I need an additional HD to add to my rig to store all my sample libraries and VI libraries. I've heard USB is not fast enough to handle things such as Omnisphere (not sure if that is true or not). Any truth to that?

Is Firewire the way to go or will USB do? Also, what about an internal drive for speed? Are they a better option?

BTW: I'm on a MAC :)

THANKS

If you can use a secondary internal drive, it's always a better option.

I use a usb2 1tb western digital elements for sample libraries and video editing and have had no problems....

Never ran into a sample library that an external USB drive couldn't handle, but if you have space for an internal, that would be the way to go.

i bought a FW 800 LaCie HD exactly for that function, but I also believe that a USB2 HD may be enough for the job.
On the contrary of Eduardo, I prefer an external HD for this kind of job, just because, if I have to change computer, this critical material will not need to be transferred (although you may very well take the HD and install it on the new computer, as long as it's compatible).
However, if you need to take you libraries elsewhere (for example to finish a production in another studio) an external HD is way easier.

I was reading this today. It speaks about Fast Hard Drives not being enough in themselves. You may find some interest in it!

Isn't DFD an NI-only utility?

As far as know . . . yes! :) The OP wrote 'I need an additional HD to add to my rig to store all my sample libraries'. He didn't state which Sampler but quite a lot of people around here use Kontakt. Since I had read the PDF just today myself, it was in my mind, and I thought it might be of value!
