I've had the inverse of this happen. I was working with a dev on an expander UI. Did a whole lot of work and he stopped responding to emails. The vst never was released to my knowledge

No worry, it wasn't like I was getting paid, but I would have liked to see the project completed. Where you paying Scott? Not that if you weren't that's an excuse to sever all contact mid project, but that might have been part of it. It's one thing to have a fun non paying gig, but a pain in the ass non paying gig... that's one you might quit.

Here's what I've found from doing work on "spec." It's often the hardest work to do. I don't know why but when something is free... there seems to be no incentive to keep things constrained to any sort of time budget. I used to do a lot of pro bono work and it was hands down the most frustrating work to do. When another iteration is costing you nothing, there's no reason not to right? It's fun seeing all a designer can do! DANCE FOR ME BOY!

The moral of my story (again, I'm not sure if it applies to the OP and Scott Kane) is even if no money is changing hands, there should be a contract and production schedule just like a real project. Get it all hammered out in advance to misunderstandings. Also, if you're not paying, you should pay with a high degree of freedom. There's nothing worse than having to become someone's design puppet when no money is changing hands. When I did the expander it was super fun because I got some direction from the dev and then go to do anything I want. I thought the UI came out looking pretty good and I felt like a partner, not a servant.

Zerocrossing,

Scott was paid. I was going to pay him the remaining half, but he has disappeared (I thought I wrote this on the 1st part of this thread).

He went to a wedding and has disappeared. I hope he is ok and in good health.

However, a lot of time has now passed and I need this done.

Ah, that's why I said, "...this my not apply." I guess it doesn't. I hope he's OK to, but if he is I'd cut him loose. In today's world of telecommunications there's no reason to not pop off an email or phone call explaining you're going dark.

I did a GUI for free and then sent it to them. Instead of the thank you email you expected you get a file saying can you do it this way with a jpeg all cropped in nice with psd

and then do this and this and this get rid of that and that and that...sort makes one want to quite and most likely I should have but I'm dumb, I just stopped making GUI's for people. Done a few since but only because I wanted to, something I sought out.

Are you available for hire (assuming you ever want to do a skin again)? Do you have samples of your work? Since I got possibly burned on this one, anyone else I do business with will have to agree to a schedule and a deadline.

OK, I just looked at the quality of your work and it is amazingly good.

How much for your slider and knob templates. I LOVE your gear background graphics. I may try and do something similar in my 3D animation program, but if I cannot, let me know if I can hire you to just do the background of the skin?

Well, as soon as possible is always a good answer. However, I am very flexible, but I really want to get this done so I can begin marketing it.

I already have the synth done. I am working on expansion packs and presets right now.

ZeroCrossing, your comments and observations about working for spec mirror my own experiences all the way! I know it doesn't pertain to this scenerio between Mike and Scott, but the picture you painted about the "for spec" process has been true for me, virtually without exception!

We all have to do some "for spec" projects when we're in our early days, or when a special project comes along. But most eventually find it's better to pass on these - not due to the money at hand, but for the lack of professional respect that often seems to result. Little or no vested interest leads to potential abuse of requests (indeed - dance! designer, dance!). Oh well, another topic for another thread...but I sure agree with your comments!

And for the record Mike, I didn't HATE the Monstrous UI! I thought it was cool for the tone of the project! But yes, SuperCore appears to deserve the finesse of a pro, or at least advanced designer's hand!

Then again, maybe this could be made into a contest in some way! I don't know all the details of creating skins for plug-ins, just a thought since the available designer pool seems to be somewhat limited at the moment!? Just thinking outloud!
