So I apologize if this has been covered (not in the mood to navigate 48 pages!), but can I get the dirt on how round robin is implemented in these two libraries?

Having spent money in the past on drum libraries that don't do round robin (but instead go for the billion velocity layer approach), I won't do it again, because sometimes a drum part demands that all out consistent sound, and I need to be able to bang at 127 for 8 measures without it sounding fake.

So, how many rr variations are there in the Ocean Way and Sonic Reality kits? I'm already sold on the sound quality (and the incredible value!), but this is important.

In reference to the coupon(s) towards the Drum Masters series:
Squids wrote:you will all get a $99 off coupon on either of them... which would essentially make this group buy FREE (if you were going to get either of those two volumes ever anyway... normally without a coupon saving you over 50% off the list price which is $229!). But the fact that you can use the coupon TWICE ($99 off Volume 1 and $99 off Volume 2 as well if you want) means that if you were ever going to get both volumes you'd be not only getting this bundle with OWD kits and hybrid kits for free but also saving another hundred bucks... all by joining this group buy.
This was mentioned way back on page 17 and it has yet to make it's way into the group buy description on the esoundz description or the one at the top of each page here. You should really add it as it is another one of those overlooked incentives to buy into this group buy. I mean a coupon that you can use TWICE to save almost $200.00 (if I'm reading this correctly) in the future should you chose to. I know it's an incentive for me, maybe it will be for someone else (especially if they did not read page 17 :) .)

Just thought it worth mentioning.

Cool Bob!

Yeah, those two are HUGE Genesis fans and actually Tom was wearing a Trick of the Tail T-Shirt and the camera man found him (obviously not knowing who it was) and he was put on the BIG screen behind the band. Chris took a snapshot of it too. It is amazing how much mixing work they've done between the two of them. Simon and I hung out with them in LA after the gig. I have a few friends in the industry who are extremely successful yet they'd secretly love to work with Genesis! Another one is John Fields. Super cool guy. Funny and... annoyingly successful. He does something like 20 albums a year and a lot of the American Idol stars and things like that. Switchfoot... He cranks it out fast so the labels love him. He's a character too. But when I told him I was going to The Farm to sit in on the 5.1 mixing sessions I detected actual envy! That's because apart from Phil, those guys don't come to the US to work so much. They have their studio and the people they like to work with and it is an island. Whereas artists in NY, Miami, Nashville and LA tend to get around and work with the popular engineers/producers.

Ironically, Allen Sides (owner of Ocean Way Recording studio and the main man behind Ocean Way Drums) worked with Phil Collins on at least one or two albums AND he did a 5.1 mix of Face Value and Hello I Must Be Going - that never got released! They should release that. I really like those two the best from his solo stuff. Great sounds Hugh got too. (that's what we went for with Hugh for his upcoming collection - the In the Air Tonight drum sound and the I Don't Care Anymore drum sound with the mics inside underneath the single head toms). But Tony Banks? Very few people get to work with him and it doesn't matter if you're a Lord Alge or one of the hottest in demand pop producers in LA. But I have to admit that one of the things I really like about those guys is that they still have the child in them that LOVES the particular music that inspired them growing up. I have that too and have never lost it. But I don't work on records like they do. I work on sounds which is MUCH safer from getting "burnt on music" than these example engineer/producers who in particular are MACHINES when it comes to years and years of music, music, music... and not much of it is 10-20 minute melodic moody epics like they grew up listening to! But in some ways you can see that's what "turns them on" (no pun intended). Guys like that are musical jukeboxes and can tell you just about anything you wanted to know about anything in music. You can have an interesting conversation with any of them all night long.

Another closet Genesis fan is Bill Botrell. Super talented engineer/producer. But that's a whole other story.

Squids wrote:But first I have to go play this Floyd Tribute thing I'm doing tonight. I do it on the side for fun. It's a local gig. Next month I'm doing some gigs with Simon Collins though and doing some of my original music which will be fun... and maybe a few Genesis covers which will also be fun. It's good to play music live you know? Gotta keep up the chops and interact with some other musicians once in a while. Woops better go! Play nice!
So Squids how did the gig go last night? What songs did you play? Out of curiosity do you brig your keyboards (which ones) or do use your virtual Trons etc or both?

