mrhudson wrote:Alrighty, here's a question! So, now that I'm in the group buy, these coupons are pretty tempting. With this package, we get ENHANCED e-drum playability on the OWD kits. So, we start playing them, start loving, then should I:
(i) buy the OWD DL edition - because those might get the playability enhancements?

Getting the OWD DL Edition is a good idea and there is a good chance we'll be able to bring over the features somehow - just no guarantee yet. But one of the best things about being able to check out 10 different kits in THIS Group Buy is to know which ones you'd want to have 3 full mixes of (which you get by getting the full DL edition) and also which kits to pick a la carte which can either be the ones you have here for more mixes OR the kit numbers you don't have.

(ii) Or, just go for OWD gold (i.e., if it is known that the DL editions won't get those enhancements applied?)

Well, GOLD is really great to have anyway even without all of the enhanced features. There's more of a chance DL will get those features added at least quicker than the multichannel OWD (Silver & Gold) but... I don't think my friends at Ocean Way are against it or anything. It just depends on what their plans are for next year and what they want to focus on... plus remember they ARE busy producing albums with major artists and things like that! But they are really cool and I personally think it is only a matter of time before we find a way to do it.

I guess part of the question is - what is "lost", so to speak, in terms of e-drum playability from this group buy to the OWD Gold version?

Well, Silver and Gold OWD have GM, iMAP and V-Drum mapping. They don't have the custom map with midi learn where you can assign anything to anything. BUT, remember you can also just map your e-Drum kit hardware TO the kit (of any of those formats) and in many ways that is better because you can do it ONCE and it works (so you can do that with this GB as well of course). You don't have control over the round robin in the GUI like you do here but there is round robin under the hood in OWD's V-Drum maps. Look, it won tons of awards as it is and people do love it. So, it isn't that it NEEDS these updated features... but the newest features we have in this group buy ARE nice. No doubt. Bottom line is this. IF you love the sound of Ocean Way Drums and you want the ability to mix so many mics discretely per kit piece then GET IT! It's great.

And, any update on whether the DL versions will get the playability enhancements that you've mentioned for this group buy. Could one recreate the entirety of OWD Gold through the downloaded multichannel kits at a comparable price (to get any playability enhancements?) Some important questions I think when considering any coupon assisted purchase.

Not sure I understand this part but I think I answered it above?

Remember too that you will get coupons for Drum Masters 2 Multitrack Drum Kits & Grooves as well, plus Signature Drum Kits Vol. 1 & 2. I know it is tough to know what you get there because it isn't released yet. But it will be next month and you DO retain ALL of the same features plus more (with the Multitrack kits there's even more) and you'll be able to expand your set up with more sounds that way as well.

Thanks Rev. I am. Hope everyone else is too! I love to travel and see new places. I was thinking about all of the people on KVR being from all over the world today and it is really amazing. One person could be eating at some chain restaurant like Applebee's (horrid) and another eating some home-made fresh dish from Spain or Italy or France or Portugal or Japan... The food around the world fascinates me almost as much as the sounds. I've tasted things in the last 24 hours that were absolutely DELISH and I've never tried them before. Breakfast was unbelievable. Chila Kiles (for sure the spelling was wrong there... you should see what a CLOWN I look like when I try to speak Spanish!).

There ARE some great dishes in the US. Cajun food is one of my favorites and I love the New England Clam Chowder, Lobster or Alaskan King Crab... but if you want a good steak then Argentina and Brazil seem to have that one down. It makes other steaks look like Steakums. ;) (for those that know what that is). The food in Italy is just ART. One of the best things about doing stuff with IK is visiting Italy. They are spoiled with fresh home made pasta, truffles and lasagna from Bologna that melts in your mouth! Let's not even talk about France! Tasty as it gets. Here I am getting to try authentic Mexican food and it makes the chain Mexican restaurants in the US look so sub par now.

