I use Cubase 4.5, Ableton Intro and the more than likely Studio One soon, the Demo has been pretty good stability wise for me on XP, apart from an issue with a plug in that decided to cause a brief squeek.. its so slick

but then it does depend on what your going to be doing .. grouping and sending is so easy ..

for me an upgrade to C5 or S1.

True, but IMO the OP would be better off getting this....

... which has a lot more features than studioOne has and can be upgraded to v6 when it's out for the same price as v5.

I am going to take the unconvetional choise of Synapse's Orion.

Otherwise I think Renoise and Reaper are both very much worth checking out.

The problem with Orion is that it won;t be very good for taking anything but rendered audio into Logic, as it's major strengths are the proprietary generators and effects. Worse still, after a few weeks working with such high quality stuff and incredible ease of use, he won;t want to use Logic any more, so it's probably best that he finds something that doesn't really threaten the established order.

I hope Ben[KVR] introduces a word filter onto KVR that turns "best" into something silly like "dessert spoon" or "wibble".

It really needs to be taken out of the vocabulary here.

But back to reality Cubase is the bestest. No wait, Sonar is teh bestest. Well, it's one of those two. Or it might be Pro Tools. No wait, it IS Pro Tools. Unless you have Logic.

My best host is Orion.. and now I am trying new one..
Samplitue 11 seems good and, reaper too..(I tryed just one day)
And I found MULAB yesterday

If you want low cost, I recomend MULAB
But MULAB has some problum at Reaktor's some ensembles

Like someone else said, there's no "best" DAW, but I use Sonar Studio v7, and it works great for me.

You said your price range is around $150, and it is a lot more than that. You can get the Sonar Home Studio for about $99.

I would love to upgrade to the 8.5 Producer version but no $$ right now.

what's best for me:

a host that supports plugins with:
midi and audio sequencing
a human interface that needs no keystrokes (optional only) and isn't menu-driven for any operation/manipulation of sound events.
can have multiple instances running on the same platform without crashing.

+ the other stuff I'm too lazy to type.

What is the best DAW for Windows?
