Hmmm, that's funny, I don't remember Apple ever being hauled up before any monopolies commissions.

But wait- yes, yes, it's coming back to me now: Microsoft was. More than once, if I remember correctly.

Talk about a reality distortion field...

+ ipad = multitouch mackie control emulation.

also, i'm really hoping apple or 3rd party provide a way to mirror a computer on same network (or wired).... being able to use ipad as a touchscreen for another computer would be excellent.
Check out Jaadu VNC (€19.99). I use it on my iPhone. Navigating a 30" (Apple) monitor on the phone isn't actually as daunting as I first feared. But using it on an iPad means I won't have to get out of bed to go to work anymore. :)

I have no idea what relevance this has. But yes, Microsoft were "hauled up" because they bundle their web browser with their OS. Something Apple wouldn't do I presume? Oh hang on, yes they do.

dont you get it? if Microsoft, the software company, are a monopoly, then Apple, the 'portable entertainment devices' company cant be. Ever. Okay. Shaddap now.

Hmm, actually I could see myself having quite a lot of use for something like this as an elecronic book/article reader, since I read quite a lot of academic articles as pdf's. I'll probably wait for other manufactures providing cheaper alternatives, though.

BTW, made the mistake of checking out Apple's ridiculous advertising video. Apple sure know how to make the most repulsive videos. The funniest part was when they were hyping how great it is to watch movies on: "This is an UNBELIEVABLE device for watching video. The user interface we built for this is just fun. When you see something, you touch it with your finger and it starts playing, there's no delay! [...] You can double tap and fill the whole screen!"

As an example they're showing Pixar's Up. Yeah, when you're watching 2 hour films, the FUN user interface with no delay is clearly a much bigger asset than a big screen, good sound or comfortable watching position!

It's probably not going to make your pdf-reading experience very much more magical. Pdfs don't very often require multi touch either.
I'm more inclined to agree that it might be useable as a control surface for a daw, but then again I was really excited about the kaoss pad but the truth is it really really sucks to control a daw from a pad. You grab wrong faders all the time because most of the time you have to look at where the interesting things are, which is in your daw.

Does it display PDFs anyway, or just the aforementioned .epub format?

Regarding watching movies, this device is apparently not HD ready. Yikes - launching a video product in 2010 without it being HD ready seems brave, not cutting-edge. Also because the device is not widescreen, you'll get a reduced viewing area with nice black stripes above and below.

The other big drawbacks are of course the inability to multitask: so you can't drag across text from your epub document to quote in a text document or email, for example. No more copying chunks of wikipedia into your homework

And without Flash, is it right to assume many websites won't display correctly??

If the above is definitely correct this seems like a very lame product indeed, and I actually doubt it will be the success they hope for.

[fanboi]Yeah but the NEXT version will multitask and serious websites will convert.[/fanboi]

Who was talking about a magical reading experience? I just simply want to read them in a comfortable position on a couch or in my bed, like a book - something a laptop is no good for. Multitouch could also be handy for making notes. Of course, printing them out and reading the paper is even better, but I have to read so much material constantly that I prefer not to print it all out...

"iTampon"? Well that's just a complete and utter misunderstanding of the entire dynamic, ain't it?

"iKotex" or "iMaxiPad" would have been no less funny and far more relevant.
