Have to wait on Squids for that one.

Not in this bundle but in Drum Masters 2 Signature Kits Vol. 2 there is the Stewart Copeland signature kit sampled. Although I am also going to be sampling one in the specific style of the Ghost In The Machine and Synchronicity albums with producer/engineer Hugh Padgham as well. We already recreated a great and highly authentic Phil Collins "Face Value" and "Hello I Must Be Going" style drum sound which will be coming out in Q1 sometime of 2010... all for the Infinite Player (and maybe BFD2 if the Peart kit sells well in that format first).

Neither the Copeland style or Collins style kits involve the actual drummers though. Can't always be that lucky... and I even play in a band with Phil's son! Although I didn't ask Phil directly or through his son Simon (can't do that really). I did ask through Geoff Callingham who I interface directly with for technical/sound/software stuff for the members of Genesis. I said to him "What do you think? Would Phil do it?" and he thought "Mmmmm. Not a good time to ask. I wouldn't." So I left it at that. I am not sure if he ever asked him or just knew it wasn't likely. But we did get two producer/engineers Hugh Padgham and Nick Davis involved in those sample sessions. Hugh produced The Police, Sting, Genesis and Phil Collins. So his collection which will officially be announced next year will include some Collins and Copeland style kits.

I'll tell you a Copeland story. It's not the usual "pro" behind the scenes story... it goes back to when I first started playing. When I was 15 years old I lived in New Orleans (hence the Gumbo) just for a short time. My parents owned an art gallery in the French Quarter and I was doing something in the back when I saw some excited girls run up to this tall blonde guy with glasses in the alley. Then when he walked away one of them said "Say hello to Sting!" and immediately I realized who it was. Being a pretty big Police fan at the time I freaked when I heard that and ran into the gallery asking for a pen so I could get his autograph. I was so excited that I couldn't speak straight and I also didn't want to miss him. So my Mom was asking me "What do you need it for?" and I said "Mom, it's The Police!!!! The Police!!!!" which was hilarious because to most people that sounds like the ACTUAL police so the whole gallery of people freaked out in confusion... was it a raid of some sort? Was there a crime taking place? I successfully cleared out the whole gallery whether people realized it was the band or thought it was something else. Woops! Hehe, sorry!

I finally got the pen and rushed down the Alley and said "Excuse me. Are you Stewart Copeland?" and then he said something extremely disappointing which was "I will sign your pieces of paper if you do not bother me." Oh man... I felt like SUCH a jackass with my little piece of paper and being just like everyone else who bugged him everywhere he went. I did understand that can be annoying even at the time but I couldn't help but be a bit devastated. He signed the napkin or whatever I had but I threw it out. I wasn't THAT upset over it but I do think that's the last time I ever asked anyone for their autograph... apart from people I've met signing something meaningful like drummers signing drum heads or cymbals after a session and things like that... or getting autographs for our customers (btw, the first 100 EpiK DrumS and 50 scattered randomly after that will come with an autographed postcard from Ken Scott, sometimes with a special note!).

However, I thought it would be amusing if I ever did do a contract with Stewart Copeland so I could say back to him "Listen, I will sign your pieces of paper (the contract) if you do not bother me, OKAY? Hang on!" (trailer for REVENGE OF THE SQUIDS). Just kidding. I'm still a big fan of his sound, his playing and those classic Police records. I learned then and after that it is not always good to meet your "heros". It's risky. Sometimes it can be incredibly cool in the right circumstances and sometimes incredibly disappointing... so it is important to disconnect the person from the music. The music is always bigger than the person anyway most of the time.

Come on, that was a good Squidstory! Right? Goes back awhile... Synchronicity tour.

Anyway, the Copeland Signature kit on the full DM Signature Kits Vol. 2 library is pretty good actually and it also has Octobans! You'll get a coupon in this bundle if you get it to have that library for half price so... you might as well join this because that makes this one FREE... if you were going to buy the full Signature Kits library that is (and those kits are not going to be available individually, just in that collection).

Any chance of a layaway scheme for things like Ken Scott collection say over 4 months and then we can buy. It's just odd that here in the UK it's a legal obligation to feed children........ :?

Great stories, Squids. I am signed up to the group buy and waiting anxiously for my Christmas present to myself :)

I'll keep a lookout for both the In the Air Tonight kit and the Copeland one. I don't mind who hit the skins. I just love the sounds. Does the group buy give me a good upgrade path to either or both of those kits?

