just pondering the JV1080 and other older hardware units, and it's got me thinking... are there any available sample libraries out there [wav or otherwise] that pride themselves on their efficiency, like the older modules? Does anyone sell or distribute an instrument sample library that comes in under 4Mb, for example?... how's about 8Mb, or 16Mb?
I mean, back when it was just us and incredibly expensive 2Mb RAM, we'd map samples sparingly, figuring out when the keyranges' pitch started to affect the sound a little too much... absolute minimums when it came to loop points or zero crossings... and we'd map filter cutoff to velocity and work the absolute out of the source material.
Of course, the JV1080 or the EMU Proteus or equivalent would never stand up against Kontakt, Sampletank and the likes.. but quick loads and minimal memory requirements still stand.. look at Ravity or Hypersonic - both valued for their strengths, speed and general hardware-like bonhomie...
The reason for all this is that - just for the hell of it, really - I'm going to try and stack out the MPC with some multisamples that don't go boom-tchick-ssss or similar. I don't need to - there's plenty of Compactflash at the front, and a laptop with a hundred gigs ready next to it... consider it a labor of love, a history lesson in efficiency and some self-directed learning in how to sample. I mean, really sample.. enforced limits.
Anyone ever tried something similar [recently, obviously.. I know you were all doing it 15 years ago]
). Unfortunately I can't use or rebuild it on my current setup because it relied on the filter cutoff effect you mentioned but's it's not a lost art for me...
