INTERVALS


Articulation:

The singer sustains a tone without vibrato for approximately 2 seconds, and then slides up to a specified interval, holds that note for approximately 1 second and then fades in vibrato that is held for 2 seconds.

This articulation is performed in four different intervals for each of three vowels.
The intervals are:
Minor 3rd,
Major 3rd,
Perfect 5th,
8th (Octave)
The vowels are: Ah, Oh and Oo.


Patches:

Each articulation is available in a single patch (eg Ah 5th) as well as various convenient groupings. (Eg Ah Intervals All KS).

Group patches use keyswitching to move from one performance to another.

Group patches include:

Ah Intervals All KS Keyswitch between 4 intervals in Ah
Oh Intervals All KS Keyswitch between 4 intervals in Oh
Oo Intervals All KS Keyswitch between 4 intervals in Oo

STACCATO


Articulation:

The singer attacks and holds a note for around half a second, with an abrupt cut-off.
The vowels are: Ah, Ee, Oh and Oo.

Patches:

Each articulation is available in a single patch (eg Ah Staccato) as well as various convenient groupings. (eg Ah Ee Oh Oo Stacc – KS).

Patches with the letters ‘KS’ in the title (eg Ah Ee Oh Oo Stacc – KS) use keyswitching to move from one vowel type to another.

Patches with the letters ‘RT’ in the title (eg Ah Staccato with RT) use release triggered samples. In the staccato patches, the RT samples are the original room ambience of each sample that you would normally only hear if you played the sample to its end. Using release triggers allows very short notes to be played which also seem to ‘open up’ into the real room. Patches are provided with and without release triggers, for those who would prefer to apply their own ambience. These can also be a polyphony saver, as instruments using release triggered samples often momentarily double their voice usage -upon key release both the main sample and the release triggered sample may be sounding simultaneously – so that a region normally using two voices briefly engages four.

Patches with the letters ‘XF’ in the title (eg Ah Ee Oh Oo Stacc – XF) use the modulation wheel to mix between a number of different articulations. For example, in the case of ‘Ah Oh Oo Stacc – XF’, with the modulation wheel at 0 level, you will hear the Ah vowel sung, as you move the wheel ‘up’, the Ah vowel will begin to fade out as the Oh vowel fades in. At about mid point on the modulation wheel, Ah is no longer audible and Oh is at full level, as you move the wheel further forward, Oh will begin to fade out as Oo fades in. Remember when you play a key in a crossfade patch that you are triggering ALL the samples in the patch at the same time. I.e. if the patch crossfades between Ah Oh and Oo samples, each time you strike a key you are playing all three samples simultaneously. It is the crossfade utility that basically mixes the level of the samples you don’t hear to zero. You may not hear them, but the sample playback engine is streaming them anyway so that at any time you can move your modulation wheel and hear that layer fade up again. Crossfade patches are very useful, but you just have to remember that they also require more than the usual voice count.

The ‘Layer’ instruments simply stack all the nominated patches so that they sound simultaneously. Unsurprisingly, this can turn a single vocal performance into a thick ensemble.


STRAIGHT TONE & DELAYED VIBRATO


Articulation:

This Instrument includes two performance styles.

1. Straight Tone – the soloist holds a note without vibrato for approximately eight seconds.

2. Delayed Vibrato – the soloist holds a straight tone for a specified length of time and then fades in a full vibrato which is maintained until the note is cut off.

Both Straight Tone and Delayed Vibrato articulations are performed in three vowels – Ah, Oh and Oo.

The delayed vibrato articulation is delivered with three lengths of straight tone prior to the onset of vibrato – 1 second, 2 seconds and four seconds.

The 1 second delayed vibrato uses a looped vibrato portion, which allows us to crossfade this patch with a looped straight tone to achieve a ‘user defined’ delay time. A straight tone can be sustained indefinitely and cross-faded into a vibrato tone at any point.


Patches:

Each articulation is available in a single patch (eg Ah Staccato) as well as various convenient groupings. (eg Ah Oh Oo 1s DV – KS).

Patches with the letters ‘KS’ in the title (eg Ah Oh Oo 1s DV – KS) use keyswitching to move from one vowel type to another.

Patches with the letters ‘DV’ in the title (eg Ah Oh Oo 1s DV – KS) are sourced from the delayed vibrato articulation.

Patches with the word ‘Loop’ (eg Ah Straight Looped) or abbreviation ‘lp’ (eg Ah Straights Layer Lp/Lp) in the title is sourced from looped samples.