Incidentally, both drummers mentioned have developed something of a reputation for having towering egos and not being all that tolerant of the ordinary mortals that buy their records, but that's not entirely uncommon in the music business, is it? I've worked closely enough to the industry to let that sort of thing just wash over me. So don't feel bad.

Bring on the Octobans! :)

The first 18 years are the worst.

Then they leave home .... and join a rock band. :)

About 6 years after that, they begin showing you more kindness and respect,
after having taking their lumps on the street, and realizing you meant well,
despite the typical parental failings. :)

Ha ha! That's a riot. Nice story Squidly... and an interesting tidbit about your parents owning an art gallery in New Orleans.

I hear you. A few times when I was a couple of decades younger I approached some of my idols. A few of them were very warm towards me and made me feel wonderful, but there were a few embarrassing moments too. And most disappointingly, one of my idols acted friendly and even invited me into the tour bus to hear a song I wanted to play for him. He listened and when it was over he led me out of the bus without saying a word and walked over to a security guard, said something quietly, and then walked away without another word to me. The security guard walked over to me and said "He told me he's done with you". What a total asshole!

And even though the music *should* be bigger than the person, it is really difficult in this case because he is a singer... and so now I cannot enjoy listening to his music anymore. As soon as I hear his voice, I am reminded of how insulting he was... and so unnecessarily.

On another note, I am extra happy with Sonic Reality today. I worked through the night, and I have had a problem rhythm guitar track which has been bugging me for days. I decided to try to layer it with some sounds from my Sonik Synth 2 collection, and I found some really delicious presets which turned my problem track into a very exciting track. All that extra work that you do making those extra instrument presets really paid off for me tonight. And so I thank you. :-)

Actually, Phil Collins by contrast was one of the nicest people I've met in the industry. The first day I met him was at Genesis rehearsals in 2006 for the reunion tour. He was really friendly in general but what I thought was particularly nice was when the band was leaving for the day he had walked out the door at SIR in NYC and walked back in to specifically say goodbye to me. "Oh, hey, it was nice meeting you Dave. See you tomorrow?"

So, the other lesson is that it is all about context! If you meet one of your favorite artists in the right comfort zone that makes all the difference. If you're 15 and you chase someone down the street who is trying to have a normal day un-noticed that is a lot different than managing to be around the studio or a rehearsal hall or backstage where you're invited. Guard is down etc.

That said, there are differences in personalities. Some people's egos run away with them. I've seen a lot of that. But I've also seen a lot of really cool people as well... really it is mostly about context and also how you are with them. For instance, when I worked with Barbara Streisand people just assumed she was a tyrant b**ch@! (no idea why I asterisked myself) and I DID see her RIP on Greg Phillengaines for asking to take a picture at the wrong time or I watched her fire the video crew on the spot. But she was super nice to me and I didn't ask to take a picture until AFTER the show was over... so timing is also a factor.

I know that many of you have various amounts of experience in the music industry and I'm sure you've had situations where you had to test the waters and tame yourself a bit to be able to handle a cool situation working with pros. Overall it is all about true confidence and comfort zone. No one likes to be around someone who is nervous or too anxious! You should have seen Peter Gabriel when I first met him. For someone who is willing to jump into the crowd and let strangers lay their hands on him he sure is shy. He was making me nervous! Pretty funny.

Well, we all have stories... (name the movie - first one to name the movie reference gets 5 epointz!!!! good luck. This one is easy).

So, every time you hear the lyrics "Do you really want to hurt me? Do you really want to make me cry?" you think Boy is still talking to you? :D

Just kidding. That IS harsh man. Dying to know who it is. That makes my SC story look like a Disney happy ending! Yours I think I'd jump in front of the moving bus with a note saying "I'm done with you too!" SPLAT (clean THAT up!) - just kidding. But, seriously, I understand how it is hard to forget that and not let it affect how you enjoy the music. It always will a little bit but... I still maintain that the music is most often larger than the person... and it also lives a lot longer too.

But, there are SOME cases where the music is even worse than the person... one case of that was CC Devil or however you spell his name. I got coaxed into going to a Poison concert (what a man will do for a woman) and he sang one of his own songs called "I Hate Every Bone In Your Body But Mine". That one somehow I don't think will be immortalized! Although it was a touching love song.
