The one in Cool Edit at least use FFT as there is a FFT setting.
I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing, but after restoring a few hundred records manually in Audition (3 is the best for this), I eventually learned to eliminate or reduce distortion, sibilance and, of course clicks/pops. They all look very similar in spectral view.
The tool I am speaking about is called Clip Restoration in CEP 2.

Wouldn't be a simple approach to reversion of a killed audio track level reduction followed by expansion? I know, there should be something more on top of that (transient treatment whatsoever). But basically this somehow should be the key to it, shouldn't it?

My guess is also that it uses upward expansion.
Also described by Bob Katz as a way to restore lost dynamics.

Nope, evry developer has his "Voodoo", reveal the magic is giving away the "magic".
I hope hope you understand, did anyone asks Waves how they programmed there plugins.. no.
As long if the plugin does what you expect it todo, nothings matter.
Only you, the enduser mathers!

Terry.

Absolutely no problem with that, of course.
As I already said, it's a cool plug and I like what it does, that's the important thing.
Just being curious...
