strange but wonderful dream

I just woke up a few minutes ago. Last night I made an interesting loop which had a melismatic, catchy melody. It was very simple and soothing with a laid back tabla beat. So I took a melatonin sleeping aid (a natural hormone) and crawled into bed with the loop in repeat-mode. I was in a good mood because my American football team (Tennessee Titans) won their playoff game.

I had a kind of dream that I have been having my whole life. It's a flying dream where the ability to fly requires great effort on my part. Normally in these dreams I jump off of a canyon type vista and have to maintain the floating through concentration. This dream was similar but this time it was a vast lake with an incredible sunrise before me.

Here's the cool part: during the flight over the lake I encountered a group of strange trees growing out of an island not much bigger than the root system of the trees. They were like gnarly weeping willows and they were releasing tiny cotton-swab like flower petals into the wind. It was as if it was snowing in slow-motion, very peaceful and serene. And as I drifted past these trees there was a magic frog in one of the higher boughs singing and croaking MY MELODY! It was so cool. Oddly, I had to spin around on my back to see him because the tree was much taller than the height of my flight. This is the first time that has happened. Normally I have to keep my face and belly toward the ground.

It's odd how the mind constructs a scenario around the unconscious stimulus of a musical loop. There was more to the dream that I can't really organize in my mind enough to write about, but the end of it was just as I described above. I can't recall ever having a coincidence like this with music during sleep. I intend to try it again. I highly recommend it. Perhaps my story will plant the seed in your mind and you will get a cool dream, too.

God bless! :D

wowow ... nice and fascinating dream indeed, shane.

I almost never have phantasy-dreams - they´re always rather realistic and simple.
(well, the fact that i fall asleep being weeded prevents me from remembering many dreams)

I find it interesting that you had this kind of dream quite often, but this time it was a alternative version, with your own music included.

good luck in continuing your story, shane.

I've never had a dream like that as an adult.
I used to have dreams I could fly when I was a child.
could only fly around the room, though, never outside.
it's cool with the frog doing your loop.

I don't remeber any of my dreams at all

I rarely remember my dreams as an adult, too. But every once in a while I have a whopper of a tale like this one. Here is the loop for the curious among you. I'm going to work on this later today after I've woken up more. The concept of the strange trees and lake has inspired an idea. I wish I had a field recording of some real frogs and crickets for an intro section. That would be cool. Sort of like Santana's song The Eternal Caravan of Reincarnation but with electronic sounds...

Thank you sharing your beautiful dream Shane.
One of the things I truly love about this type of dream is how the feelings remain with you sometimes a day or even longer.
I get the sense this was a spiritual dream for you and something occurred in your consciousness which allowed you to overcome a feeling of obstacle or fear and you released it and are now free to advance to another level of your spiritual journey.
Just a few thoughts from dr.seamonkey.
Cherish and honor this experience.
peace
ps...that was an excellent football game. :)

Wonderfull story :)
I agree with Seamonkey's take on your dream (getting past an obstacle/moving to a higher level). Listening to your own music (ie listening to your soul's expression) was clearly helpfull to you. The frog reminds me of the archetypal serpent/dragon/etc that tells mankind deep truth's about the universe. The serpent usually dwells at The World Tree, which appears to have been in your dream also. The fact that you had him singing your melody seems like a great affirmation to you that YOU have things worth singing about....all very positive.

You flying effortlessly, coming across the World Tree while soaring over the "ocean/collective soul of the universe", and hearing the Serpent croaking YOUR music...fabulous!

It doesn't get much better, unless Britney Spears shows up as The Goddess and then....oh wait. I digress.

perhaps you could share the loop
it may aid thos of us with sleep disorders? :)

I just updated the loop with a slightly more interesting version. Subtle changes and twice the length. Same link as before:

Hey Shane, I've also had a flying that requires great concentration dream my whole life. It's always an awesome dream, whatever else happens. With the flying it's more like hovering or levitation - Slowly I can bring myself off the ground and get higher and higher, but if my concentration breaks then I fall back down. It's always exactly the same in that way - I don't know why.
Every day takes figuring out all over again how to f#ckin’ live.

Cool. Yeah, in these dreams that I have, there is a slight element of danger but I never have genuine fear. It's like a type of faith where I sense that I've been there before and so plunging ahead isn't such a big deal - and yes, now that you mention it, there is a willpower aspect to the initial take off for me too.

Ususlly I am very high in the air and there is always a tangible, natural setting. However, one time it was over a desert and I was really close to the ground, sort of skimming over it all. I still remember that one.

The only other recurring dream that I've had involves being chased by a vampire and I end up doing combat with him by throwing half-rotten apples at him. It probably qualifies as nightmare because that one does have a serious tinge to it. I had that one many times as a child but have not since adulthood.

vampire dreams i do have :(
not so much fighting but he/she is always either at my shoulder or out of sight in the shadows
whispering in a raspy evil voice
as i make out what he/she is saying i always wake up

very disturbing

then usually i hear the whispering for some time after i awake :o :(
this is down to my schizophrenia apparently,i need to eradicate the demon from my sleep to relieve my tension during the day.

thats what my shrink reckons anyway :?
