Howdy folks -

I'm looking to find any samples or sample libraries (pay or free) of animal horn "calls". Shofar, and counch shells would be cool too. Anyone have any ideas?

Cheers
Carl

There are some shell calls in Sounds of Polynesia (available for download from Zero-G), but I'm not sure if it would be worth buying the whole library for them.

Bela D has a war horn that is made from an animal horn. It's in the Celtic Winds anthology. It is also available separately to registered Bela D users.

thanks - I'll listen to the Shofar horn. The granular-ized conch doesn't fit my production; I do need the more classic hunting horn calls.
The Celtic horn looks interesting - I wish I had a Bela-D library but for some reason I have never bought from them. I'll look more closely at the entire library to see if I can use the other components.

Anyone else? where are all those ram's horns! LOL.

Have you tried the Freesound project? I would have thought that might have some since I suspect you don't want to spend several hundred pounds/dollars on ethnic libraries to pick up the odd conch horn!

Whenever you find what you're looking for, please post back. I'd like to see the conclusion.

I was under the impression that the granularized conch also had natural samples of the shell, but I am on deep water here (pun intended), as I never heard one, I just knew about the patch. :)

As for flutes of bones and horns, "Early Patches" has a consort of Gemshorns (which sound more like flutes), and "Banchetto Musicale" has a signal horn. I just ordered Banchetto, so I cant speak for quality, but I do own Early Patches, and I find it very good indeed. As I understand it, Banchetto has even better quality, and for me their consort of Krummhorns is worth half the price. (Btw.. its on sale for two more days)

Check out www.soundbytes.de for some very inspiring sounds.

Actually, whilst I'm thinking about it... it's a shame that Herman Witkam disbanded his RAW ethnic instrurments pages, as that had a very nice Midwinterhorn on it which would have been right up your alley and was free too.

Not entirely helpful, but if Herman ever Googles his own name, he might see this and have a think!

+1.
http://www.freesound.org/searchText.php and enter "conch" instead of counch. The snailhorn sample could be very useful...

LOL - wow I can't even spell "conch"! Actually the conch is not getting there for me, but this shofar is exactly what I want - this recording is distorted beyond help, but hits the mark perfectly.

thanks for pointing to freesound, I forgot about them. There is a fairly good "shophar" there - sjofar.wav (how many ways are there to spell 'shofar'?)
If I pitch this down a bit it should be passable.
Also I haven't converted in Kontakt the gigasampler set of the Shofar mentioned earlier in the thread and that indeed may also do the trick.

I didn't find anything else that met my "hunting horn" idea on freesound - there are some brass fanfares but not what I need.

I'm not too surprised that there isn't a bunch of professional level recording libs of just these "animal horn" calls. I have some large SFX collections and didn't find it there either... But I thank you all for the pointers.

Maybe the MircoHammer folks will take pity on me in the next few weeks and record a shofar!!

carl (now looking for his old freesound login)
