Hi, Squidz:
I have some questions about velocity switching. How many samples are there per drum, generally speaking? And, is there any direct control over the velocity switching points in the Infinite Player? The reason I ask is that I bought into one of the ReTank group buys a while back in part because the included SampleTank L player had some I Map kits in it, and I was really interested in them. But, between the limited number of velocity layers and the way they were mapped, I found them to be completely unusable, even after extensive tweaking of velocity curves in both SampleTank and my midi controller (there seemed to only be two samples per drum, with a huge difference in volume between them, so that they were either to loud or to soft, and nothing in the middle). While this looks like a great buy, I don't want to take another chance unless I can be sure that I have more control over the velocity switching and sample volume than was possible in SampleTank (which I am otherwise very happy with).

Cool stuff. Very different from the Italian artists I've heard (e.g., Al Bano & Romina Power, Ricchi e Poveri, Zucchero)autodafe wrote:

Yeah that album took forever to come out too and it was nice they remembered to credit me. That doesn't always happen.zedd wrote:Ha! Well for the record, I don't consider actual discussion to be spam.Squids wrote:We're spamming this crap out of Zedd right now! (jk, he likes it)
I was just thinking of how I wished that I could have been at a recording session with Jon Brion and Aimee Mann. There were some Beatlesque flavours in that project, and some high-quality production. Definite artistry.
I can remember those sessions vividly. Jon was fascinated that I had a Chamberlin and was going to buy it off me until... he found one for $50 in a garage sale. One man's trash I tell ya. I sold one of my Chamberlins to Tom Waits and another to Neil Finn... I should have kept one though. That was a beautiful instrument... even if it was a contraption that could fall apart at any moment.
I DID get to buy my old Mellotron back from Stan Cotey - the guitarist for Kevin Gilbert's first band and a great all around guy (he also played The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway with me, Nick D'Virgilio and Kevin Gilbert at "Progfest" - yep that's right, it is EXACTLY what you think it is - in 1994). This Mellotron used to be called the Smellotron because it used to belong to Bobby Sherman - singer from the 60s - and apparently someone used to store diapers in it... it has since been thoroughly cleaned. But I sold it to Stan and got the chance to buy it back... but the Chamberlins are long gone. I actually had quite a few of them. I had Mike Pinder's Chamberlin that he used to tour with The Moody Blues. That thing REALLY was falling apart. It was a cut down 4 manual one with tolex.
Anyway, the irony is that I actually saw that Stan Cotey joined this group buy! He didn't even say anything... I wonder if he's reading this. He works at Fender now. I guess he wants to have some Nick D'Virgilio drums.
Btw Autodafe, great story. I am glad you shared it with us.

So, back in 1991-92 I had a band, we took part in a rock contest and were selected for a compilation (still on vinyl) and a concert in a famous place in Milan.
We had the opportunity to record a track in a big and famous studio here with a famous producer who did many Italian artists in the eighties.
we were 18-20 years old, no experience, lots of influences mainly by Living Colour, rock/metal bands, lots of stuff really.
The track we selected was a song against war (the first Gulf War was just happening), which had some strong metal chords, anti-militarist rap words and so on. Quite ahead of times for the Italian scene at the beginning of the nineties.
The famous producer had a listen to the finished song and insisted that we should "sweeten" the song a bit, and that we should record a small "acoustic intro". We hated the idea, and refused to to that, but in the end it was something like "take that damn 12-string guitar and record an 8-bars intro or you're not going to be on the album". So we did, but really hated him and the version of the song...

Yes, Matt Chamberlain (besides having a cool name) is a fantastic drummer. I've never met him but he's worked with a lot of my favorite artists and I am a big fan of his sound and playing. Good to see others that know of him. Great musician.2busdriver wrote:I'd welcome a Jon Brion session, particularily a drums\percussion\keys samples! Regarding a Jon Brion sample collection... I've talked to him about it before but he's iffy on computers... or was. Now I am sure he's gotten into it some but even still, he's more into just creating on the spot with things and having his own personal library of noises. I doubt he'd do a sample library. But you never know.
Someone else you wouldn't think would be into computers is Tom Waits... and generally speaking he isn't. But one time not that long ago (maybe 2-3 years or so? 4?) I got this phone call from him and his manager. I wasn't sure if he remembered that I sold him his Chamberlin in the late 80's or not but they were calling because I had this "Squids Tron" collection and they were doing a play or a musical and Tom didn't like JUST the sound of the orchestra... he wanted some GRIT in there too but he also didn't want to take his Chamberlin down there... as I said, it was fragile and well... the sounds changed via a greasy bicycle chain! http://www.flickr.com/photos/sonicreali ... 662628412/
So I told him that I had samples of HIS Chamberlin in this so... apparently he got a computer to use for music for the very first time just to be able to do this. But I am not supposed to talk about that to much... I think he'd rather be more known for the bicycle chain instrument! But I know a lot of old school guys that break down and get into virtual instruments and effects... it's too much fun not to. But the real thing is still the real thing. I have no love lost for hardware. The best of both worlds works for me.
Anyway, I think I MIGHT just go to sleep. I may be a little quieter tomorrow helping everyone compile and upload... gonna be a busy day! Bear with me.

