How to make that sound...

Hi guys,

I'm trying to do a bootleg of Chris lake & Sebstien Leger - Aqualight for a party I'm playing at, and I need some help recreating the main synth line.

For those wondering, yes I have tried, and I have an inkling that it's a saw and a square, and I do know that it's probably from two oscillators, as I came off a Nord Lead 3.

I have the following synth at my disposal :

FxPansion Synth Squad
NI FM8
PPG Waves v2
Waldorf Blofeld (there are 3 OSC's on this one)
Ableton Built-Ins

So advice on how to recreate it on any of these would be appreciated.

Ps : I'va also heard the same sound from one of the Vengance Sample Packs, but this is a sample, and I've stried it and doesn't sound the same with the riff.

Surely someone can help?

maybe for the benefit of people who don't the song, you could post a link to the sound you're after?

Whoops sorry I knew I forgot to do something.

Yes thats the one :) Thanks!

My guess would be 3OSC's all SQAURES.

OSC 1 = 0
OSC 2 = +12
OSC 3 = +16

Use a really tight FILTER ENV

A = 0
D = 20
S = 0
R = 0

Set your CUTOFF to about 25% and the ENV AMOUNT to about 50%. Also add about 20% RESONANCE.

You'll also want a fair bit of RELEASE on the AMP ENV for when then sound opens up.

Put a touch of delay on as well for a nace background ambiance.

You want to also follow the melody with an octave higher as well so to get the higher notes in.

You should end up with something like this:

Hope that helps :)

Ok, I've gotten closer with this sound, but I'm still not entierly sure.

After reading the Underworld - Cowgirl thread about Nord Lead sounds, I tried DiscoDSP's Discovery synth, and discovered it's two saw osc's with one detuned +16 semitones up, but for some reason it still doesn't sound right. The MIDI for the lead line is on nonstop2k's MIDI resource page. So anymore advice is much appreciated.

I made this in NI's Massive.

What synths are you running? Are you using Logic?

:hihi:

I would imagine just about any of those could do it.

Yes any of those can. But I tell you now, the Blofeld is hardly the fattest synth on the list. It's actually quite wimpy imo. But is very versatile and if the sound doesn't rely on being fat, than it sounds awesome.

Not using Logic (want to but can't afford any Mac) But I listed the synths I am using, and I'm sure they are capable. Thanks for your help soul_junkie

yeah sorry missed that you'd posted your synths.

Well I'm not really sure then. I now my instructions are pretty spot on as I've followed them (as if I was you) and made the sound on a few more synths (ES2 & Predator)

Can you maybe post an example of what you've got so far and maybe I'll be able to tell you where your going wrong.

just to be clear, I was laughing at soul junkie for missing your list of synths.
Synth Squad is probably one of the best synths possible for what you want given people's reactions and its spec's.

I was just reading what I wrote back and I may have discovered where you're going wrong....

you need 3 OSC's, not 2 (as they are combing in to play a major chord. You also need Square Waves, not Saw's.

maybe that's where the problem lies?

I tried a few different patches, with a few diff synths, with DiscoDSP's Discovery being the closest as it is a Nord Lead emulation, but I achieved quite good results with strobe and Cypher.

http://www.mediafire.com/?tyittjzlyoz

0 - 7.5 Secs = Strobe using 2 Unison OSC trick.
7.5 - 15 Secs = Cypher using two SQU OSCs and a sub Tri ( I tried with 3 SQU's, but that didn't seem quite right with Cypher. Mabey this works in Massive I don't know.)
15 - 22.5 secs = Cypher the same as before, except I did an interesting trick. As well as modding the filter with the env, I set it so the env also move the pulse from 50 to SAW.

BTW, you're heaps good with sound design, if I left a list with links, is it possible that you could help me with a few others?