It went great actually. Thanks! We got a standing ovation and everything... which is weird when doing a tribute because part of you thinks "I wish I wrote this!" and the other part thinks "Aha! So this is what it's like to be an emotional audience response to moody music!" and you think how awesome it must have been for those bands. A great experience. One of my favorite live performance experiences was playing The Lamb with Kevin. To hear the crowd ROAR with excitement is like a drug (and to many performers it really acts like one - they get addicted to it! I can see why. It feels GREAT!).

So the gig went over well. We played all of Dark Side of the Moon and I felt good because the female singer was new and had never done any kind of "rock concert" before so she was nervous... and rightfully so to do "Great Gig In The Sky" the spotlight is on you! Quite different than the oohs and aahs background parts. But a bunch of us gave her encouragement and I told her something funny before the show. I said to her "You know when a basketball player is making a foul shot and..." and then she said "I know NOTHING about basketball" so I said "Okay, when he needs to get the ball in the hoop under pressure he has to shut out everything else and get in the zone". So she said "Okay". Then I said "Just get in the zone. Don't think about the audience judging you, don't think about the band wondering if you can do it just zone in on the music and enjoy it. Look at it as a fun opportunity to have your moment." It worked! She wasn't perfect but she pulled it off and people applauded like mad. There was a grand piano there in the theatre so I even wheeled that over for Great Gig and also Wish You Were Here. I LOVE playing a real piano so that was fun too.

Getting back to your question (and sorry for drifting off topic on an off topic question - double wammy!), for these gigs I use a Nord Stage and a Nord Wave filled with my samples. I sometimes control a laptop and have SampleTank with Sonik Synth 2 and SampleTron loaded. But, depending on the set I don't necessarily need to as I can get away with it just with those two keyboards. I'd normally bring a Wurlitzer EP though but actually the Nord Stage has a good one and I run it through its internal effects which I like a lot. So it is convenient.

My rig with Simon Collins is different although it includes those two Nords as they've become staple pieces. The rig with Simon also includes a Prophet 5, CP70, Korg Oasys and Yamaha Motif... and also an acoustic piano with a Helpinstill pick up. Not that I'd take all that out on the road. I'd trigger samples to simulate some of it. Well it depends on the budget. I would like to play all of that live!

Anyway, I think I just went too keyboard-talk for this thread about a drum product and while I enjoy talking about that stuff perhaps that and also the Tony Banks story should be in another thread? I don't want to bore any e-Drummers also checking out this thread. I can talk more about drum-related things. But thanks for asking Bob! It really was a lot of fun. We also played much of Wish You Were Here and a very PROG arrangement I came up with for Set The Controls For the Heart of the Sun which is like... Floyd meets The Doors meets Nirvana meets Lamb-era Genesis! Not something you'd expect and both that and the end of Shine On where I do a "Lady Lies" piano riff are really the only moments where we drift off from authentic Floyd-like sounds. Well, a few Metheny/Mays solo riffs sometimes too. Gotta add some creativity to it or you might as well just listen to the record! It is not my ambition to be in cover bands or anything but this opportunity came up locally and they're all really good musicians so I've enjoyed doing it here and there... keep the chops up. I think it is important to keep playing - particularly music you really like.

Question for Squids (slightly OT)...

When will the kits for Infinite Player 1 be upgraded to support Infinite Player 2? Obviously, we will need to re-download each of these upgraded kits, correct? I'm specifically referring to the kits from the last 2 IP group buys (Drum Masters 1).

