i love the implication that the guy producing the track should be a keyboard player grade 5, sax player, bass player, qualified engineer, know all about stem mixing techniques, mastering, music theory, synth programming.

sounds like a super musician to me or maybe Prince !

i do see the op point, but i also think alot of musicians are not in bands, alot stuggle and i think any work is better than none, but i also see in most credits that any musicians are mentioned i dont think producers intentionally let people believe that they played all instruments and created the track from the start.

i mean look at R+B the singer is the focus, do they play keys, bass, programme drums, compress, master etc some may do but alot wont, and im sure you will see alot of different muscians involved in the credits on these tracks.

well, I am a bass player foremost and can program some pretty mean B-Lines but.

really it's so much easier to just play the lines on my trusty old fender (funk) jazz bass, all the little ghost notes, mutes, and grooves just never capture with programming the way playing does.

(here comes the plug) I have done lots of sessions for various house producers including joey negro and some forum members here and what I usually do is they send me a bassless mp3 and I record 2 versions of a bass groove one busy one not and they chop it up in ableton, etc.

so I think a lot of soul house producers have a bunch of cool guys at hand to record at short notice and then just get on with producing and promoting the music, coz lets face it thats the biggest part of the process.

Producer = one who produces.
Either you have the talent or your find the talent.

I've got a recording engineering degree, I play guitar and bass and I know how to arrange and compose and arrange. When I'm playing a recording session.
1. I expect to be paid.
2. I expect a producer with a plan. If He want's me to diddle all day see rule one. I don't care how much or little money he thinks he's gonna make I want mine now.
3. I don't come in as a composer, arranger and musician all though I can do all three. He'd better have a score, If I have to transcribe an existing piece of audio that is extra. See rule one.

There is a huge difference between producer as music writer and producer as collaborator. Many producers who write music find others to produce for them while when they collaborate with an 'Act' the primary goal is to bring life back to something that someone has already worked out. As a producer you'd better have a damn good engineering ear and be able to direct engineers on their level. If you don't and its crap then it was your failure to communicate the idea not the engineers fault for not reading your mind.

Being a musical director means directing musicians. Musicians take direction better when the director has the competency to relay the information correctly.

well put indeed, im having piano lessons, and essentially want to be able to play arrange and produce a track, ive had lessons for only 2 years and i dont think ill be able to do anything amazing anytime soon, im just sheet reading music at the moment, but i would like to be able to play this type of music (soulful) gopsel what ever you want to call it, i dont mind how the end result is reached, but for me i just want to be able to do it myself and not rely on anyone else, i know amazing keys when i hear it but i want to learn it and understand it, i think im a long way off but everyone starts somewhere
