Well here's my 2 cents,

Being the owner of Komplete 6 and soon to be ALL Spectrasonics tools (when they arrive) i will hopefully be able to give a detailed analysis on them all, however having used Stylus and Atmosphere in the past i found them extremely easy to use, all be it as secondary devices due to the fact they where really just sample players (with a few frilly add ons) but nice ones.

I find the NI stuff just as easy to use but then again i spend a LOT of time with them all and have become accustomed to the way they work, are layed out etc.

Lookibng at the new Spectrasonice stuff i am quite excited and am eagerly awaiting Trillian, Omnisphere and Stylus RMX to get stuck right into them and probably make a mess lol.

The OP is correct in his statement that NI lacks video tutorials for these devices (although there are full DVD instructional videos for Absynth and Kontakt - although now outdated) which is why i plan on creating some for Massive, FM8 and some of the others after my most recent project is complete.

With regards to companies making money from their software, that's the point right? and i have to say Spectrasonics have been more then generous to me, in fact so generous i almost passed out when they offered me what they did.

So many thanks Spectrasonics and NI for supplying some of the most useful, innovative and artistic tools on the market, i for one, love them :)

my upgrade from stylus to rmx was free
my upgrade from atmosphere to omni was i think 200 bucks
the best 200 bucks i have ever spent on any instrument

i will gladly buy every sound pack they release for omnisphere with great delight
so they can count on making money from me :D


if they add the steam engine to rmx
then rmx will be the hands down king of groove production :love:

Hopefully it will have a built in step sequencer, Pads for dragging samples to (with layering on the pads hopefully). With 10,000 or so sounds already it would make it much easier to use those sounds. Kit mode is great and its easy enough to trigger the sounds but pads and a step sequencer built in would be a natural progression for RMX IMO.

An assignable step sequencer per part would be great. The same way you have 8 arps with Omni e.t.c

Its a fantastic plug already (I have have it and really enjoy using it) but just a few more feature additions and it would be pretty complete IMO. 8)

Maybe specs have an RMX 3 being Steamed up for NAMM 2010 (I hope) :D

so far they have given away 3200 presets for free.....let us see if this is the case with omnisphere..... I personally doubt it...but we shall see.
And ironically it is that other synth that has so far charged for three sets of 'extra sounds', although they have also updated their factory library for free.....

I really do believe the best case scenario is an incorporation of both.. great factory library and the ability to import your own for those who like to do such things......although I am not really one of them per se, I would like spectrasonics to go that way with omnisphere. Ironically I just bought NI's Acoustic Refraction and if you like the unusual sounds of omnisphere, AR is a great complement to it and it would be nice to import those samples in omnisphere and mangle them with the STEAM engine, if one was so inclined.

Personally, I learned a lot from Eric's instructional videos for Omnisphere, which helped this old guitarist synthesize some very interesting patches in a short amount of time.

Alchemy, by contrast, didn't really make it as easy for me to learn how to build patches from the bottom up, nor did they provide many patches to start with. So for the time being, and for my current level of sound design knowledge, I've gotten nowhere near as much from my upgrade money (from Chameleon) as I have from Omnisphere (from Atmosphere).

I'm sure it's a powerful beast in it's own right, but it didn't offer me much of an entry point, nor anywhere near the amount of other sound designers' work to deconstruct and learn from. Maybe I'll get deeper into it someday if somebody designs some thoughful tutorial videos, but of course Spectrasonics did that for me virtually right out of the box.

I like both companies, but to claim one of their flagship products is not really a synthesizer is either to be transparently insincere or smugly uninformed, IMO. :D

BTW, if you take away the samples from any of these respected synths, they produce no sound at all.

What is this accusation based on exactly?

There are basically two types of business models in the musical software world: one is charging existing costumers for every update, the other is improving the product in order to increase the costumer base. You must only look at the way Stylus RMX has been developed during the years (all free updates), and how it has become an open format, to realize which side Spectrasonics is.

I am a Spectrasonics' costumer and I don't expect them to give me anything for free but, if anything, they have been extremely generous until now.

And they sell additional content for their products of course, just like two mega cool companies like U-He and Camel Audio. Why not?.