Patches with the word ‘Unlooped’ in the title (eg Ah 4s Delayed Vibrato Unlooped) are sourced from unlooped samples

Most* patches with the word ‘Straight’ in the title (eg Ah Straight Unlooped) are sourced from the straight tone performance.

*Some patches use the straight tone section of the four seconds delayed vibrato performance, rather than the eight second straight tone performance. These patches have the acronym ‘DV’ preceding the word ‘straight’ (eg Ah DV Straight Looped). This ‘straight tone’ sound is particularly suited to cross fading with the 1-second vibrato patch, as both sample sets are from different moments of the same performance.

Patches with the letters ‘XF’ in the title (eg Ah XF Straight & Vib Switch mw) use the modulation wheel to mix between a number of different articulations. Patches with the word ‘slider’ in the title (eg Ah XF 2 Straights mw Vibrato ) are FX patches, using layers of vowels which auto pitch bend into tune.

Patches with the term ‘mw lfo’ the title (eg Ah Slider mw lfo) use a synthesizer lfo to generate vibrato whose depth is based on modulation wheel position.

We’ve tried to keep the naming on the patches self explanatory, but we also wanted you to be able to read the name when the patch is loaded in a slot. As a result, some of the more complex patches have ended up with pretty cryptic abbreviations

Some abbreviation examples…

Ah Oh Oo Strt Lyr lp/lp – KS
This patch includes the Ah, Oh and Oo vowels.
It uses straight tones (Strt) layered (Lyr) for each vowel. This would be the standard straight tone, as well as the looped four-second straight tone section of the delayed vibrato performance.
Both sets of straight tone samples for each vowel are looped. (lp/lp)
The patch uses keyswitching (KS) to change from Ah layered straights, to Oh layered straights to Oo layered straights.


Ah Oh Oo Strt Lyr unlp/lp – KS
This patch is virtually identical, but uses the complete unlooped straight tone sample layered with the looped straight tone excerpt from the delayed vibrato performance – hence the unlp/lp reference.

Ah Oh Oo XF Strt/Vib sw mw – KS
This patch uses the three vowels.
For each vowel there is a crossfade (XF) between Straight tone (Strt) and Vibrato tone (Vib), using the modulation wheel (mw). In this case, the crossfade is abrupt – hence the switch reference (sw). You can choose the vowel you need with keyswitching (KS).

Ah Oh Oo XF Strt/Vib Mix mw – KS
This patch is similar to the one described above, with the difference that the crossfade range is wider – hence the mix reference (Mix).

Ah Oh Oo Strt/Vib sw at – KS
Also similar to the switching (sw) crossfade (XF) described earlier, but in this instance instead of the controller being the modulation wheel (mw), we use keyboard pressure, or channel aftertouch (at). Again, keyswitches choose the vowel.

Ah Oh Oo XF Strt/Vib Mix2 at – KS
A variation on the Mix patch, the difference being that whereas the ‘mix’ patch crossfade range is about 10% of the overall controller throw, Mix 2’s crossfade range is closer to 50%, resulting in a wider ‘ensemble’ area in which you hear a mix of both the straight and vibrato patches.

Ah Oh Oo XF 2 Strt mw Vib – KS
This patch is more of an fx patch, and uses the modulation wheel to crossfade between 3 articulations. Two of the articulations are the looped straight tone and the looped straight section of the delayed vibrato performance. These are layered. The modulation wheel cross fades between this layer and the 1 second delayed vibrato patch, which is also looped. There are three significant areas in the modulation wheel’s travel. At the beginning, there is very little of the vibrato patch, but the two straight layers are evenly mixed. As the wheel is moved up, more of the vibrato patch is mixed in. A subtle but increasing amount of lfo controlled vibrato is also added to one of the two straight tones, adding to the ensemble effect. At the middle of its travel, the modulation wheel mixes all three patches more or less evenly. Once past about two thirds of its travel, the straight tones begin to fade and eventually leave the vibrato patch lonely and exposed…

Ah Oh Oo Slider mw lfo - KS
This is definitely an FX patch, using a layer of two straight tones, one of which is auto bending (for one second) into tune from a distance of a tone below concert pitch. The modulation wheel introduces synthetic vibrato. Keyswitch between vowel choices.

Ah Oh Oo Slider XF Vibrato – KS
Similar to the previous slider patch, but instead of synthetic vibrato, the modulation wheel fades in a true vibrato performance layer. As usual, keyswitch between vowel choices.
