Cakewalk are at the moment allowing free public downloads of some older programs, including the excellent multitimbral soundfont player SFZ+. Scroll well down on the following page to see it among the other "gift" programs:

The SFZ+ download includes VSTi and DXi versions.

Remember, sfz+ doesn't support the sfz format... which sucks (the lack of support, not the format - which rocks btw). But it does support the giga format, and soundfonts.

I don't think Cakewalks free version has support for gig. I think it was just a temporary support in a beta-version and later got removed for licensing issues or something like that.

You're quite right-
just tried it and it doesn't support gig.
It also doesn't appear to load anything.
I tried loading a dozen different soundfonts and all I got was 'insufficient memory available'.
f**k you!
I have 4GB!!!

I recommend the free sfz player over this any day.

I wouldn't. I don't know what's wrong with your outfit, but I am playing soundfonts in multitimbral fashion with that downloaded file, on 4 gigs in XP. Otherwise, I would not have recommended the download.

Who in God's name ever thought it would support Giga files?

Pull up your socks, lad, and see if you can borrow a civil tongue from somewhere.

Guess you tried that in a hurry... :D Before you load a file you have to select the proper "mode"... try "PR16" and load any sf2 file. It did the trick for me!

Thanks Larry for this great hint... :tu:

I'm looking for a good free soundfont player for quite a while and now it's here!

I will go to check that out more closely now!

The developer. Because the original beta-test version did, although the ability was deprecated in the full version, unless you bought it during the beta-test period. At least one person here has had their 'rare' version in the MarketPlace here, and the idea that it existed at some point still circulates...

...again a piece of studio software... SFZ+ glitches when you switch sounds via midi program changes while playing...

I wonder when virtual instrument makers start to care for live players and create stuff that is bullet proof...

Look at Proteus and Emulator software, it's quite dated, most sound libraries are vintage but you can switch sounds without glitches - it even behaves perfect on sound changes in the slot you're playing...

It's sad, but most VSTi are not glitch free in live uses and you need a lot of hosting tricks then to hide glitches... :( ...that said: HW does often not much better in this regard - at least when it comes to switching effect chains... one rare exception from this is Virus Ti with OS 3.x in multimode... in single mode it does the trick since I know about this machine.
