Was going to bump this thread but figured the comparisons were from much older versions.

If I supply some MIDI files can we get side by side comparisons from owners of either one or the other?
Is this a good idea or are opinions, experiences and views enough?

I don't own either so my opinions are unbiased.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks all.

Yep it's a good idea, but it will only be a partial test, because it's not possible to compare live playing offline.
You can't always get what you waaaant...

MIDI files are not going to represent the instruments well enough since each plays completely different. Also, there is a much larger variety of sounds in Pianoteq so how do you decide which sounds to compare?

It may be fun to compare, but not very accurate.

I see what you mean guys..

Ok well I'm up for anything, experiences or whatever, and if you have both pianos, audio examples.

Personally I'm curious to know which one has a more realistic Grand Piano, but thats just me.

Let see what happens..

No question which one is more realistic ;)

are there not demo versions?

Of course there is. Define "realistic".

It was also mentioned that somebody wanted the most "realistic grand piano". That's pretty vague. It would be impossible to define.

Now, there are certain elements to what a real piano does and how everything reacts to the playing. But it depends on what kind of sound you are looking for and which factors matter to you.

I'm on that now ;)..

I know that some say PT is better because there are so many different modules, I was under the impression that True Pianos only had a grand model. At 1st glance, it looks like there are several different 'modules' that come with it (Saphire, Emerald, Diamond and Amber).

Looking into this further........

All the modules that come with TP are grand pianos. No uprights. Pianoteq has many different types of pianos(but again, no uprights though unfortunately, though you can get kind of close).

And not just pianos ;)

Definitely. Especially with the add-on packs.

Pianoteq plays nicely and as it's a model, it has very true simulation of piano behaviour, like very realistic string resonance. But unfortunately, the basic sound timbre of Pianoteq only remotely resembles a piano.
TruePianos seems to be based on samples and as such it sounds much more closer to how pianos sound, but on the other hand things like string resonance are done poorly in it.
So they are both unperfect, you have to decide what characteristics of pianos are more important to you to choose between them.

Did you see the Cinematique Instruments piano? There aren't enough sampled velocity levels for it to sound or feel as realistic other collections but it's charming in its own way, not to mention cheap!

Has anyone tried layering the two?

Are you listening to the latest version with a good sound system and your velocity settings adjusted? You may be hearing the Detuned unisons as slightly strong in some presets. Try reducing them to something around 0.11 and then gradually moving the setting to the right. If you can't find a very, very good sound, something is wrong.

I posted a little more about reducing the Unison detuning here (because it extends the decay):
