Whats the best way to widen a pad sound which is already in stereo.

Is it better to just use chorus or just use delay?

for example, a pad using synth1 is already in stereo, but to bring it out even more, I was wondering what is the best solution, and if possible, which free plugin can do the job.

So if pan the sound hard left and the copy of it hard right,
how much delay time should I add on one of the channels?

JUST panning it left and right will make it sound dead centre again. Try detuning one slightly and tuning the other one up slightly to get them out of sync with each other.

What host are you using? I think most hosts have a suitable plugin for widening your stereo image.

Otherwise check the database here for free Imaging/Panning/Spatial plugins.

Are you trying to do this live or in post-production? If you are mixing a recorded stereo track, you could try several plug-ins. Two free ones with interesting results are the Voxengo Stereo Touch (http://www.voxengo.com/product/stereotouch/ (http://www.voxengo.com/product/stereotouch/)) and the Vesco FX Free Outsider Phase plugin (http://www.vescofx.com/vfxFreeOutsider (http://www.vescofx.com/vfxFreeOutsider))

mid/side processing is pretty handy here as the side channel contains the stereo part of the signal (mid being equivalent to the mono part)

shameless plug : whiteLABEL sideFIRE
compressor, distortion and eq on just the side-channel coupled with m/s offset delay makes for some pretty hefty widenings - only £15 full version ... freebie 'lite' version

or you might wanna mess with TEV (click my sig) - turn the reverb and delay off, and use just the enhancer which is based round a compander on the side channel (also with m/s offset) ... ymmv

hi
im trying to widen the synths from the vst's in the mixing group before mixdown, so that it fills up the space a bit more.

In most of the tracks im going through, there are usually more than 3 or 4 different main synth sounds in the mix, is it best to only widen one or two of them, and leave the rest panned slightly to left or right?

The quick answer to this is to experiment; pan things left, right, middle, front, back; what do YOU think, as you are the best judge

You can try using PSP Stereo Enchancer and different Reverb parameters, you can also try widening the reverb itself.

Duplicating a Stereo Track and panning it hard left and hard right WILL NOT do anything but double the volume and create "big mono" which achieves nothing.

My approach to this problem would be to duplicate the pad first and make the original track MONO, panned center and cut everything up to about 500Hz, so it doesn't interfere with your low sounds. After doing so, I would take the second track which I would make MONO as well, after that I would send it to a Stereo Chorus/Delay/Reverb Buss and return the effects in Stereo, adjusting the LEFT and RIGHT in the stereo field according to taste and allowing more control and width.
