Hi Dennis nice app, i did the pre-order 1 week ago and i can't wait to the final release (of this exile's project  ).

F.R: is it hard to do a lite version with just the loopers and an output from each one?
i'd love that one :D

B.R: -when you assing a controller to the A/B page button in the input Fx, the Fx knobs desappear.
-the CPU use of vocoder is huge( 68% in my E8400 3.0Ghz core2 :o )

Post

Well for my set up the Gui is way too large. What to do?

Thanks! :)

What exactly do you mean? Just the loopers and the record button and nothing more? Yes, that's entirely possible! Perhaps a good idea.

Really?? Disappearing buttons are not that good  Sorry, noted. Thanks!
The vocoder has some denormal issues sometimes, i noticed this myself - will be fixed soon hopefully :)

Mhh.. you can safely ignore 20% of the bottom in that case. The only thing that is going to be hard then is loading drumsounds :? Can't you just set up a higher screen resolution?

Are you sending out links to PFL customers, or is it just a demo at the moment?

It's just a demo at the moment but by the weekend it should have the full version ready - and this one will be "mailed out" then :)

I've been messing around with LM, mostly just trying to do some live audio recording. The more I use it, the more impressed I am. (And the more I get used to anticipating how to get my recordings to start/stop on time. And the more it highlights my sloppy timing ) I really love the interface too. You're really on to something very cool here, Dennis.

I've got a few questions and suggestions for you...

Questions:
- What happens when you've filled up all 8 audio tracks, haven't mixed down, and you press record again? What determines the length of that re-record? It's probably just me but the start/stop seems harder to anticipate at this point.

- Are the upper level of buttons in the input effects section for upcoming features or do they already serve a purpose?

- What is the signal flow and control arrangement for the filter listed in the keyboard effects section? It appears that there is no keyboard control over it and clicking the word "filter" does nothing (unlike with the other KB effects). However, turning the input effects LP/HP knobs turns it on/off.

- I am correct in assuming that the kit load/save function hasn't been implemented yet? (There are no controls displayed, only spots where they would go.)

- Is there anything that determines the length of the mixdown beyond however long the button is enabled? (I ask because I tried doing a four bar mixdown at one point and ended up with a much smaller piece, and I'm not sure why.)

Feature suggestions:
- Re-record/overwrite the current track without moving to the next one.
- A delete button per audio track so you can quickly get rid of the recording.
- Clear all recordings button (for a quick restart).
- A button to enable all channels for effects processing/recording, so you don't have to enable them all individually.
- Option for setting the length of the recording in advance. When enabled, recording starts on the 1 and stops accordingly, so the loop is always in time.
- A way to erase single beats/parts in the drum machine. If you hit the wrong note, or at the wrong time, it seems that you've got to clear the whole sequence and start over.
- Option to set the number of bars for the drum machine, so you can have a rhythm longer than four beats.

Thanks, Ugo! :)

Yes, that Recordbutton thing is already on my todo-list labeled as "improve!" :D
(So that you can just click right on time - no "slightly" before and stuff like that ;)) For now, its just like this so that you won't "miss a beat" so to say.

When you've filled all 8 Channels and record again the latest Channel (8) will be overwritten once you're done.
- Are the upper level of buttons in the input effects section for upcoming features or do they already serve a purpose?
They're just there for upcoming features, yes. I plan to add a detailed readout of frequencies/settings and the like.
- What is the signal flow and control arrangement for the filter listed in the keyboard effects section? It appears that there is no keyboard control over it and clicking the word "filter" does nothing (unlike with the other KB effects). However, turning the input effects LP/HP knobs turns it on/off.
That's one thing i'm still not sure about. I realized that a filter makes musical sense in Livemachine when playing with realtime effects. Basically its not a keyboard effects but its the last effect in the chain (of everything so to say) :) Clicking the FX labels in the Keyboard FX display won't do nothing currently - yes. Is already on my todo-list that clicking them enables the selected effect.
Besides this, in of the future versions i will include a button for fixed or free routing. Then this would be obsolete.
- I am correct in assuming that the kit load/save function hasn't been implemented yet? (There are no controls displayed, only spots where they would go.)
Exactly! That's on of the upcoming features.
Is there anything that determines the length of the mixdown beyond however long the button is enabled? (I ask because I tried doing a four bar mixdown at one point and ended up with a much smaller piece, and I'm not sure why.)
Did you click it once and then once again to stop? I realized that's a bit confusing, yes. (Whether to just click or hold it). I will describe all those things in the upcoming manual! (Oh an - you have to click it once and then again, like with the record button)
Feature suggestions:
- Re-record/overwrite the current track without moving to the next one.
I thought of that, too. Noted! I also thought of overwriting and even combining/merging with a new recording on one channel. But that might be too confusing somehow... mhh!
- A delete button per audio track so you can quickly get rid of the recording.
- Clear all recordings button (for a quick restart).
You can do that now via selecting an empty channel (SEL buttons) and then perform a one-beat-mixdown :) (Or SEL a channel and simply turn it Off before).
- A button to enable all channels for effects processing/recording, so you don't have to enable them all individually.
I thought of that as well - but then again Livemachine was designed with hardware controllers in mind - were you could simply click 6 buttons or so in one go ... :) But you could be right, i will note that as well!
- Option for setting the length of the recording in advance. When enabled, recording starts on the 1 and stops accordingly, so the loop is always in time.
Sounds like a good idea for hands-free recording. Mhh, will think about this!

note, or at the wrong time, it seems that you've got to clear the whole sequence and start over.

You're right - this will come definately!! Thanks! :)

Yes Dennis the loopers, the record button and the mix button , without all the rest inclusive level and filter ( it's nice but I have mine).
If all the loopers have their own output will be the best way to work with a host like Ableton live and the GUI will be reduced alot.

Thanks and keeo going with your excellent work

Ok, noted. Never had that disappearing problem here, but one day i might spot it :D

Right, just the loopers? Ok, can you route individual outputs from a VST Effect (?) I can easily add 8 Outputs, sure. Think i will do this, thanks very much!

Post

yes you can route 8 outputs from a vst , but think that the outputs must be in stereo and i think in VST2 you can route just 8 mono or 4 stereo , not sure about that.

Hi Dennis,

1 feature request i'd like is a channel send amount for the fx so you could blend the active fx with the currently playing channels as well as record on/off. :)

Yes, I clicked once and it started recording, then clicked again to stop it...but I guess I must have made a mistake along the way somehow.

Another thing I've run into a bunch of times... I click the record button halfway between the 4 and the 1 and stop at the same point. This normally works fine, but sometimes I end up with playback starting on the 3rd beat. I've no clue what I am doing to cause that, but more than likely it is something I am doing wrong.

Unless I misunderstand (which is highly likely)
- that only works if you have an empty channel (otherwise you have to mixdown to free something up)
- mixdowns appear to merge only to the 1st track so you can't, for example, just clear the 3rd
- the mixdown method requires multiple button presses

What I am suggesting would work independently on any track without affecting the others, and would unload the recorded audio with a single click. Of course I don't know how things work inside of LM so what I am describing may get in the way of other functionality, but it would be helpful to be able to press a button and clear any individual track.

It could just be me, but I find that even with a hardware controller its easier to press one button than six at the same time, especially if the other hand is occupied with another task. :)

Yes, it definitely would be helpful for hands free usage, and it would offer the option of a bit of a precount too, when adding extra tracks. (One of the first things I did when starting up LM was reach for my bass.) This function would be helpful for non-hands free work too because it would help make it easier to get a clean recording if you happen to have sloppy timing (like me).

on loop recorder loops , and maybe even wav player, itd be cool if those outer light dials that show loop position during playback could be rotated to line up the grooves timing.

i thought of that when i made one loop that was a beat late and i could see on the lights that it was and how easy itd be to fix if i could grab that timing light dial thing and rotate it back one notch.

but that would be useful for other things as well.
