Theres still plenty time for more folks :)

How are we all doing? Any more tracks on the way? :)

Hoped to have mine finished today, but got caught up in that key correcting arp thing again .... then decided it was time I got some xmas decorations up! :hihi: ... perhaps the presence of multicoloured blinking lights will provide some inspiration :)

Post

Anybody out there?

Post

Got my track finished :) ... but my ears are frazzled ... I'll post it up when I get a chance to tweak the mix.

I think I'm gonna get another track started, I feel like that first one was merely a lesson in getting the hang of FNS4 :hihi:

Hi all :)

Long time KVR lurker here but thought I might join for this one.

Although I have doubts I will be able to finish a track to actually enter the competition, but as is said, this is a good learning experience as much as anything and good fun.

Also interesting to see what others have done with the same starting point (some good stuff already), what freebies there are and which are being used. Among those, the DDFF EQ II is really a revelation.

But the question is, how far can one go with effects as the rules talk about? I mean, it doesn't take much turning of knobs in f.i EQ II to totally transform the sound to virtually the unrecognizable and the same goes for some reverbs?

Post

Hi V'ger, welcome to OSC! :)

Yeah, you're right about the capacity of reverb and EQ to transform a sounds character, and the same can be said of compression and other permitted fx.

It all comes down to discretion really, and I think it's all about using the fx as they are supposed to be used in a standard production setup ... ie verbs and delays for space, EQ for cleaning up and enhancing, compression for emphasis and peak control.... but we can allow for these to be pushed a little if it is in the interest of making the best of a synth and the track as a whole.
I dont mind admitting I have used compression and gating to emphasise my kick and snare .. perhaps to a point where I am achieving more effectiveness from these elements than may be apparently available from FNS4, but that is still a long way from distorting, flanging, repitching/cutting/reversing samples, pitch shifting, granulising etc .... ie, if I turn the effect off, the sound will change, but not dramatically, and certainly not unrecognisable.

So I wouldn't worry an awful lot about it, but do try and get as much of the sound you want from the synth before leaning too hard on the fx :)
A good approach is to get a feel for the synths character first ... if its a scrapey, squeaky beast, then dont attempt a dub reggae sound. if its a bit pinky-plonky, dont do metal! .... go with the flow, and you will not to have to brutally squeeze a sound out with heavy fx use :)

... best of luck with your track! :)

Red peppers in dynamite sauce? I must have been out of my mind!

Hello MJB! Good to see you back again :) ... I was thinking about you actually, ... the sequencer in FNS takes me back to that infectious 'get out the house if you wanna go fast' phrase which featured in your last(?) OSC submission :hihi:

Well thats my track uploaded!
I have the guts of another written, but not sure if I'm gonna have time to finish it off ... fingers crossed :)

Sorry it took me a while, but my dayjob's been taking like 11 hours a day off my life :(
Anyway, here it is:

Mac of BIOnighT: The Brightest Star

FnS x 12 (I think)
delays
reverbs
rubytube
eq
stereo field widener
Antress Exciter

Since it's Christmas and all, I decided to go with a cheerful and merry track pretty much in the vein of my Space Station Happiness album

(which can be downloaded for free along with all the others in this series here
http://www.macvibes.com/spaceadventures/ - end of shameless self-promotion (hey, I'm giving them away for free, anyway ;-) )

Back to work, now :( :(

Post

And here's mine:

A track called : Fast 'n Slow.

14 Flex-N-Stein 4.01

Track Fx :

1 x Classic Chorus
1 x BootEQmkII
1 x Jb Omniverb
2 x ReaComp
1 x ReaDelay.

Some trackEQ, no automation.

Master Fx :

1 x CLAS
1 x Tls Maximizer.

Enjoy.

P.S. Thanks Mac :)
