If you want of course simple lines, then yeah, a virtual bass will suffice and will sound good, I guess. But if you have some riffs that use the same note several times in a row (16ths at 112 bpm for example) it will never sound good. ALWAYS like a machine, no matter what. Scarbee Prebass was going to be my salvation with the alternated fingering, but nope. I am still trying with Trillian, but haven't had the time (from the videos you can tell at least that is VERY promising with the alternation of samples to make a bass line not sound like a machine). A yamaha Bb414 or something will do you a lot better. They are kinda cheap. Ok, maybe you didn't ask for this much rambling, but if I knew better then I wouldn't have wasted a looot of time. Manybass is nice though...
did you understand the question? GR4 and VBA are bass amplifier sims, so it's common to plug a bass DI'd into your machine just as you suggest and then use the amp sim to get a mic'ed bass amp sound. Neither are virtual basses or samples.

Here's an example of one here, you needn't listen to the whole song (unless of course you want to, which I recommend). The bass is very pronounced when it first comes in and you can get a good idea of how it sounds. I'm curious as to what you think of the sound.

correction, GR4 really is a guitar amp sim with a bass model, I think POD Farm and Waves GTR3.5 both have better bass amp sims than GR4

i didnt like either, i have a tube bass pre i normally use but if im on a laptop i use the line6 stuff, much better imo.

Lately I'm sticking with my Axe-Fx (INCREDIBLE) but I grew up on a solid state Ampeg and GR4 bass amp sim nails that sound IMO. If you need more vintage tone with some hair around the edges but don't want to lose punch, try using a guitar tube amp sim and then layering in a DIed signal.

Granted, it SEEMS I didn't understand the question, but if you re read the first thing I recommend Virtual Bass Amp. It's just I tried to use those sims with the vst instruments I mentioned, and they sucked. Again, one was noisy as hell, the other just mudded the audio signal. Of course, if it works for you something, more power to ya!

I listened to the song, and indeed is a very nice one. Yeah, the bass sounds very nice, but for me it doesn't sound as a real bass, nevertheless, it doesn't matter how I percieve it, because indeed sounds very nice and fits the song very well. The bass has body and of course has "real" characteristics, and cuts through the mix very well. It carries the song as it should. And yeah, I listened to the whole song... TWICE. And I say it doesn't sound like a real bass just because it sounds too PRISTINE and PRETTY and PERFECT, like if you concentrated on making a GREAT loop and repeated where needed. If it's real, sorry!

I guess I got carried a little too much away, and spilt the beans quite a lot of what I was thinking.

So, in other words to the OP, get Virtual Bass Amp (seems you already have a bass).

And to the guy with a Axe-Fx... well, it MUST be a hella of a hardware because everyone at the PEtrucci forum have been going crazy about it (the ULTRA), I think even the Owner of the site has one as well.

I'll have to play with the GR4 one and see what is up with that. Ampeg svx is really cpu hoggy, and vba is a bit better (cpu wise) but it's a nice unit with a certain instant gratification vibe going for it.

thanx Peter, but tbh the song is not new. The last couple of years life has been kicking me in the nads...but that was last decade and it's time to look forward. I also am finishing up an animation (trippy) for that song which will be cool I use fractal art I make and twist them up in Magix MEP and Sony Vegas Movie

Ive tried VBA, Ampeg and GR4

Studio Devil Virtual Bass Amp is definitely the best sounding. The sounds are decent without having to tweak anything too much. I have active electronics on my bass. Ampeg is ok but just doesn't quite have the sound quality, very good good though. Guitar Rig just doesn't feel right at all, sounds like the bass models were added as an afterthought. I only use that for 6 strings.

Virtual Bass amp does seem to take more cpu power to run. It has really nice effects also. It just seems like the developers spent alot of time on it. I'm totally happy with the sound. If I have a ton of stuff going on in the song, then I'd use the ampeg for more efficient cpu and use vba for mixdown.

I recently downloaded the demo for the audiffex gallien krueger emulation and it sounds great, without being too compressed. Better to my ears than the studio devil - haven't dried guitarrig. The Audiffex Gallien Krueger demo has a nagging popup and will only allow you to use presets, but then it has no noisebursts or dropouts so you can actually play the thing before deciding, and the presets are pretty versatile.

To the one above me. That cheap bass sounds good enough. Where it matters to have a very good instrument is in the guitar department.

I was just randomly browsing the forum when I found this post and I gotta say..
The Audiffex Gallien Krueger sim's really pretty, pretty, pretty good.
Great response, great smooth sound, without tending to rumble, or getting uncomfortable, unless you want it to (but still in a very realistic way).
In my opinion even the demo's far better than anything else out there, including Ampeg, Studio Devil and GR.
