Right, first of all, I just want to say what a privilege it was to have enjoyed the encouragement and the blessing of OSCers to have this comp feature one of my own creations ... and an even greater privilege to hear what has been created with 'Flex-N-Stein4'

See thread... http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... sc&start=0

Personally, in view of the above, I feel like a winner already, but we have 17 tracks submitted, and it is your votes which will decide the best Flex-N-Stein4 only track.

We will once again go for a multi-vote system.

You can award points to 5 tracks in allocations of 10, 5, 3, 2 and 1.
So that's 10 points to your favourite, 5 points to second fave, 3 for third... etc
When you have decided on your votes, post in this thread. Please submit all your votes in a single post in a clear manner.....
...something like,

Track title - 10
Track title - 5
Track title - 3
Track title - 2
Track title - 1

Please listen to all the tracks before casting a vote ... I know it takes a while, but its the only fair way to do things ...

So here's how!
@@Go to the online folder ....
http://www.4shared.com/dir/21373365/665 ... lenge.html

Here you can listen to individual tracks, and read accompanying notes re. what what was used in their making. You can download individual tracks as you wish.

Alternatively, from the same link/folder, you can also download the zipped folder '00 - FNS4 Tracks'
This will be a lot quicker than downloading individual tracks, You will then have all the tracks in one place to listen to at your leisure! :)

You can also access a playlist page here,
http://www.4shared.com/play/21373365/66 ... lenge.html

... and there may be a second playlist page, but as usual I've been a bit slack in contacting BrainOvulation to ask that he organise his usual alternative playlist link .... Should he be able to find the time at this frantic period, I will edit here and add the link ... in any case, thanks for everything BO. :tu:

Reviews, however brief, are always welcome, but even if you can only find the time to add a short comment, then please do! ...it keeps the thread alive, and encourages others to listen/vote. I will do a review when I can grab a bit of time to do the job justice.

******Tattiemannies ( stuck record ) guide to voting******

A broad approach I would recommend would be to disregard genre and to some extent, production quality. Its more about how the artist an the chosen synth have produced the range and quality of sounds necessary for the track.
so .... we dont go asking "why no brass?" in a folk tune, anymore than we ask "why no soft pad?" in a punk track....... The idea from the outset is to create a track using only one synth..... and the proof of the pudding is about how that challenge has been met, so it's not about the merits of the synth, nor the merits of the track, it's about how the artist has shown that the limitation of using only one synth, does not necesarily limit their ability to produce a quality track, in a style of their choosing.

So I suppose what we're looking for as a yardstick is the "wow! you did that whole track with one synth and hardly any effects????????" factor ...
.... but thats my take on things .... feel free to apply your own criteria when casting your vote.

*@*.. I'm sure we all have more than enough to be thinking about over the festive period, so I'll extend the voting period ... Closing date for votes will be the 10th of January**
....Enjoy the music! ... and Merry xmas and a happy new year!! :) :)

Note .... I will tally the votes and post updates as the votes come in.... and I'm sure there will be the usual willingness to correct me if I get anything wrong :hihi:

Juat a post to be notified by the forum (if it works) of any news ;-)
Oh, and merry christmas to all :)

Post

The Christmas Message in in from Norfolk with the following results. I'll just mention before that no less than nine tracks made my shortlist for this OSC - a new record. I really need a new PC so I can up the production effects

10 - Flex 'n Stramash - tattiemanie - The developer takes top honours with this mix of Soft Cell vs Pigbag insanity. Made me actually laugh when I heard it. A real demonstration of how to workout a synth.

5 - Flex 'n Dance - Totolitoto - A great example of effects from this synth as well as some great leads.

3 - Flex 'n Morph - V'Ger - Some people wnet a bit too chip tune for my tastes and here is an example of using the synths ability in this area but making sound something rather specially epic.

2 - Fast 'n Slow - Yeager - Preferred of his two entries because of the delicate treatment of the sounds and arrangement.

1 - Flexensteins Lab - Xenobioz - A mix of JMJ busking and Depeche Mode melody. Interesting mix of sounds er, I just liked it anyway :D

Enough said, great fun as ever. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone.

Cheers,
Mouxbar.

It's getting increasingly difficult to vote, even with several choices in terms of points, level is going up... it'll take me a while, I'm afraid :?

Post

Cheers for the votes and the comments Mouxbar ... your comments re. my own track made me laugh when I read them :hihi: .... but I suppose you're right! :) ... it does sound like you say .... when you know what to listen out for :)

Anyway, nice to get off to a start! :)

Post

OK, its a good time to say ....

Merry Xmas Everyone!

..got the kids stockings placed, and the pressies wrapped ... and the first thing they are gonna see when they come through to the living room in the morning ( apart from santa and reindeer leftovers .... :hihi: ) ... is an electronic drumkit all set up and ready to go! :) ... they will wonder who its for, and I will be diplomatic and tell them its for both of them .... but actually its for me!! :hihi:

Thanks for the vote Mouxbar, and it's funny you should mention chip music in your comment as coming back to music from a longer break I wanted to go back to basic after getting lost and tired of intricate productions and sounds that had no real zest or melody, have been checking out what people could do with the simplest things and equipment like early games etc. I mean check out f.i. , amazing when you think about it. Or one of my favs,

In fact this was one of the very reasons I wanted to join this competition in the first place; be forced to stick to one (seemingly) simple thing and make the most of it with melody and what was available in a single instrument. Maybe the chip music inspiration shone through, although I always liked pattern stuff like early Mike Oldfield etc anyway. Not surprisingly the old sin of overproduction overkill took hold early on, but then I had to check out most of the free VSTs out there and a lot just stayed on the track.. ;)

Hehe, that's cool, somebody will be over the moon! ;)

And Happy holidays to all. Image

Will get to the voting soon I hope.

It's Rob not Ron  . I like the SID music of Rob Hubbard more than any other music. :hail:

Post

It could be that there was something very special about that SID chip. It may have been that it was 10 to 20 years ahead of its time.

In any case, it's beginning to sound to me as though a great number of these VSTI softsynths are actually quite capable; Flex-n-Stein included.

Ok, it's just that I see the hardware/software debates, and even the pro/free VST debates. I've been dealing with mostly all free stuff and it sounds great! I just go by my ears and not what anyone says.

We're seeing (hearing) a revolution in music. Anyone who wants to can download a host, and some VSTIs, and be composing music within minutes. All that has to happen is for a person to be exposed to it.

Anyway, yada yada... Everyone have a great holiday season!

(17 entries... this is exciting)

Post

Yes the SID was good for it's time especially considering computer soundchips.
Also the composers who used it, were very good in putting a lot of detail and expression into the sounds. PWM leads.

And here are my votes

Flex 'n Morph - V'ger - 10
The Conversation - morflex 5
Bits 'n Pieces - OSCXI(2) - Yeager 3
Flex-n-stramash - tattiemannie 2
Flex-n-Dance - Totolitoto 1

a lot of good tracks in this OSC

So true, Synth1 can rival any pro stuff and I've just discovered ZynAddSubFX which also sounds amazing (although with a tricky VST interface).

Both mentioned synths are two of the best sounding freewares available.

Synth1 is SUPER easy to program!
ZynAddSubFX not nearly as easy to program but super deep as far as features.

I think Tattiemannie has synth1 as the next OSC. :wheee:
