The main point for me was: "will it give me something I don't have?" The answer is definitely yes:
- the randomization options make even the simplest beat come alive with just a few clicks. Feeding Tattoo into other plugins like Battery using random beats is easy as pie and leads to great results.
- The sounds are not anything you've never heard before, but there's quite a bit of flexibility to them. Using the built-in compressor should give enough ooomph to the sounds to satisfy even the deafest of the deaf.
- I can get very fast results with it, and it's fun to use. If I need a really quick'n'dirty setup with which to improvise or build a new track, I always use Tattoo now instead of microtonic.
That said, there is still a hitch when using it in Reaper, and setting up uneven measures is unnecessarily complicated. The GUI is a bit too small for my taste, as well. But overall, it was a very good purchase, and I use it on a daily basis.

Is the sound quality comparable to microtonic? I suppose thats down to the quality of the presets but either way do they/it sound as good.

Could anyone tell me if tattoo supports program change ? I haven't found any mention of that in the manual - and I haven't bought the plug yet. Chris was I guess to busy to answer this question asked a few days ago, so...
Microtonic hasn't that ability (unlike synplant), and I would personnaly dream of having program change implemented for a future version of microtonic.

As far as I can tell it doesn't.hangars liquides wrote:Could anyone tell me if tattoo supports program change ? I haven't found any mention of that in the manual - and I haven't bought the plug yet. Chris was I guess to busy to answer this question asked a few days ago, so...

Microtonic sounds a bit better to me. But the sequencer in Tattoo is awesome and I love the randomize functions!Rod Staples wrote:Is the sound quality comparable to microtonic? I suppose thats down to the quality of the presets but either way do they/it sound as good.

To me ease of use is one of the most important features of VST's, I'm too lazy for tough learning-curves. In that respect Tattoo is really great, intuitive. I do have microtonic as well, but one of the great things of Tattoo is the single grid for drum programming, combined with the wonderful randomization features.

Hey I just bought this thing. How do u get the internal sequencer to play the next pattern? Luv it btw.

Tattoo is great
The patterns are numbered across the bottom of the GUI, click one to change to the next pattern at the end of the current pattern. You can also use MIDI notes C3 and up to change patterns from a sequencer or keyboard.
Peace,
Andy.

I've asked about program change to the developer on his blog and his reply was:shamann wrote:As far as I can tell it doesn't.hangars liquides wrote:Could anyone tell me if tattoo supports program change ? Then i've explained more to him what i mean for program change but he didn't replied..."If, by "program," you mean "pattern," then yes. If by "program" you mean "preset," that's up to your host.
Each preset has 16 patterns, and these can be switched by MIDI notes C3-D#4. If you're using this in Live, you've got to remember that the pattern switch needs to get hit before the 1, as it switches on the 1. So doing it with clips isn't the easiest thing in the world. But if you're just switching it live with a little keyboard or whatever, it'll work like any other drum machine in that regard."

Assuming I understand you correctly, I'd say that the answer has already been given. Changing programs is not something Tattoo can do by itself; to accomplish that, you'll have to consult your host's manual, because each host has a different way of going about this. Some may not even be capable of it, I don't know.raikard233 wrote: Then i've explained more to him what i mean for program change but he didn't replied...

@raikard233: The question is what you want to achieve? Changing a preset in Tattoo only changes the drumkit, but that kills the current active patterns. Since Tattoo can't be programmed by MIDI clips changing a preset is pretty pointless anyways. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I assumed what you were asking was does it respond to MIDI program change messages, which usually changes presets when implemented. Tattoo doesn't. I'm sure many hosts might be configured to change hosts with program change messages. But like bM3w said, kits and sequences aren't separated in Tattoo, a program change message likely wouldn't do much good.raikard233 wrote:I've asked about program change to the developer on his blog and his reply was:

What i need is simply changing the synth preset and not the patterns...well, if both could be changed at the same time could be better for what i've saw from the tattoo internal sequencer and modulator.shamann wrote:I assumed what you were asking was does it respond to MIDI program change messages, which usually changes presets when implemented. In ableton live you can send midi program change messages, i can have a midi clip empty, without notes but with a program change stored into it...so when it's read all the synth parameters will be changed reading the assigned preset.
Now if tattoo can change both synth preset and sequence would be really great.
Consider you're doing a live set in session view of ableton live, you have different songs in the vertical timeline, you can switch from a kit+pattern to another kit+pattern when you launch a new midi clip where a different program change is stored.
I can do that in live with Zebra and Synplant, i have 20 different songs in a single live set (session view) without using a single audio sample/loop. All midiclips with program change and synths.
What i need is a drumsynth that is capable of the same thing.
I've got that patterns can be changed via midi notes...but what i need is changing the synth preset.
I hope that i've explained well what i mean.

You obviously did not understand: you can not change patterns via MIDI programm change nor can you create MIDI clips, which hold your patterns. Tattoo's presets basically hold the individual drum kits (sounds), not patterns!
