Let's take a look to the C Triad chord, taken from Cmaj scale.

To find it I'll pick the Tonic = C, then the 3rd = E, next the 5th = G: C E G.

Which one should I pick next to find the often used Cmaj open chord?

If I pick the 7th note from the scale it gives me a B when it should be a C (5th string).

Should I pick the 8th note of the scale, instead?

Thanks in advance :)

Hello my friends

I need an aspirin...my head is aching with so many scales, chords, notes, etc :)

I've done some research and what I got was: if you want to find all notes (not only the triad) of a major chord, first you have to find the triad notes from the Root, 3rd and 5th of the major scale (which defines only 3 strings in the guitar). For the remaining strings, you just have to repeat the same triads notes.

The same rule applies for the 4th note of a scale, that gives a 7th chord because this note comes from the 7th note of the scale.

The same for the 9th chords: after finding the triad notes, you must find the 7th scale note, add it to the chord, and then you can find the 9th note of the scale and add it to the scale.

Rules:

Major triads: Scale Root / 3rd scale note / 5th scale note

Major 7th chord: Scale Root / 3rd scale note / 5th scale note / 7th scale note

Major 0th chord: Scale Root / 3rd scale note / 5th scale note / 7th scale note / 9th scale note

These are my conclusions. I haven't seen this written anywhere so I don't know if this is correct. Is it? :?

I think your rules are right. A couple more tips, when you're running short of strings/fingers:

In the maj7 and maj9 chords, the 5th is the least important note (because its partials are similar to the partials of the root) and can be omitted.

If you're playing the chords in an ensemble rather than solo, you can also omit the root because some bass instrument will play it for you.

Sometimes you add by removing. Take your index finger off the C on the second string, whcih now gives you an open B and you have your CMaj7

Ciao!
