That makes sense. Still, I figure it's better to head off any possibility that they'd get a bunch of stuff that they had to ignore. However unlikely (I hope) that possibility is.

so is this a private thing between dr sync and ew, that hasnt been made public yet...? why nothing on the NI site or an NI link or something..or is it too soon?

It didn't have to do with the NI forums or site, but stuff that had happened on KVR. Eric's posting makes it public. I'm pretty sure nobody at NI would've done this if it had meant involving whoever works on the Website, etc. A quick freebie, that's all.

No. As Meffy stated earlier, he'd asked about the legality of redistributing SynC Modular; I said I'd write Vadim about it. What you're seeing here is the result of a month of sporadic emails between Vadim, Meffy and myself.

Vadim still owns the rights to SynC Modular; the question was whether this would violate his agreement with NI upon being hired to do Reaktor development. Evidently, the legal team and the powers that be at NI gave him a green light to redistribute as freeware.

Just so. I exchanged emails mostly with others at NI, not developers but businessfolk / legal staffers (not sure who is what). It required the combined goodwill and generosity of many people to make this gift possible, and though I've thanked them in emails I'll do it again here. Good show.

It's old software anyway...prob as Reaktor 6 will knock everyone for six perhaps they thought it was time to release it as a freebie.

Good idea - NI will get more customers for Reaktor doing this

I have Reaktor anyway - so there is no point in having this?
Perhaps good software for use in university classes in modular synthesis - they like good free software

Yeah Thanks to Eric, Meffy, Vadim and all the Ni staff for that and the time they spent on it to offer all of us the freebie

Freebie looks great also, though I dont know if it can be that usefull for those who already own Reaktor or a non Dxi host. But certainly a powerfull unit seeing the specs.

It depends what you're trying to do. As a tool for learning DSP I think SynC might still have the edge in some ways. But the latest version of Reaktor is undoubtedly more powerful, with a larger library. There are some great ensembles available for SynC however. The yahoo group has lots of stuff in the files area: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/syncmodular/

It is old, but there's a pretty dedicated following despite that. I think this will be mostly of use to people interested in running on older machines, those into historical music software (it's a biggie), and people who invested a lot of time into building ensembles (is that the right term for SynC?).

For owners of Reaktor it might prove an interesting trip down Memory Lane, don't have time to try it so I don't know.