Anyway, the sample everything philosophy extends beyond just sounds. ;)

So here's one of my "brush with the famous" stories. When I was a lowly studio intern (as opposed to being a lowly whatever I am now!), I worked briefly at a certain studio here in Miami where a certain Irish band was working on an album. Anyway,as Squiddy has explained before, it's a big no-no to talk to the talent unless they address you, so even though I was a huge fan, I never really saw them and I just made coffee (and as I tell my students/minions/bandmates now, always make bad coffee, so they'll make you do something more interesting!)and did my best to be invisible.

A few months later, I went to see them at our local stadium (go Fins!), and I was backstage. I'm standing there and who's next to me but, well, we'll call him "the Hedge." He proceeds to ask me what i thought of the show, which was great, and then spends the next few minutes telling me where he made mistakes and how it's important not to repeat them, because (paraphrasing) he didn't want to "disappoint" anyone. Ha! Super nice guy. Now, I'm never star-struck or anything, but this is one of two or three people who reduce me to a blubbering pile of jelly, as I learned to play by playing along with his records.I think maybe I saw him once the whole time they were recording (which I think was two weeks), and I don't even remember it.

Imagine my shock when some management-type dragged him away and he said "nice talking to you, great coffee man!"

Awesome.:)

rocketeer
Cool story. Yeah The Hedge and Hono are cool guys. ;)

Was that at Criteria? Sonic Reality's studio is right down the street in that area where all the recording studios are. We were right next to Yngwie Malmsteen's place. Although he moved and has it rented out to someone else now.

Anyway, guys like that want to be treated like normal people. I heard that band even has drinks in the Irish pubs like anyone else when they're back in their home towns. I met Eric Clapton once at a billiards place in LA because a friend of mine from Guildford was in town and he's hung out with him at a pub a bunch of times. So he introduced me and Clapton was another person who was extremely friendly. Shook your hand and remembered your name. They are all just regular people that get idolized which is a double edged sword (npi). On the one hand it is great to have people you admire and music to love from them. On the other hand... we're all just human and regardless of our different backgrounds, color, religeon, success... we all live and die in a window of time here on Earth. All vulnerable to the same things. All eat, sleep and go to the toilet... I won't elaborate on that but you get my point. Many illusions in life.

One thing I like to think about -if you'll forgive me getting philosophical here - is that no matter where you are in the world compared to the next person the sky is more or less the same! Clouds, sun, moon... okay some places more gray than others (and yes, my fellow Floridians ARE spoiled with some good sun and blue skies!). But if we all look up a bit more I think it helps break us out of look at the walls too much... if you know what I mean.

But hey! Ho. Woah, that's right. We're having a group buy here about drums! Some fun chats in here though and I really appreciate everyone's participation in this thread. This has been one of the most enjoyable group buys we've had.

Right on and well put Dave! :tu: 8)

Happy Holidays everyone

Here's to peace on earth. Well, let's at least give it a shot, ok?

All the best my KVR friends,

Squids wrote:If you want to know what it was, you will probably laugh, but it was because we were calling the "slots" for where you could put the toms and cymbals "positions". I never liked that but as I was explaining it to people -especially e-Drummers who think of positions more as "positions of the snare" (such as the position sensing of a TD20) I thought that we were really asking for confusion there... so a terminology thing like that actually takes days to fix. But I think it is more clear that you have these open "slots" to put kit pieces into as opposed to them being called "positions" which is just not the right word. We actually had this for the toms in DM1. There wasn't much confusion though but still... there are HUNDREDS of people in this group buy and we are going to do unprecedented tutorials on how it all works so I want it to go smooth.
No... I think it was a very wise decision for you to correct this, and it is appreciated. I agree that they should be called slots.

