I thought you and zedd stated your "complaints" in a friendly manner, and both of you have stayed in the discussion. MountainKing didn't go away. He just adapted. So we're all good.
:phew: Thanks for not trashing me. Ha ha. I'll go away now and exercise my finger drumming. :)

Don't go away! :-o At the very least, we're keeping the thread at the top of the "Latest Posts."

Edit: And look up above. bronxsound took care of the spamming! :D

Correct!

That video features three of my favorite Muppets. Beeker and the Swedish Chef also do a great version of Carmen.

Okay, spam spam spam spam... when I was in Hawaii once I actually tried spam. Not that bad really. Could you imagine how the guy who invented spam feels about what the name of his product turned into meaning?

Anyway, enough about spam. Talking ABOUT spam is even more spammy than just the regular spam... see?

So, if you like Squidstories I'll tell you some more. Someone was asking me last night about something related to Genesis and Phil Collins and I forget what it was but I told him the story about driving to the Genesis concert WITH Phil. He couldn't believe it. Even I can't believe I got to do that but it was just lucky that I work with his son and got to tag along.

Here's how that all happened. I guess I could give a little back story... starting maybe with when I was 14 years old I wanted to play in a band but wasn't sure which instrument to play. Then I saw a video with Tony Banks surrounded by keyboards and thought "I want to play THOSE because it looks like you can play any sound from pianos to a full orchestra to drums and percussion to guitars..." Certainly the ads back then in Keyboard Magazine for keyboards sounding like "the only limitation was your imagination"... and I could imagine a lot! ;)

Growing up I went to many concerts including Genesis if they came to town. I always wanted to meet them. But I never had a good opportunity to really. I met Chester Thompson because he goes to NAMM but none of the other guys do.

Then, when Genesis was looking for a drummer for that one record they did without Phil I had suggested my friend Nick D'Virgilio who I had played The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway with (a one off tribute show we did at Progfest in 1994... btw, I do actually prefer to do originals but I get a thrill from playing classic rock stuff with the nostalgic sounds! Also another challenge to learn and play those TB parts). Anyway, they ended up using NDV on the album and that's how I got to meet Nick Davis the co-producer/engineer for Genesis. Eventually, through Nick Davis, I got the whole band into Sonic Reality and IK products which they love so that led to some invites to The Farm and a visit to their rehearsals in New York in 2007 for the Turn It On Again Tour (with Phil back in the band). I just condensed that whole story and left out one really cool moment talking with Tony Banks - if you want to hear it let me know - but since this thread is more about drums I will focus more on Phil and Simon now that you have the back story.

So, when I was at SIR in New York to watch them rehearse I met Phil's son Simon who was there. Simon is very charismatic like his dad and has a great sense of humor so we hit it off immediately. Then Simon says "let's go closer and watch them play Los Endos!". So I walked up right behind Phil just a few feet away from his hi hat. Luckily I video taped that moment so you can actually see and hear what I'm talking about (but not the same as being there and hearing those drums acoustically - massive!)

So that was incredible. I also got to take a photo with the whole band and Simon. Then Geoff, Tony's tech, took a picture of me in his rig for fun... all in all a pretty incredible and deluxe 3D experience.

Then it came time to to see the shows and I met up with Simon in NYC to see Genesis play... The show itself was in New Jersey so we had to drive there from NYC and that's where I got to drive in the same limo/van with Phil and his family. Each band member had their own limo with their family. So I got to drive to and from the show WITH Phil and that was very interesting to see first hand. The anticipation before a stadium show like that and the buzz feeling after the show. "So, what did you guys think?" I found myself telling him what the highlights were for me and I thought about how surreal it was that when I was a kid I just wanted to meet them for 2 seconds backstage somewhere. I never expected to do this - and that is what made it extra cool for me. The surprise element.

That's the story of how I got to ride to and from the concert in the same limo with Phil Collins. Now I have a band with his son and it sounds a bit like Genesis meets... modern rock/pop/alternative music (that's instead of saying Coldplay, Radiohead, Keane... but in that area).

You'd be surprised at how many Genesis fans there are in the music industry. I met Chris and Tom Lord Alge backstage at the show in LA and they are HUGE Genesis fans with their own stories growing up... and those two probably mix more albums than anyone. Ironically Tom lives down here in Miami but I never see him. Nice guy though.

By the way, Allen is GOOD! He calls me at 9 o'clock on a Saturday to tell me he's made sure a customer was happy. The man cares! A human in customer service. A shame that's a rare thing but we're proud to be that way.

Incidentally, if you were wondering how that Squidstory relates to this group buy... the Ultimate Studio Drums bundle DOES come with the impulse response of the drum room at Genesis studio (called The Farm) where Phil recorded. It has stone walls which are very reflective and give it part of that BARKING fat sound.

Here's a pic of the room: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sonicreali ... 130883229/

My ears ring from watching that youtube video on my laptop with its tiny speakers. :hihi: I guess it's a sort of flashback reaction.

Tony Banks story please.

Just listened to (and watched videos of) a good portion of the Steve Slate samples from their web site. The samples are very well processed and sound really good (sometimes, amazing) but... am I the only one that noticed a lot of repetition in the room sounds and processing itself (compression, mostly)? I know these samples have become a sort of standard but from what I'm hearing the Sonic Reality samples are MUCH more diverse, more organic sounding, and less processed overall. Not to mention, the SR and Ocean Way room sounds are more exciting and each have a more unique character. The Steven Slate rooms all sound the same to me. Is he recording all of these kit samples in the same room(s)? Sure sounds like it!

Well, anyone else here that shares this opinion? Would be interested to hear from those using the SS samples. There's definitely room for both so it's not a competition for me. I don't have the SS kits but from what I hear on their web site and having owned many of the IP kits already, I think SR's process of sampling is superior and more versatile (yeah, I'm sure Squids the sales guy will like me saying that :hihi:).

What's been missing from IP v1 (that I REALLY hope IP2 will take care of) are presets that sound mix-ready, true V-drum support and round robining. If SR got that right this time then I think they have the better product overall. Especially at this group buy price!! Let's see what happens....

Good point. It's a lot deeper than you'd think.

281 now, so we've picked up a few today. 300 will be soon.
