And what cd's should we check out?
Toni Kakko, Sonata Arctica

Refreshes the metal genre and combines it with a sense of musical-feel to it. I love all their albums, but this last one has some nice theatrical touch to it.

Search for Sonata Arctica - Days of Grays on spotify.

gabrielconroy wrote:If by modern we're talking 20th century music, then (in vaguely chronological order) these are a lot of the musicians whom I greatly respect:

- Aleksandyr Scriabin ()
- Rachmaninoff
- Shostakovich
- Django Rheinhardt
- G.I. Gurdjieff/Thomas de Hartmann
- Miles Davis
- John Coltrane
- Brian Wilson
- The Beatles
- Talking Heads/David Byrne
- Fugazi
- Autechre
- Aphex Twin
- Radiohead

There are a lot of other artists and bands, of course, but all these people achieved something great in compositional terms.
Never seen Gurdjieff name-checked alongside Fugazi and Radiohead, but I'm all for it!

Some of my favorites:
-Claude Debussy
-Duke Ellington
-Brian Eno
-Nina Simone
-Bob Dylan--IMO his stuff from the last 10 years is the best of his career--an incredible synthesis of American musical history
-U2
-John Luther Adams
-Wayne Shorter--he has this incredible way of creating short, simple circular structures that never get old
-Joni Mitchell
-Charles Mingus

Has anyone mentionned Claude deBussy? 8)

My two main artists that I am trying to learn to play off are Miles Davis as arranged by Edstrom and Claude deBussy's favorites.

edit: I am blind. The previous post had he as the very first in a list.