I was among those who were confused by the toms in Infinite Player when it first came out, not understanding why there were extra "positions" even though there were no drums loading into those slots. A lot of that initial confusion was a result of there not being an Infinite Player manual. I would hope that over the past year you have actually created an Infinite Player manual so that new users will be better able to understand how to load kits and adjust settings for optimum use. Kontakt can be a little overwhelming for a first time user.
Well, there's Kontakt itself which does have a manual (and we copied it into the Infinite Player manual). That covers basic functionality of how Kontakt works... not that it is the best manual in the world but we didn't write that. One of these days we might re-write that part and improve it though.

But then there's how we customize it with our proprietary scripts and the features of our sound products. Our goal is to vastly improve that so that people can get the most out of it. We listen and learn from our users and factor that into the next generation of products such as these Drum Masters 2 range products.

Sometimes as we do things someone in the team names something and we all get used to it. The positional toms was one of those. I don't know who named them that but it wasn't me. Maybe one of our coders and it was written into the code and applied to every kit so it would have been a big deal to change (as it just WAS right now). I really should have had them change it earlier but it occurred to me while I was talking about it to people that just a simple word change like that can make such a huge difference.

So, for anyone reading and wondering what I'm talking about, what I am referring to is the possible locations for any of the toms or cymbals to be placed. It's mostly for the finger drumming iMap mode but can also apply to the others as well. You see, each tom or cymbal isn't just one note of samples but a scheme of notes with different performance articulations from edge to rim. So, to make your own set of up to 6 toms is SUPER easy with these selectable "slots". You simply load the tom instrument into the multi. Then select on the GUI which slot you want it to be in (that chooses where it will be mapped) and you can pitch and pan it differently too! So you can even take a Ringo-style 2 tom set and turn it into a 6 tom set just with pitching them differently and panning them. Or you can load up some Roto toms in slots 1-3 and 2 rack toms and a floor tom on slots 4-6... or you could make a set of 6 floor toms if you wanted. So many possibilities, especially the more kits and kit pieces you have. That's why the upgrade discounts are going to be so cool. I will explain all of the advantages to what more you can get that's different than what comes in this group buy when we're done... especially since this group buy isn't over and you all keep earning MORE stuff the more the group numbers get higher! So what you don't have keeps changing! ;)

I bought this AND Steven Slate as to me, they serve to totally different purposes. There's gonna be quite a racket in the house...

Rocketeer
Oh... remember everybody, I worked something out with Steven so you can get Steven Slate Drums at a special discount for joining this group buy! We're going to have his products on esoundz next month. I think it is a $25 coupon but hey... that's a meal!

Anyway, good presents to enjoy. When I think about what people buy - trinkets and whatnot... a bass on a plaque that sings, a glass bird, a new tie... Then I think about musical instruments, software and samples... there's no question to me which is more fun. For all of us that make music we have some really good things to dig into.

Oh and MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL :tu:

Post

Alright. Time to join the Merry. It's going to be a fiesta with drunken Latin women tonight. I may not survive. I am bringing a keyboard and I may be forced to play some cheesola (I am not the best jukebox player - I like to improvise too much and I don't read music all that well). Luckily there will be other musicians too who can take over! I've been lucky to be on line at all without anyone nagging. Hanging with some really cool people here. Okay gotta go! Have a good one! Squids-o-claus is going to sneak down your chimney and leave you some samples... maybe see what you have in the fridge and I'm warning you that I do like to drink right out of the bottle so... if your apple juice looks low in the morning then you know I was there.

He sprang to his keyboard, to his team gave a whistle,
And they started to play with a groove that could sizzle.
And I heard him exclaim, as he danced out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

You should try Portugal's food. It's absolutely great and very natural which seems to be hard to find these days. We had a group of about 40 americans 2 years ago in a restaurant near Leiria and they went crazy about it.

My girlfriend is Venezuelan and i also have a few friend from abroad and they all agree that Portugal's cuisine is delicious. But hey every country or culture has its own traditions so none is better than the other just simply different and it all comes down to the individual tastes.

You should definitely try it out some day.

I heard on the tv that a food contest happened at New York about 2 or 3 months ago and a portuguese lady won it by making a delicious portuguese dish.

Getting anxious to try it out?
