Mike Senior's (excellent) "Classic Compressors" piece in the September issue of SOS quotes Geoff Emerick: "Just the sound of the amplifier, even if you didn't do any limiting, just added a certain presence"...Robert McCormick wrote:Not to mention that the Fairchilds are loaded with about 20 tubes and 7 transformers.

yes i believe one of the qualities the fairchild is famous for is it's ability to add a unique air to vocal tracks

The saga Antress vs rest of the world continue
Well, hopefully we can stop this taking over the world thing, before it really begins. You can't seriously compare the IK version to the "Antress version".
I didn't even take the time to read through the whole thread,
but if this is the topic, I don't even have to.
(C'mon antress guys, and I'm sure there are a couple of y'all...)
You better rely on some quality stuff.
Just because it is free, and many people use it,... doesn't mean that it is good.
Greetings,
Rodge

I'm amazed at what T-Racks 3 can do for my Guitar stuff - worth every penny. And the Vintage 670 looks so kewl too. I used T-Racks 1 for a long time and when 3 came out I grabbed it as I was a T-Racks believer. I'll give Antress a shot this weekend though. Some free stuff (like Bootsy's, LePou's, Acmebargig's, Nick Crow's, etc) is top notch!
Now the proud owner of an avid 11 Rack, Running Pro Tools 10.3.3 - for me it's heaven!

...you haven't even tried to listen because you assumes that free=bad and payware=best...and this to me seems rather silly...but since you have golden ears you might help us to understand how to distinguish easily the "crap plugin" from the "quality plugin"...show us that what you claim is true...otherwise why should we believe your words???

Why not?rodgetkfp wrote:You can't seriously compare the IK version to the "Antress version"
That's actually the only meaningful comparison I can make - as I've said (twice) before, I've never used a real Fairchild so I can't possibly compare either of them to the original.
How convenient...(!)rodgetkfp wrote:I didn't even take the time to read through the whole thread,

No, of course not. And I don't think any reasonable person would suggest that. But, by the same token, the fact that something is expensive does not guarantee that it is any good. It seems pretty obvious - to me, anyway - that the relationship between price and quality in plugins (and audio software generally I would suggest) is far from straightforward.rodgetkfp wrote:Just because it is free, and many people use it,... doesn't mean that it is good

No, that's not my statement.
I'm just saying that if it is labelled with T-RACKS (v.3),
it would be very strange if IK Multimedia stuff wouldn't be better
(yes, simply better) than Antress stuff.
IK takes the time to create some really good plugins
(and this process really takes some time).
Antress releases 4 plugins every month, which all are not of high quality.
And by the way, they (in my personal oppinion) all sound like s**t.
Well, and compared to the original gear they sound even worse than s**t.
Go, and rent some gear
(in this case a Fairchild, because you coudn't buy one anyway,if you rely on Antress stuff)
And again, I'm not saying freeware is automatically worse than payware.
I use some freeware stuff as well.
The only thing positive, I have to say about Antress stuff
is that they have really well looking GUIs and they are free...

LONG ANSWER:
...to be precise, the only system to model "fairly accurate" an electronic non linear circuit is to solve recursively differential equations, like i do using Spice engine...and if you do that forget real time

"Here are a drum loop processed by the two compressors, setting them (by ear and not looking the knobs...)to match the sound and to obtain around 5-6dB of gain reduction ..."
long answer:
"...setting them (by ear and not looking the knobs...)"
Well, this is completely unserious from the beginning.
If we have (no.) A processed by (e.g.) 5,2dB of gain reduction,
and (no.) B processed by (e.g.) 5,7dB of gain reduction,
then you can't seriously compare them.
We all know how "much" different
something can sound when just 0,5dB of more or less
gain reduction is used (even while using the same compressor).
and finally the short answer:
I simply don't like the sound of Antress plugins.

oooouch!!!!...what a golden ears!!! ...strange however that you can hear a subtle difference of 0.5 dB of gain reduction (that is about the precision of my test...) even if it is obtained with the same compressor and you can't say to us what is what....could be simple for you, especially because you don't like the sound of antress plugins (so you should at least be capable of recognize them...rodgetkfp wrote:
