I smell fanboi.

It's the sort of stink you get from someone who gave up smoking / drinking / eating meat and who now wants to convert the whole frigging world too. Evangelism is sooooo AD 33. Or thereabouts. :)

The reasons for the relative lack of AU ports have been mentioned already. Also I suspect that a lot of devs have better things to do than deal with the ineveitable support tickets that flutter in every time there's an OSX update.

I quite like Macs - I use one at work occasionally. Possibly the only reason I don't own one is the Godawful smug attitude of some of the users.

Nice to see BONES on top form too!

While I will agree that Apple fanboys are arguably the most annoying species of fanboy in the world, I certainly didn't expect to see the thread devolve like this.

To be clear, my point is as follows:

Mac has roughly 10% of the market.
PCs have rougly 90% of the market.

HOWEVER...

Mac probably has more like 20-30% or more of the audio/video market.
PC probably has more like 80-70% of the audio/video market.

So I'm surprised that so many plugins aren't cross platform. 20 or 30% of the market is quite a good place to be, I wouldn't neglect the Windows market and focus on Mac if I were a developer, but I would certainly want to cater to them.

To be fair, I have more plugs than I need. I would venture that 90% of the PC only plugs out there are utter crap. I would love to get my hands on the other 10%.

How well does that AUVST program work? I looked into FXpansion's wrapper but decided it wasn't worth the money at the time.

The fact that u-he and DDMF are able to provide such high quality products in both formats as one man operations are proof that it can be done.

Regarding Mac versus PC: I just prefer the OS. The price I paid for a Mac Pro was right in line with what a comparable HP, Dell, or other machine would cost. I like Logic software, and that's really it.

While I think it's annoying when Mac fanboys get all uppity regarding their computers, when PC owners do it... it's downright hysterical. :hihi:

There you go, too stupid to know when he's being made fun of. [In a spirit of generosity, I prefer to think that than to believe he thought that was a worthwhile riposte.]

Even if it more than doubled your costs and your support workload? The Law of Diminishing Returns woudl rule it out for most small developers, I think.

Good for you. Apple simply don't make a computer to compete with the sort of machine I require, so they don't get a look in. Even so, I got my current PC for less than the cheapest MacBook, even though it will comprehensively outperform their best. They are fancy toys for people with too much money, not serious workstations.

I can see that reply took a lot of thought. If only I could come up with intelligent, witty replies like you. I'm now going to go pray to the micro soft gods in hope that I can make this dream a reality.

Funny how everyone just kinda keeps arguing after this comment...

Is this not the full solution to the problem!?

VSTAU is an Audio Unit adapter that allows VST plug-ins to be used in AU hosts (i.e. This application creates wrappers for your VST plug-ins that will make them available as Audio Units in programs like Logic Pro and GarageBand).

No, that adapter will only work with VST format plugins that were developed for Mac OS X. It won't work with plugins that were developed for Windows.

Yes, it is. But only for Mac VSTs. The OP seems to wonder why more PC VSTs can't be AUs ie. he's asking for more cross-compatibility between the two operating systems more than anything.

The true answer has already been given: more people use PCs so more people make VST plug-ins. I find it hard to believe that Mac users *really* have trouble finding comparable plug-ins on their OS, it's just that it'll probably cost more money (a lot of excellent freeware plug-ins for Win out there while for Mac you always hear the same two mentioned - Zoyd and Automat - there are so few that even me as a non-Mac user know their names  ) and be less quirky than the PC counterparts.

One reason I could never go Mac (or at least fully Mac) at any point is the wealth of PC-only plug-ins that make my life easier and lovelier. :D Could I really leave ugo, dlm, bootsie, KX, the Elektrosound pack and (most importantly) my beloved FL Studio behind? Not a chance.

I suppose that's the same for Mac users that adore Logic. They can never leave that platform.

You use Orion and synthedit plugs but you need a "serious" workstation? Yer cheesy as effe, mai brotha....A dual quad-core i7 machine isn't fast enough for you? are you compensating for something else?

Exactly... there is not one commercial studio that doesn't have a Mac.

Are there not dual quad-core i7 Windows machines?

Just teasing.

What's the point of AU anyway? Although I seriously dig my new Macbook, I'm sort of new in the Apple camp, and I can't figure out why I should use AUs. Apart if you're a Logic user, is there any reason why to go AU?

No troll- or fishbait. Genuinely curious.

No real benefits, but it's the format that Apple supports.
