I just moved to Mac and am trying to get to grips with which DAW I should look at. I come from the Sonar world and am also currently trying out Reaper for Mac. In looking at Logic- it seems to be a good fit for me. My dilemna is which one to get.

I read a review saying Express is not a dumbed down version of Studio- but that it doesn't come with all the extra's. I like Mainstage 2 but don't know if it handles 3rd party VSTi/AUi's (will read the manual on it shortly). Besides that- I already have Komplete 5 and Dimension Pro- it seems that the included instruments in Logic duplicate a lot if not all of what I already have. Does any one have guidance- excluding Mainstage 2- will Express paired with Komplete give most of everything that Studio has (for an extra 250- I could spend that on something else).

Alternatively, should I consider a different DAW (I like the $250 pricetag for Express)?

handles 3rd party fine, way less built in istruments and FX tho, and no side programs like waveburner or mainstage or something else that comes in the studio package

Cubase essential 5 : 150 €

it make everything unless the sidechain.

Logic is the way to go on Mac. I recommend getting Express and then upgrading to Logic Studio / Pro later on. It's less money up front and there's nothing to lose from just getting Express first.

Logic Express is $199. Both the Pro and Express versions are not compatible with the VST format, just AU. AU is the standard on OS X and Cubase doesn't support it, only the VST format.

Thanks for the response. I think I am fine with AU only (I see that VST is supported by Reaper). I will hit up my wife for Express and take the plunge. In reading about Mainstage 2- it seems like a good tool- but still not mature enough (at least by the bugs posted on the Apple forum). I guess Express is the way to go and then upgrade to Studio 10 next year.

the price curve isn't as steep as it used to be - there's less reason not to go with Logic Pro to begin with if you're feeling a little adventurous. That said, Logic Express is much more full fledged now than it was in the olden days when Pro was -900

for the the same,

test it first with Logic Express.

If it deserve your needs, you could upgrade to Logic Studio later, without paying more instead of buying the Studio version first.

Yep, do like they say. Simply get Express first.

Unless you want to utilize some of the (at least for us europeans) very cheap Studio prices on Ebay.

Is there an option to try before buy? Express is the way to go but i don't think that apple will update Logic Pro(10) soon.(or for the next 2-3 years)

There is no demo, but you can also upgrade the Express 9 to Studio/Pro 9 if you like. Or, even sell it if you for some reason hate it.

The sequencer itself is basically the same in both.

There was one in the Market Place just today.
There was one on ebay for £46 as well.

Just keep looking around.

It was mine that was in the Market place
I personally didn't like logic the audio editing was really bad imo
I much prefer cubase
but each to there own

What gaps do you see in Logic that Cubase addresses for audio editing?
Just curious. Also is it hunky-dorey to resell express? Can a buyer upgrade to studio?

Just moved to mac- Logic Studio or Express?
