Short of getting your hands on a 303 or SH101, I'd suggest Audiorealism's ABL2 (a very good 303 emulation)

You could use the in-built distortion or a 3rd party effect like 'Camel Crusher' (which is free) and available here:

Get your acid line going then just fiddle around with the accent/Mod/Decay settings till you get the vibe you're after. The only essential would be lots of resonance.

Most acid lines are created more by feel through the notation and the vibe of the track you're working on rather than a set of general rules, but with those tools you should have no probs getting the vibe you're after (and a million others as well

)

I already have camel crusher. I don't have ABL tho. Can this sound be done with another subtractive vst (I prefer Toxic 4), or is it the unique filters of the 303/ABL that give it that sound?

Yeah pretty much every synth can get an acid sound happening fairly convincingly, I just find the ease-of-use of the ABL2 to be great for getting straight to the point.

The general philosophy is SAW WAVE + LP FILTER (with lots of resonance). Then just adjust the CUTOFF and ENV AMT to taste. Use the CUTOFF to sweep up and down and create the 'movement'

here's a very quick example of an acid bass made in MASSIVE, then with Camel Crusher added.

You will need a post filter to muffle the resonance and add more "twisting" filters. Once you have your 303-ish sound, add something like the Noisebud filter with some crazy LFO settings on the reso and milder ones on your cutoff to get that mangled sound he's using. u-he's Runciter is good too for that acidic nastiness, and follow it up with a bassy distortion, maybe tube or overdrive.
