "Features Overview" video demo. It sounds very natural to combine both techniques at once, like real bass players do. Someone like James Jamerson uses this type of a approach alot in those types of bass lines.

However, if you DON'T like this, we have indeed already provided a version without the mutes at the low velocity. Here's how to access that version:

1. Load the Clean Fender patch you want to use (like the Full Range version for example)

2. Go to the Edit page and open the Soundsource browser.

3. Instead of the "All" version of the sound, select the version of the soundsource without "All" in the name.

There you go! :-)

It does sound quite natural in a mix, but if you'd rather not have the mutes in there at all, just follow the steps above to load the version without the mutes and you'll find that a more natural transition. (Fingered to Fingered Legato, instead of Muted to Fingered legato)

BTW, the Legatos are indeed velocity sensitive. Some of the basses have more legato dynamics than others. The Studio Bass is one of the most extensive in that regard.

Hope that's useful! :-)

See above. It's not an error. :-)

It does happen on a real bass. You can go from a muted note to an open legato.

You are jumping to conclusions based on a few posts with questions. These are not problems, just users learning how to use the instrument. We've put an enormous amount of time into making it playable and customizable in lots of applications.

Listen to the solo bass example that Dr. Wu did....it's very exposed and you can hear how natural all the legato transitions work:

Glad you are enjoying it! :-)

Wow, that sounds awesome. I'm getting more interested in Trilian. I love bass sounds, and I can mix the bass sounds in Omnisphere, so it would serve me well.

Thanks a lot for your answer.
I just tried it and now it works the way I need it, fine :-)
I must confess I had completely overseen the Soundsource browser!
So the preset "Clean Fender Sustain ^All RR" is what I was searching for.

Now I still have a question, is there a reason why the Clean Fender Sustain and the Retro 60's Sustain do not have a p level?
The Bisonette and the Hardcore Rock have both a p level.

Best regards and thanks for your work

These are not problems, just users learning how to use the instrument.
Exactly! I hope we can have discussions about how to use the patches etc - (that's what forums are for) without people freaking out about the "inadequacies" of the instrument.

It is *samples* after all. If you want a real bass - get yourself a bass, amp, mic etc and play it! I personally *like* the mutes at low velocities and was playing around with it yesterday. If I didn't like it, I'd work around it by changing the velocities of the MIDI notes to make them a little louder (and now I see there is an even better solution). That wouldn't have ruined any creativity at all! (or the bass line for that matter)

If you feel creative - just play the part! You can worry about which patch to use later. I personally want to play around with the keyswitches next. Is that a "natural" way to play bass - of course not. It's a keyboard playing samples of bass sounds. If I want to sound "authentic" I need to pluck bass strings ;-) And by the way - physical modelling isn't plucking bass strings and moving air with 12" or 15" speakers either ;-)

PS - every time we bring up a perceived limit/problem with Trilian, Eric (and Dr Wu etc) has an instant solution. Not "I'll fix with the next release", but "this is how you do it" ;-) I still like Trilogy, so Trilian is just a quantum leap up - what's not to like!? ;-) I'm just glad we have these forums to help get our heads around getting the best out of Trilian.

Hi,
I don't have Trilian (yet?) but I want to chime in about your post.
When Omnisphere came out and some people complained about its openning up time and about certain "bugs", the first answers from the Spectrasonics team were that the problems were due to those users' systems. They said that many users around the world do not have the same problem and so it's a specific system's fault. On the other hand, on later releases these "user problems" got taken care of. If it wasn't for users saying what's on their mind, for good AND bad, those problems would not have gotten taken care of.
I am all for criticizing as long as it's to the point and not meaningless attacks on a personal level. In fact I'm sure Eric appreciates hearing about user complaints as it gives him the opportunity to make his instruments even better.

Sorry, have not had time to read through all posts.

Does anybody know if it is possible to install Steam on an external drive and use the same install of Steam on a Laptop and PC (I have installed the .dll on each system).

I have tried to do this but the installer wants me to install it on another folder within the original steam folder on the external drive. This means it takes double the time to load on 2 systems.
I managed to do this very thing with Kontact 4 ok.

Hopefully somebody has the answer, maybe even Eric if he is around.

Thanks

From the Reference Guide:

After installation, you can easily move the large STEAM directory containing all the sound files to a secondary drive if you wish to free up space on your original installation drive.

WINDOWS - MOVING THE STEAM DIRECTORY AFTER INSTALLATION

• Drag or copy the STEAM folder from your installation drive (C:\Program Files\Spectrasonics) to the hard drive location of your choice.

This can be another drive partition, a secondary internal drive or an external hard drive such as a Firewire or USB2 hard drive, etc.

• Next, right-click the SAGE folder in the new location to create a "Shortcut To STEAM".

• Next, copy the shortcut to C:\Program Files\Spectrasonics.

• Finally, make certain to remove the "Shortcut To " from the name (including removing the spaces), leaving the folder shortcut named STEAM

MAC OSX - MOVING THE STEAM DIRECTORY AFTER INSTALLATION

• Drag or copy the STEAM folder from your installation drive

(For Example: Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Spectrasonics)

to the hard drive location of your choice. This can be another drive partition, a secondary internal drive or an external hard drive such as a Firewire or USB2 hard drive, etc.

• Next, hold (Apple key and Option key) on the keyboard, click and drag the STEAM folder to the desktop to create an alias of the folder named STEAM.

• Next, move the STEAM alias from the desktop to Macintosh HD/Users/Username/Library/Application Support/Spectrasonics

Post

Thanks for the reply standalone, but unfortunately that won't work for me.

I don't want to move the directory to another drive. I would like the directory to be recognised from a laptop install and a PC install (only one in use at a time) with the Steam directory being on an external drive to start with.

When I open the PC VST, it tells me the directory can't be found and that a refresh of the browser might locate it. I can't find out how to refresh the browser (nothing I can find in the documentation refers to refreshing the browser).

I'll keep trying...

Post

The "refresh " button is right under the browser, under the tab where the patches' names appear as you scroll up and down. It has the shape of a circular arrow like when you want to suggest a clock-wise direction.