Thanks!
Rich

You are reading correctly. You can use it two, three, four times (once per product). It's like the ticket in. For that reason alone it very well could be worth instantly more (even if no sounds were included - just the combo of discounts it will get you on other products). But the fact that it is a screaming deal for what you get initially for $99... that itself should be a no brainer. But that is up to you guys to figure out! We can only provide it and tell you what's in it. Each person has to realize the value themselves and just make sure they get in while they can in this case. It IS one of those things that I can see someone later saying "Oh! I could have done THAT?" and ask us if we can still do it. If it was only up to us we might but in this case we're doing this in partnership with other studios and artists. We're limited to what we can do with it and this is the pinnacle at least in terms of low price with high quality and quantity of content. Sounds like a pressure sales pitch - and I know it DOES work in that way - but it is also simply the situation. A GREAT deal? YES! Something one can expect normally? NO. This is IT. Your chance to get Ocean Way Drum kits AND Drum Masters 2 Signature kits AND Infinite Player for $99 - and a $99 coupon off of various full version Drum Masters and Ocean Way Drums titles.

You just have to ask yourself. Are you SURE you want to miss out on this? Think about it.

Anyway, tomorrow I hope to get those additional audio demos done that I tried to do last week but got distracted with other stressful things. This weekend I am chilling out and focusing on this.

Hey Rich,

I saw your other post and will comment on that too at some point... delicately of course because my opinion about it is unavoidably biased. I'll focus more on what I know about which is how we do our products (and there was a post a million pages back about the various studios we've used for Drum Masters... some of these posts should be either copied to our SR forum or maybe a mod can move this thread to the SR forum after the GB is over so it doesn't disappear in case someone wants to search for things like that).

Anyway, it is being done now. Btw, it is Drum Masters 1 to Drum Masters 2. Infinite Player is the library unlock for Kontakt Player and that has version 3.5 and/or 4 available to your right now. But, if you're meaning the kits with the new round robin and other features mentioned then that will be coming within the next 1-3 months (I am shooting for THIS month but... I also don't want to rush them. SOME will be available this month though for sure. Also, you DON'T have to download the whole kits again. They are just NKM and NKI patches that have the scripting inside and reference the sample NKX's differently. So they're SUPER fast to download once we have them.

Hey Squids,

Any chance for Drumtracker being added to the goodie bag?

Yes, it all has round robin now - and pretty advanced too with both sequential and random options. The amount of alternates varies from articulation to articulation, kit piece to kit piece and kit to kit. In these it is enough to get more animation out of them and avoid machine gun effects when playing from e-Drum kits. The script (customized software part of the product) supports up to 7 additional alts per articulation (an articulation being for example a center snare or an edge snare or a rim shot etc.) but that doesn't mean all those slots are filled up. With 8-9 gigabyte kits such as those in EpiK DrumS you see much more of that relative to the size. But for these 1 gigabyte per kit (average size) you really get a nice mix of velocities, performance articulations and round robin alting where it needs it the most (some things don't need it at all really like a foot hi hat... I mean it could! But that's where you get into the 10 gigabyte kits which are no longer reasonable for download!).

Hope that helps! Bottom line is that we've worked on ways to make it sound more realistic and have natural variation yet not be out of control either. You can rely on certain timbres yet you CAN play 127 for 8 measures without it sounding fake - at least to most people's ears.

Not unless you can convince Toontrack to throw it in! We were only able to offer their EZ Player Pro because we made a deal to license it to bundle with Drum Masters and Ocean Way Drums products. It seemed a really good way to add in some of the advanced midi features of products like EZ Drummer and Superior to products based on Kontakt that don't have a midi sequencer. Granted many people use their DAW to do their sequencing. But I really like that Toontrack made a product like EZ Player Pro to be dedicated to midi grooves. I also happen to love how BFD2 deals with midi and kit pieces too. Scott did a brilliant thing there too. One can even use BFD2 to convert midi files to use with other things. I haven't done much of that yet but he gave me a personal demo of what it could do in that regard last time I saw him.

I've never used Drumtracker. I have DrumAgog but even that I haven't used a ton (even though I think we're going to do some Gog libraries). In drum sessions I spend a lot of time getting the sound I want in the studio OR I use samples in the first place. But we recognize there is more and more demand for drum replacement so we're going to do things more and more to cater to that market as well since we have good sounds for it.
