Reason 5 is on its way with a load of cool new stuff as well, so its bonus time when that comes about as well.
How do you know its on way. Have they announced anything?
I'm sure too that Reason 5 it's on the way. One reason because "Reason" now has a "New lower price!". They try to sell more before Reason 5 comes.
Propellerheads have a team dedicated working on an update to Reason right now.

I DLd Reason demo and Record demo... I used to do everything in Reason some years back. Looked at Reason, pretty much the same, although they added some things that I had created workarounds for then, which was nice. Decided I would just run Record if I had both, after a few hours. Which... made me wonder why they didn't just merge the two, and make it Reason? Hmmm, marketing I suspect. Then after a few more hours, I remembered why I switched to Logic... Switch to Rack... switch to sequencer... back to rack... back to mixer... back to rack... etc. etc. Not to mention, does one really need to see all that interface all the time? Even if you fold the instruments and tracks, it's an eyefull! I like Reason, and I could still use it without any learning curve, but when you realize you need Reason to make Record cool (instruments) and Record to make Reason cool... it's what you would pay for a good DAW. Then you need refills...

If they added something really interesting to Reason 5 like Recycle... that might change the picture, but come to think of it, they should have just added Recycle to Reason anyway and that would have solved the Audio problem nicely!

Have you tried Presonous Studio One and if so, how do you feel it compares with Record as far as work flow is concerned?

TIA

Yes. Nice interface, and everything is there... but at the price, I think they missed an opportunity to break into a crowded market with already established players. I think the direction XT2 is going is more what the market needs. A stripped down "only the functions you need" approach for those that don't want or need all the stuff offered by the big 3. Then you have an alternative, or more importantly a 2 product approach... One for quick ideas, one for complex arrangements etc. XT2 is just a couple features short of all I need... But my needs are simple :)

Combinations of function keys show any or all of the screens ie. F5 and F6 shows mixer and rack, F5 and F7 shows sequencer and mixer.

works well, you can click on the seq/rack buttons on the mixer to show where they are on the other screen.

After using Reason for 2 years... I'm aware of the function keys :) The issue with me is I shouldn't have to go back to the rack, just to change a preset in an instrument. That's leftover from when the sequencer and rack could not be separated! Really difficult to search for a sound while previewing your arrangement? Unless of course you keep everything on the screen at once, which is pretty tough to do...

 I have no idea what you are talking about. You can play the arrangement and change the sound, it still plays. Makes sense to me that the preset browser would be on the device, like most vst's have it.

I have recently been using the demo and take back what I said about Record. I think it's the best sounding option for mixing ITB. I hope the upcoming Slate virtual console thing will be this good so I can stay completely in Logic though.

I agree with DHR53 that it would be nice at least to have the choice. I suspect that if MIDI out is implemented then this will be added into the sequencer too, as a patch browsing field would be necessary for MIDI tracks anyway.

It's funny how many of us are now swallowing our previous words

The mixer is indeed superb, but I really can't get over just HOW good the timestretch is. We're really talking "next-generation": production quality results even with big tempo changes. It's in a whole different league to the Elastique Pro (Ableton, Reaper, etc) and iZotope Radius (Audition, Sonar) timestretch that I am used to. They have raised the bar so significantly here that it will be interesting to see how zPlane, iZotope etc respond...

Not trying to be the wise ass or anything, but how does that differ from Logic? Aren't you constantly switching screensets, from midi to arrange to sample editor to midi to arrange etc. etc. ? Even if you set up a screen (or use the docked windows) with arrange view and mixer.. there's nothing stopping you from doing that in Record, is there? Logic's screensets are a lot more powerful, but you still end up hitting function key constantly.

I think you're not giving it enough effort. You seem to have ignored the instrument window as well, which is a much faster way to go to instruments and effects, not to mention opening an instrument from the arrange view (if it has a track). I edit instruments as much in Record as I did in Logic. In both cases it involves clicking somewhere to open the plugin/instrument/effect. I really can't see the difference in effort? :?

Of course, to each his own! I guess it just doesn't suit you.
