Remember when all this music was supposed to be a good thing, and how the mp3 was forever going to revolutionize and democratize music? Blog post right here wonders why there's a ton of new music every day on download sites like iTunes and Beatport, even though nobody seems to care...

it just seems that the guy needs to take a break.
i think its very nice that so many sounds are released, and surely there need to be people that wade through all this and pick out what they like. i thought that was the job of these internet label guys and djs.
and to quick listen through all of the monthly new releases on the site he mentioned takes about an hour at best. and its fun. 5 milliards of people like music and sometimes they want to listen to new sounds, so its ok there is more of it. but i can see that it also may be overwhelming when tired.

Yes! Exactly!

There was always way more music than what people heard on the radio or saw in record shops.

The A&R people at the record companies used to wade through mountains of demos and dicard most of it.

Now, instead of being discarded it is all up on the internet. And there is a lot more of it. And most likely a whole lot of it is terrible.
Like the guy I once saw at a music shop trying out guitars. The guy could barely play. He has to stop for a few seconds to change to the next chord.
But he was talking about his band going into the studio to record an album.
Hopefully he wasn't the guitarist.

There is no way this is democratising. It just clogs things up to the point where peole stop trying to find the good stuff.

I think people want to listen to music, not turn finding things they like into a job.

This kind of discourages me from ever actually attempting to sell the CD I've been working on for the last couple of years, but I'll still try anyways. I have given everything else away for free though.

In the end, this all sounds a little more like socialism than democracy.

He does have a point, 1993 funnily enough was when I started releasing tracks and up until 2001 it was pretty much a given... every track I realeased I could at least pay my rent with and eat.

But then DJ's started playing CD's instead of vinyl so whereas before if you wanted to spin my tune you had to buy the vinyl.... then it became just a download and burn away... now it's a freebee found on the internet for just about any torrent upload site.

Oh well, 2 years ago I gave up and got a proper job which allowed me to love my music again and do it for pleasure rather than money.

I'd rather have a cluster f*ck of dodgy music than be spoon-fed the 'taste' of some coked-up A&R chimp. I'm old enough to remember how shyte it was to have a few dominant companies that dictated what was worthy and what was not.
eh?

amen.

I kinda hate to say it, but I don't think it's the amount of music out there that's the problem, I think it's the lack of people willing to pay for it.

You can call it democratization or liberation but the simple econonmic fact is that the money these days is in media distribution not media creation.

There's something to be said for quality control and filters. The internet just needs more of those. For example, I'm on the site staff of OC ReMix (www.ocremix.org) which hosts only one type of music (video game remixes.) Of course, a video game remix or arrangement can be in many genres, ranging from jazz to orchestral to hillbilly to funk to trance, etc. But we have very strict standards. All the music is free, and anyone can submit a track to be hosted and promoted on the site, but we reject at least 90% of what gets submitted to us. Thus when you hear something on our front page you know it's going to be good.

Totally agree. The vast majority won't even make a donation, however small, for music they download and listen to.

Commercial music is going to go away, or at least change a whole lot. The industry likes to blame piracy, but fact of the matter is that there are way, way too many who knows how to make music for it to become anything but a commodity.

The music industry has depended on maintaining a 2-way artificial scarcity, but thanks to the Internet and the low cost tools the barrier is going away. For better or worse, the flood gates are opening.

I think the big time super star artist scene will move over to a sponsorship model similar to that of athletes. If albums are sponsored, piracy become a non-issue too, the sponsor will probably even pay extra to get the network effect going.