Hi, Per from OddGrooves here. A couple of pages earlier in this thread I hinted that we would arrange for an upgrade offer. And here it is:
Special OddGrooves upgrade offer
As a Group Buy participant you have the chance to upgrade to the full set of OddGrooves products (over 7000 advanced MIDI grooves in a total of 16 different time signatures) and save over 50% compared to retail price!
Brief descriptions of our libraries:
Basic Drumming - "Odd meters for newbies". Not that odd, though. 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4 and 7/4 are included.
Advanced Drumming - Progressive rock and some fusion in 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8 and 12/8
Crazy Drumming - Zappa-style grooves in wierd tine sigs 3/8, 11/8, 13/8, 15/8, 17/8, 13/16 and 19/16. Not suitable for dance music.
FourFour Drumming - Only 4/4 but with polyrhythms and quirks
FourFour Drumming 2 - More 4/4, a little bit on the straighter side of things.
The Fill Pack - Over 900 fills!
The MIDI mappings are I-MAP, General MIDI, EZ/Superior Drummer, Steven Slate Drums and Addictive Drums - all are included in this offer.
We are still working on converting all grooves to I-MAP, and I expect this to be finished early next week. So until then we put up a sign-up page where you can enter your contact info and we will get back to you when the I-MAP conversion is finished. The offer is valid until January 15, and this should give you enough time to play around with the grooves together with all those new drum kits.
Oh, I almost forgot. We offer a 30-day money-back guarantee so you risk absolutely nothing. If you don't like the grooves, you get your money back. Simple as that.
Signup, sound clips and more info can be found here:
http://www.oddgrooves.com/GB_upgrade.html
Remember, this is exclusive to participants of this Group Buy, and the offer is valid until January 15.
Cheers,
Per

Any news yet about whether those impulse responses will work outside Kontakt?Squids wrote:Great questions. I will have to answer this in detail later. The first answer is that we're going to have a selection of MT kits that are the MT versions of kits in this GB only (not from the whole range... this is only $99 - you know better!). But the choices will be of NDV Premier MT, NDV Gretsch MT, JB Sonor MT kit and maybe one other one like the Blasticks kit.blueman wrote:Squids, a few questions please:
Which MT kit(s) will we be selecting from? Can it be any kit from the DM2 library?Squids wrote:(4) as ANOTHER bonus for reaching 500 you can have yet another Drum Masters Multitrack Kit.
1. How many?Squids wrote: (7) Impulse Responses -- Convolution ambience from various world class studios these drums have been recorded in.
2. Will there be included info on how and where these were recorded (mics, rooms, preamps, eq)? It's helpful to have descriptions of the spaces like: large, small, ambient, dry, stone surface, wood floor, etc. etc.
These Impulse Responses may be considered an extra but they are a big reason why I joined this GB! I have LOTS and LOTS of kits including, many drum libraries from other companies. These convolutions (esp. for the dry kits) will prove VERY useful and I'm really looking forward to hearing them
3. Will these Impulse Responses be accessible outside of Kontakt (IP)?
Yes! This is a priority for me. I felt it was a missing piece in DM1 (last 2 group buys) along with the video demonstrations. Right now, I have to wait for everything to load in IP, run through several midi loops, tweak, rinse and repeat just to see if the sounds are going to work in context. No biggie but time consuming and a potential flow killer when you're writing music.Squids wrote: Mp3s demos of each of the kits for easy auditioning of the default kit sounds.
These forthcoming mp3 demos would cut A LOT of that time out by giving me instant access to the basic tones (in use) so I can review and check if they will fit the track before investing too much time. Invaluable! Thank you and please remember to create these in the midst of all of this manic mayhem!![]()
Ok, I'm already asking for too much at the $99 price point (sorry) but hey! I'm a salesman too DaveAs much as you like to see the big numbers on these GBs (well, we all do!
) I like to see the insane deals get as insane as possible (and then some) so it's a win/win all around

Ooooooooh, you've got to do Matt's drums and grooves once, and I can't see anyone more suitable for the "weird and wonderful Squid's collection No 3" than Jon Brion. He's a monster (and so is Chamberlain, of course).Squids wrote:Yes, Matt Chamberlain (besides having a cool name) is a fantastic drummer. I went to the GB_upgrade page & filled in the form.
I then (strangely) rec'd an email from me with the form's text "Yes, I want to save BIG by taking advantage of OddGrooves' upgrade offer!
Please let me know when the products are ready to ship".
Is that what's supposed to happen?
