maybe I'm just clueless what preamp is supposed to be doing, but I can barely hear a difference when I use it on various material. Only the "harsh" settings with distortion seem to have any noticeable effect.

Glich, you took the words right outta my mouth. I'm certainly no expert, but this is way to subtle. And when you can actually here it working, it's not a sound I would ever want. I'm sure someone will reply saying I don't know what I'm talking about, and they might be right. But if I can't here it, what's the point of using it.
